Most definitely Lance Armstrong! Check out the clips of his 2001 Tour de France ascent of Alpe D'Huez on youtube, inspirational stuff!

International:

I really liked Pantani. I loved the way he climbed.

And definately Lance. People can say what they want, but he was something special.

Local riders:

The Beneke Brothers and Mr Cyclelab, Andrew Mclean.

C'mon dudes...

The one. The only. The best MTB rider of all time:

Johnny T!

We'll never again see someone who could win both DH and XC World Championship titles. Anyone who's seen him get big air in a *cross country* race would agree: Tomac is the smoothest, most stylish rider ever. Plus he's a nice guy.

Jens Voigt.... watching him sit on the front in the TDF a few years back in a valley floor. he must have pulled for 30km's betwwen 2 cat 1 climbs... al to get CSC team mate, Sastre,, back in the mix. he sigle handedly shredded the field. Also this year when he paced that one climb, again shredding the field, for andy.. when he pulled off the front, he looked like he was going to unclip.

dipite Vino's history, that man has heart and guts!

For bringing rock star cool to cycling: The Lion King

For being madder than a box of frogs: The Badger (Hinault). "While I breathe, I attack."

For being the consummate team worker: Jens Voigt (I think he may have been mentioned.

For being insatiable: The Cannibal, Eddy Merckx.

For being an indomitable Gaul: Eugene Christophe (whose name lives on on many a toe strap). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eug%C3%A8ne_Christophe

And along with Eugene Christophe, all those madmen who tackled the Grand Tours when the roads over the Alps and Pyrennees were little more than goat tracks. The bikes they road were single speed because there was no choice, not because SS was the new black. The unnamed ones are more inspirational to me than the greats because it must be so much harder to grind out a finish in extremis than to claim the palmares.

(Cool thread, Mr Bender.)

Some of the the big one’s Coppi, Hinault, Le Mond, Indurain, Armstrong and countless others are a given..., but locally, ask the guys (some mentioned here above) like the Benekes, Mc Intosh, Andrew Mc Lean etc. what a guy by the name of Grant Lottering did with them in some (especially hilly) races whilst still a JUNIOR . . .!!

I raced against him and he was supposed to be a peer, but he was certainly a hero of mine and very inspirational in the late 80’s.

Fab Fabian!

But I relate to Pantani most, cos like him I am called "The Elephant". But I don't have big ears, so... you do the math.

Ok, it's because I'm fat! :)

Haha. Look, Sam's not bad, but you have to admit one can't really compare... Johnny T is Johnny T, he's a living legend. I want to see Sam Hill rip an XC field to pieces while manualling through rollers and then win a DH race the next day ;)

Fabian Cancellara is a phenomenal talent. Previous generation favourite is Sean Kelly. Old school favourites are Jacques Anquetil and Fausto Coppi.

This thread is reminding me to get some old cycle races on dvd.
