PUT ALL COMPONENTS ON FIRST (allow room for bar ends) and check that you don't get your brake/shifter clamps jambing out on the taper.

Cut with a really fine tooth hacksaw - slooowly. Pref use a guide ring.

Its easy to do. I cut mine. Took 1cm off either side and put bar ends on. Not sure about suggested width for a 26er but for my 29er i was informed to leave them slightly wider. Suppose it depends whats comfortable for u

For starters riser bars are for trail and downhill racing and are suppose to be wide. Fit flat bars for cross country. Secondly you don't fit bar ends to riser bars for the same reason as pointed out in point 1.

How much wider than shoulder width for trail mampara. The Ergo2 bar ends is a welcome relief for the hands.

You will never ever find a MTB with bars the width of the rider's shoulders. 400-440mm is extremely narrow and all the controls will not even fit on the bars. For trail riding the most common is over 700mm.

Mampara you need to pull the hat out of your eyes.

There is no torqueing reason why you cannot:

1. Have a riser bar on a xc or marathon bike - Both events can have steep downhills in them.

2. XC / marathon riders are also entitled to the benefits of riser bars.

3. Same applies to riser bars with bar ends – See item 2

You don't use riser bars because you go downhill. You use it because they have more sweep, stronger and lift the front up a bit.

I don't see what the benefit there is to XC or marathon riders with or without bar-ends.

Why do you need more sweep, strength and lift on the front?

Control. Have you ever seen Seasons or any of those movies where men ride real mountains and not the molehills we have in SA.

XC / Marathon riders also need control.

I've seen plenty of crazy downhill sections on XC courses in SA

The average joe does not ride crazy stuff but will still benefit from using a slightly wider riser bar on the terrain that he normaly rides and is technicaly difficult for him / her.

Bar ends provide comfort, variety and support which is usefull on long climbs or distances, and there is no valid reason on earth why they cannot be put on riser bars, unless you are affected by what the fashion police say.

XC flatbars are a weightweenie (no not the one on the hub) invention to help save weight and achieve better aerodynamics for racing purposes.
