You will not notice the difference between 9 and 10 speed chainrings.

You will however notice the difference with 8 speed chainrings.

Reason for my question was, Friend of mine has a 9 speed setup on his bike and wanted to put on a compact crank, so the LBS said to him the compact is only 10 speed and he can't put it on his bike, or he has to change everything to 10 speed, so he only bought a casset with bigger sprockets

LBS is talking k@k and saw an easy way to make some more money.

 

Theoretically, the 9 speed chain and chainrings is wider than 10 speed (although I very much doubt this about the chain rings themselves).

So why will a wider chain not fit on the narrower 10 speed chainrings?

My point exactly! but they apparently phoned shimano, so I stripped my moer and walked out the shop!!

NOPE! I am willing to bet R1 000 000 bucks that this chainring will work with 9, 10 and 11 speed chains!

I'm thinking the LBS and Shimano are looking to make a quick buck. They'll probably also tell you that you'll void your warranty by using a ten speed crank on a 9 speed drivetrain.

I used to run a compact crank on my 9-speed groupset I sold, was a Sora hollowtech crank i think, worked perfect

Used to use my current compact when I had 9 speed, now I have 10.

 

It is even easier if you think about it this way.

 

Because 10 speed chain is slightly thinner than a 9 speed chain, if anything a "10 speed chain ring" would be slightly thinner than a 9 speed chain ring. So the 9 speed chain would definitely fit on there.

But do you really think a company is going to spend all the extra money and time making 9,10,11 speed chain rings? hell no, one machine to stamp them all out and save cost.

 

I know that a 9 speed chain will work on a 8 and 7 speed drivechain. So in that case I would even go as far as saying that a "10 speed compact crank" could work on a older 8 speed setup as well.

As long as the physical distance between the pins on a chain is the same it will work up at the front.

 

Hey, why dont you go tell the LBS that I used to use a 10 speed FD and 10 speed RD on my 9 speed shifters and watch how he has a heart attack

I agree some LBS just want to make a quick buck.......... I use a LBS where they ALL ride........ even the workshop people ride....... so at least they know what you talking about and can relate to the situation......... also get good advise from them knowing that there advsie will cost them a sale .......... they still give it.........
