For weight control do some 1 hour + rides with your HR kept below 60% for the first 10 minutes and > 65% for the remainder. Only drink water. Since it´s not very strenuous add it to your rest or semi-rest days. Beware of losing weight too quickly and do not attempt to loose weight the last week.

Quit the beer/wine and if possible the smoking.

Do mostly tempo training during your endurance rides (hills are your friend). Eat/use energy supplements during these rides. Prevent from binge eating when finished.

Cycle mostly on-road during the week doing multiple hills. Consistent slow riding is the name of the game.

Do back-to-back rides on week-end using mtb + long hours and distance + some hills (then take in the view of the vineyards producing the culprit getting you to this position)

One positive: at least your training will be over quickly!

Good luck

Thanks vanniri, That was quite humorous. I have to admit this has grown into more than just a silly bet with another buddy. I now have the will to actually do it. I think it has became a personal challenge. Have not had a ciggy since Sunday(lungs are loving it but the mind's complaining)

I was wondering about the amount of dirt training compared to road training. So thank you for the advice.

Since this would be my first event as well I have entered myself for the event at bridgehouse in franshoek this weekend and the 99er in Durbanville next weekend. Should give me a fair idea about timing chips licensing etc. etc.

Eugee you can do it! Stage racing is all about making the mental shift to keep pushing the pedals over when the body is complaining to stop. In all your training try to find a decent rhythym in your riding where you are trying to be relaxed on the bike with every effort being effecient in maintaining the average speed you will need to get through the cutoffs for the day. Loosen the grip on the bars slightly, check that your shoulders are loose and relaxed and concentrate on your pedal stroke. Crazy how the time and the kays fly by when you're in this frame of mind. With the amount of training you'll get ahead of the event, the deciding factor will be your mental toughness. Again, as you've mentioned the belief is coming, you can do it!!!!!!!

So for the last 3 weeks it s been training, training and more training, like you guys advised me 6 days a week with a rest day. (well i had two rest days this week as i could feel the body begging for it.) I feel slightly less apprehension towards that first weekend in march which is only two weeks away now.

The thing is Now i'm hoping you guys can help me on some of the more technical stuff.

What should i include in my riding kit?

What should I have waiting at the end of each stage?

What running repairs should I be Able to do?

I all ready booked the wash & service, will this be all I need?
