Melting grease for chain lube - anyone tried it?

Hi All.

I don't want to start another "my lube is better than your lube debate" but would it be possible to melt grease then dunk your chain in the melted grease to lube your chain. In theory all the thin grease should get into all the rollers. Once dry, wipe off excess and ride?

I would imagine new chains are lubed in a similar method.

Has anyone ever tried this method?

Ran a thin bit of Lightening's clear grease on the chain of my indoor trainer bike and wiped off all the excess ... done about 600km on it and it's still smooth and shifts like magic.

Not sure if it would work well outdoors though, as I'd imagine it would pick up all kinds of grit and dust. Could turn into a nasty paste that way...

My 2c anyway...

Well, some lubes have waxes included, which tend to flake off and have a reasonable 'cleaning' effect.

I'm pretty sure that the grease has no such chance, it's going to pick up dust and grit.

Still, there are some wet lubes that I've found horrible - they turn to a sludge paste that's nasty and difficult to clean...so you might have a point.

Be great to know from someone who can confirm what exactly new chains are dipped into..

Your lube has to go a long way....... A typical 57 link chain used on the average multispeed bike has 570 parts, more than the whole rest of the bicycle put together. There are 114 outer plates, 114 inner plates, 114 rollers, 114 rivets, and 114 bushings.

Measuring indoors is irrelevant. I get 1000+km in dry condition on my road bike using Squirt.

I would LOVE to find what new chains are dipped into. It seems (IMHO) to be the best lube.

It's not lube but just packaging grease. You should remove it before you fit the chain.

That's exactly my point the packing grease works well as a lube. Now to try replicate that method.

Why do you say it works well? I think its primary goal is to stop rust while sitting on the shelf.
