The Sabrina Love mtb race over 25 km in Plettenberg Bay signals the beginning of a new season for Carlo. It took place on 28 Dec 2010 and again Carlo completed this race (in muddy and wet conditions). Thank you to Magnetic South for the good organisation and well planned event!

Shame. Poor kid - looks like another case of over-competitive, limelight-seeking parents.

did he finish before you nothingness :)

is that a full susser ?

with a bottle cage under the tube ?

yeah its nogal full sus, probably not enough space in the triangle for the cage to be ontop.

Luckily I wasn't there or he might have.

No wonder they've given him a camelbak to use instead - any bottle in that cage must get absolutely covered in mud. Yuck.

oh snap! where did that come from?

Somebody that's seen what happens to laaities that are given everything (where can one even buy a full susser that small?) and pushed too hard by their parents when they're too young. :( Particularly one girl who was at school with me (who's mother was so competitive she sometimes took matters into her own hands) who was always so busy studying or training she never had any time to play with other kids. Now she's gone off the rails and is an embarrassment to her mom.

I hope the kid is genuinely having fun, not just because he's doing what his parents want. And if that is all that this is about, and he's just having fun like all other kids at his age, why the need to show him off? Is that not what this thread is about? The parent showing him off?

Well that's my rant over now. :) This is rant and rave after all.

Yeah i do see loads of kiddies on full mini full sussers these days though, I agree with what you said now, but its still a shaitload better than buying kids 15k worth of playstation games and watching them veg and get nice and obese.

Absolutely! :)

The distances he's doing just seem way too far for someone so young. I thought (which doesn't mean much though) that it was generally accepted that little kids shouldn't do hard events - which is why there are rules on gear restrictions and age limits on certain events. Any way, if I'm completely off the mark, his dad will ignore my comments and rightly so. Persian - you've got a hellavu responsibility here. Good luck!

My two Brats are lazy but can do a 20k if there is some motivation. My girl (12) can give me a go on the hills. Only co'z she weighs like 5kg's. My boy (6) a bit on the lazy side likes to say " a little help here" when ever there is a slight incline. But I'm very proud of my kids and give them what I can.. Including discipline.

normally, i'd be proud of any kid who can pull of consisten attempts at anything, but that list of 2010 races... i dunno, leave me somewhat discomforted. <_< Is he riding with similarly driven kids, or adults? I bet it's the latter.

but if he's the physical equivalent of an intellectual genius, then it's a special case requiring not only the love and support of his parents, but also the services of a true professional to ensure he is not being harmed in any way, both physically and emotionally.

In race conditions i agree with you, but then again, back in my day, i cycled to primary school on my BMX that was 17km away there and back summer and winter and oddly did not find it challenging at all, single speed with a 15kg backback and no waterbottle.

granted MTB events are harder with more pressure.

Don't be so rude man! Even though the young guy is doing too much the parents have taken it in a serious light in order to get advice on whether it is good or bad. To the point where they have requested me to put them in toch with an Olympic level coach. I think this alone means the parents are concerned about their boys health and future and I suspect if you list all the races he does this year you will not see him do more than flat 25km races of over 90min or so.

You should read the thread Big H suggested. You will see it is a different story to what you assumed.
