well, reply with 9mm of my own.

got luck to them!!!

the problem here lies in that criminals are able to commit crime without consequence (and i am not talking about the justice system, dont want to even open up that can of worms). we as citizens do not take a stand. we dont make the time to equip ourselves with the knowledge to protect ourselves and those around us. each time we allow these criminals (hijacker or the white collar criminal) to continue, they thrive on that they can get away with it. right here on our hub, chris is looking for "Preston Luke Scott" who by the sounds of it has stolen chris's money. But if we allow this to continue, someone else or maybe you and i will fall trap to this.

i understand that the consequences in a hijacking situation is life threatening (i suppose if Chris find Preston, then its life threatening for Preston   ), but we need to create a sense of unity and strength against criminals.

my point is broader than the hijacking incident.

I choose not to carry a firearm, so pointing my finger at him won't accomplish much.

My point was specific to the responses to the car hijacking incident mentioned.

I'm pretty sure we see eye to eye on the broader issue.

Ag tog...do nothing then...sit in your car and be scared...don't call the police from your cell....just sit there....maybe take some pictures with your phone.

90% of them do not carry guns...and obviously they would have showed the cyclist the gun mmaking it easier to take the bike rather than have a physical scuffle.

Why dont you try it ONE day...I did and the dude just started to appologise...

I never said I would do nothing. As stated above, my comments were specifically aimed at the idea of confronting an armed hijacker. Read it carefully.

If an unarmed or lightly armed thug tries to take my stuff, you can bet your ass he'll have to fight me for it, but I'm not going to try convince a guy with a 9mm to put it down and have a scuffle in stead. That can only end one way.

I agree, if suddely 50 people jump out of their cars surely the high jacker will run....

If the hi-jacker thought there was the slightest chance of that, there would be no hi-jacking.

For evil to prosper just takes good men to do nothing.

Thats how we are..........

OK got a reply from her...happened on the bridge opposite The Paddocks heading towards Sunset Beach

Sounds like the cyclist managed to get away but was nearly pushed into traffic on the bridge.

I hope he/she is OK. Really sad to see/hear of things like this!! :(

I use that route for training rides A LOT! B@st@rds.

Chances are of you run the hijacker over with your car you will be liable for his hospital bill and pay compensation for his trauma for the rest of his life...

You are sadly a little correct - but it goes to prove - KILL DA VARKER DEAD - no problems, no compensation, no trauma. Well, I wouldn't have any. But reverse, go forwards, reverse, go forwards - a few times, just to be sure.

I ride through a pretty dodgy part of Cape Town i.e lower main road and I constantly think about this, not sure what I will do in this scenario, do any of you ride with some sort of protection/weapon?

Probably best to just give the bike off, but I guess you can way up the scenario.

Yesterday with the Gale winds there were a couple of times when you going so slow you an easy target.

I got jumped at Giempie Street a year or two back because of the wind. I was going walking pace, thought he might be waiting for a taxi, and then found myself lying on the ground, trying to hold onto the bike. He got away, but a passing car took me to Woodstock police station. The cops knew exactly where to go and we got the bike back.

Strangely, I think Lower Main is safer in winter when it's dark earlier. If it's dusk, I carry my mace in my hand from town to Roodebloem Road or the circle. But I feel safer riding De Waal Drive, then coming down Roodebloem to rejoin Main Road.

And ja, I've done the Paarden Island stretch of the new cycle lane, and it feels ready for an ambush to happen. Maybe it'll be better when the buses are running.

Still waiting for some crim to try his luck - one promise - me or him ? - it's him. Oh, and it is not murder - it is self defence - not my fault the car kept changing direction (lol). I always carry a blade when I commute or go into any trail. And I assure you, I won't hesitate to use it - no conscisence whatsoever. Like the dude that got jumped in Cedara just before X-mas. Two perps - one klapped him on the head with a log - the other stabbed him in the chest with a broken bottle. Then they came at him with a knife - he disarmed one and stuck the knife in his back right up to the hilt. My hero - they found the perp a few ours later - sadly, not dead. THAT's the only language they understand. When I cycled in Natal many years ago, I regularly cycled thru Umgababa - became real dodgy - so I carried my 9mm. Perps seemed to sense something and I never had shaite.

I take it if/when you get jumped, you won't expect anyone to come to your aid ?

Titusti also nearly got taken out at Giempie street. when he told the cops they said "What were you doing there? We don't even go there"

As for the Paardeneiland route, I suspect there'll be surveillance cameras there. Not sure how much that will help though
