Hey Guys

I am planning on going to Groenkloof this week but there has been a lot of rain(and more to come) which means a lot of mud,but I have never rode in mud since getting SPD peddles.

Do they clog up and what not? Should I rather use normal pedals or will I be fine?

Sorry if this is a stupid Q but I had to know if I am going to battle.

You'll be fine with cleats, cycled there on friday. It's wet but all perfectly rideable ;) If you struggle to clip in/out just clean your cleats by rubbing on the grass or something. On the other hand, if your feet don't touch the ground, they can't get dirty!

You don't say what SPDs ?

Generally though a dose of MrMin on the pedals works wonders and helps to stop clogging. If you dab or walk in mud, then before clipping in, just tap your feet with the cleats tapping the pedal. This sheds some mud and in turn also helps to keep the pedals from clogging up.

Hi Edwin,

You'll find that SPDs do clog up a bit in mud. There will be a bunch of people telling you that you should switch to eggbeaters because they're better in mud, but it's really not all that bad. Use this little trick: If you happen to step in mud and need to clip in again, knock your foot sideways against the pedal a couple of times. If you hit it with the hard part of the shoe (usually part of the side is hard because of the plastic/carbon nature of the sole), you'll find that it creates enough vibration to knock most of the mud off. The rest shouldn't cause too many problems.

If you're not totally comfortable with that yet, take some flat pedals with to use. Hope that helps!

Thanks, unfortunately I am going there with some mates that are not into cycling (yet :P ) so I am expecting to have to wait at the end of all the single tracks.

They are Shimano PD-M515 peddles, does it make a big difference?

Heh... cool, well stick with the aforementioned and you should be more than ok.

Naw, those pedals should be more than fine. Most folk ride with Shimano and they are more than upto the job. Enjoy it
