Yes and no ....

No you can't for exactly the reason you give but ..... I have filed off that extra 'knoppie' on my old X9 RD and used the 'normal' BBB ones no problem ;)

Thanks BB!

I saw the proper X9 ones in a LBS for R350 and decided hell no! For a little more than that I can get a whole new RD. So yeah... seems I need to 'file that knoppie down'.

I was reading this on the Chain Reaction site:

Ben from United Kingdom asks

can i use LX 9spd jockey wheels to relace those on an XT 9spd mech?

CRC Replies:

Yes that is not a problem.

Damian from United Kingdom asks

Are the 9 speed LX jockey wheels ok to fit to my 9 speed deore rear mech?

CRC Replies:

Yes they will be fine. The only specification you need to be sure of is that the jockey wheels are 11 tooth. In theory you could even fit xtr jockey wheels to deore.

So you don't have to use XT wheels on an XT derailer? Makes replacing them a bit cheaper if you look at the prices:

Make sure the tooth count matches.

Use the B tension to set the gap between the cassette and upper derailleur wheel.

My opinion- original is best especially with derailleur wheels as Shimano have a ceramic bearing in the upper wheel for a reason. The ceramic bearing allows play, without this play your chain will ghost shift as the terrain been ridden changes.

Only XT up have ceramic, and it is a bush, not bearing.

I find the KCNC a bit noisy (road and MTB) but they do look the dogs 'whatsits' and work a treat

Dude, if you can hear your KCNC jockey wheels then you are A: Not breathing B: Not going fast enough.

GO KCNC. Every now and then take them off, gently wiggle out the gold bushings, prise off the bearing seal with the end of a sharp blade. Blast clean with Q20, roll and rinse, repack with Motorex yellow, replace the seal - reinstall. Those bearings will last you to beyond the life of the wheels.

Oh, and you get the **bling**
