Hi there

I bought a new road bike at the end of 2010. Early in January I did about a 100-100-120km and the gears started slipping. I took it in to the bike shop to have it serviced, as I understand you usually have a first service quite soon after buying a new bike. After another 150km, the gears started slipping again and the chain has come off twice in one ride. After the ride, I adjusted the gearing on the barrel adjuster. This helped a bit in the next ride but the gears are still slipping and the chain came off again (On the inside).

Have you guys got any recommendations? Is this normal, cause I can't fork out R250+ everytime to have the gears adjusted after 100-150km

Thanks

The barrel adjuster is more for your changes - like when the chain doesn't want to hop up to the next sprocket, or jumps down 2 sprockets instead of one. To limit derailleur movement, you need to adjust the two screws (often marked H and L).

That first service in about 4 weeks should be free. The chain slipping off on the inside (and outside) both front and rear is an easy fix.

The skipping of gears you need to play with the barrel adjusters. Just make sure that every click on the levers represents the correct gear at the back. You must not shift once and the chain jumps two places.
