Most of you will know that I'm a huge Shimano fan but of late I've changed my tune. The XT and XTR wheels and hubs are just too fragile for serious MTB use. By fragile, I mean the hub doesn't handle water well enough. The left side cones from FH-M775 and the XTR equivalent fail frequently from water intrusion. Then, a new axle set is your only option sinc the cones cannot be purchased separatedly. R400 later, your wheel is service.

I used to have this cost issue with catridge bearing wheels but now that bearing prices have plummeted (yes, plummeted, they cost less than 1/2 of what they cost two years ago), cartridge bearings are consumables. Ride through water, replace them, who cares?

I also used to like Shimano freewheel bodies. The XT class ones used to last forever. They were well sealed and when they eventually gave in after a few years, you simply forked out a R100 or R200 buckes and replaced them. Something went wrong and now they seem to fail more often, especially on the XT wheels. Maybe I'm just the festering end of statistics, maybe not.

Trends have also changed quite a bit. A couple of years ago one could not sell a handbuilt wheel. Factory wheels were all the rage. Now, with an increasing choice in rims and hubs, customers are mixing and matching to their heart's delight. Green hubs, silver spokes, red nipples, blue rims...whatever your fancy.

My flavour of the weeek is Hope. I'm not fond of Chris King - too noisy and too expensive for what you get. CK is no better than the other high-end hubs.

The market's flavour of the week is NoTubes rims. They sell themselves. They may or may not be any good, we'll see in a year or so.

Customers are starting to realise that hubs should be easily serviceable using standard, not proprietary parts. Spokes should be standard, found at any bike shop in any dorp. They should be cheap, not R90 each like with XT. Rims must be pretty, screw robustness, they seem to say.

What is a "meltdown"???? Hope it did not melt your frame or fork as well???

If I think what you mean I smell lack of maintenance here!!!!!!

I am on my 3rd freehub body on cheap 475 hubs (done near on 5000km now).

The part is R200 odd.

Mojoman, where did you buy your Shimano FH-M475 freehub body for R200? I need to replace mine and here in P.E. going rate for the freehub body only is R350 - R550!!! (And then they don't even keep stock!)

Hendrik, Shimano freehub bodies are maintenance free, or whatever the term is. Basically, the user cannot maintain them. I know there are all sorts of McGyver methods to get oil in there but in my experience, if you can get oil in there, water can get in and the little bearings (2 rows of 64 little balls, IIRC) and tiny springs are all rusted.

What do you mean by FH maintenance?

I got them from West Rand Cycles, I went to three shops before I had to go back to WRC. Its not my favourite shop but beggars can't be choosers! And to gove them credit they were the only shop to keep stock.

WRC +27 11 955 4342

To be honest, if you are willing to spend some more pennies maybe just get another hub, these 475's don't have any seals to speak of for the bearings.

Johan in his post he mentioned the following//// and I quote .... "XT hub/freehub", I was referring to the Hub part. they can be serviced.

The little FH maintenance I have done was and emergency repair on my el rapido road tandem FH with Chosen Hubs. I washed the FH until no more dirt came out, left it in the sun for two days to get moisture out and relubricated it with white moly grease in a spray can. I forced the grease in through the same piepie as you find on spookpis cans. The hub worked again and is still working. After rainy periods I did the same and it works. I was able to get two "not working" Chosen freehubs and repaired them in the same way. They are now spares as you cannot find these freehubs anymore. I have since purchased a wheelset with 40 spoke Shimano XT Tandem hubs for the Tandem.

@Big H

it was exactly after a hub maintenence session!! On the hub self...i was trying to get FH off to try and get some lube dripped into it...not very succesful in the end!

I might have caused the "meltdown" inadvertently...by forking around where I shouldn't have...perhaps...BUT I'm all the wiser now!!

Incidently, the FH is still OK it seems...it was the part where the FH fits onto the hub & axle(a star shaped poofter Alu fitting, with thread on the inner side.) This apparently came loose over time? and stripped all the thread on that Alu mac_gafter, leaving a nice grey paste for me to clean up!! No thread left whatsoever...I started noticing a problem when freewheeling and experiencing chainsuck...

Anyways, it's repalced now - so, how do i keep it in tip top shape??

Are you saying that the SLX free hub fit the Shimano XT?

No. I am just showing a ball park figure. Bennie Dikwiel mentioned a M475 freehub that costs R350-R550.

The SLX freehub body I am talking about is FH-M629.
