EigerSA Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 My brand new Christmas present shocks only take disc brakes and I've only ever had v-brakes. I can't help but think that hydraulic sounds like a bit of a pain since the brakes have to be bled and now I got to keep the right fluid. Or is it a case of mechanical brakes are the past and hydraulic is in? Please help, I got to order soon
Mojoman Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 Hydraulic is not as bad as you may think. After 4000km odd on my bike with cheap Tektro brakes I have had no issue with them other than a bushing in the lever wearing (which was fixed). The ones I have use mineral oil and I see in bike shops a small bottle is quite pricey but CWC has a bottle for a little over R100. I will do the fluid in my brakes this year (I do my car fluids every two years) and see how it goes...
dirtrider Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 If u think it is a pain to bleed HD brakes and the maintenance sound like to much then I suggest you try and swop it all for that stuff their used to stop ox-wagons with . Serious I fail to see the issues you refering to .

Serious I fail to see the issues you refering to . I've never used discs brakes before, much less serviced them, and there have been a number of threads where guys seem to battle a little bit. When guys talk about bleeding their brakes I immediately get flashbacks of when I used to do that on my first car as a poor student! I was also asking about which is better, mechanical or hydraulic, those that have may be able to point me in the right direction. But hey, thanks very much for your constructive comments, really appreciated you taking the time out to help.
Johan Bornman Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 Mechanical disc brakes is like the worst of both worlds. Hydraulic brake lines are the cat's whiskers and nice V-brakes are quiet, light, long-lasting and very good. Now you want to get brake cables (bad news in terms of maintenance) and discs (bad news in terms of noise, rubbing, pad longevity and weight). Get hydraulic discs or hydraulic Vs. The occasional bleeding is nothing compared to the continuous cable servicing.
