I just had a really long chat with there warranty guy - as an aside - it does a customer SO MUCH good to just talk to the person. We aren't going to kill you or shout at you, we just want to talk about it.

He says they can have the head tube resprayed for me, to include a vinyl decal, as opposed to a digital decal, and then clear coat it.

This still leaves me with my current frame and they'll do it at their cost, but they won't cover it if I'm not happy.

The suspension linkages I reckon will just have to wait.

I cannot believe I'm about to say this but I might have to just forget it, and rip the clear coat off and have a GIA T frame.

Thats where I guess it'll end.

The silver main triangle actually looks nice with the blue rear.

Have you got me the R3000 for the silver front traingle. I'm not about to go all franken-bike here and start mixing an matching odd stuff.

Im a bit confused

First they said they would change it for nothing and have it replaced under warrenty, now they are saying pay R3000 for a replacement, and they can respray it at their cost?

How can they just change thier minds, doesnt seem right.

Here are some extra photos of the frame in question.

The damage was not caused by faulty paint quality but rather the addition of an adhesive tape and after a prolonged time, the attemped removal of the tape, which seems to have been baked on by the weather.

Hi

As discussed the damage to the frame was caused by external factors and we cannot process a warranty claim on the evidence provided.

Please advise your client on the options I suggested and let me know if I can be of assistance in any other way.

Regards,

Subject: 2010 Giant Anthem X2 - paint coming off (pictures)

Hi

I trust you are recovering well!

As discussed over the telephone, I have taken a few pictures of where the paint has been coming off the frame on the 2010 Giant Anthem X2 I bought from you at the end of August 2010.

I have used a product called "Sellotape All Weather Tape". I used it to protect the frame and paint job, and was told of this product by a lady friend of mine who races mountain bikes professionally and has never had any trouble with it on her carbon Schwinn. I have attached a picture of the product. When rolled out it leaves a very slight green hue as compared to the white on the frame.

I used this tape to protect my frame during the very muddy Sabie Experience a few weeks ago (16-19 December 2010) and it worked well!

The head tube, top tube, down tube and chain stays were covered. I took most of it off when I got back, without any trouble. I left the pieces which were covering the head tube on. I decided to take this off when I was on holiday and as I pulled it off I heard what sounded like a tearing sound. I noticed that the GIANT decal on the right hand side had started to come off on the N. I immediately the section which was no longer on the bike back onto the frame. You see I could line it up 100%.

A few days later I also noticed that the paint between the front derailleur and the frame on the seat tube was also flaking off. There was never any protective tape in this area. Most of the paint which has come off is covered by the front derailleur, but you can just see it on the photos.

I'm unsure what Giant would say about something like this. While the frame is still fully functional ( and is a really sweet bike) its not something I expected when I bought the bike. Normal wear and tear, such as cable chafing etc is expected, hence the use of the protective tape. You guys still installed the white cables for me post Sabie, but it also seems as if the previous ones also dug in to the rear suspension linkages quite nastily. I've had 8 Giants in my life time, and there have been 15 in our family over the passed 21 years. This is the first time something of the sort happens. It is a pity because other then this the bike is EXCEPTIONAL! I'm a HUGE Giant fan and just managed to get my hands on a mid 90's Giant Boulder. I'm planning on restoring and doing the Argus with it this year :-)

Would you mind sending this on to Dragons/Giant? Please also BCC me in the emails, it'd be nice to see what they say.

Thanks man.

I'm NERVOUS for Attakwas!

Can you not just redo the sticker/ decal & just get the frame recoated with the clear coat, is that possible, it just seems to be the decal thats the problem.

I guess this is now sorted then as it's due to the tape and not the paint quality.

Ghostface, how do you guys handle warranty claims when old tubes have been used as chain guards?

Suggest that to Giant/Ghostface.

bull****!!

No tape is ever gonna take off paint or clearcoat from ANY proper paint job. No matter how you bake or do what else to it!!!

I've seen a Scott Scale 30 do the same... clearcoat started flaking on rear triangle and Scott replaced it under warranty...

Something went wrong when this frame was painted at the factory...

Baked on? After 3 weeks? and the wettest weather our country has seen in years?

They never answered why the paint was flaking off where there was no tape, something doesn' t seem right here.

I completely forgot about that.

I'm not sure what Giant will say.

Find out what the story is with that? They are passing the buck here, its not good enough. Let them test there "theory" that its down to the tape. So by sticking cable rub stickers on my frame going to void my warrenty? Even take the frame to a good panel beaters or spray painters, get another opinion

Good thing I'm on the ball. I need a job with Tumbleweeds consumer watchdog.

Hi Ghostface

Can you please take a photo of where the Giant decal is coming off in the area where the FD is? I'd also just like a comparison, since there was never any tape in that area, what being covered by the FD and all.

That does make me think that there is some ground for a warranty, especially since this area never had any tape on the frame.

Thanks man!
