I am considering converting my 9 speed Sram XO to 10 speed XO to better make use of a 36 tooth cassette which will suite my 29er. The problem is that I am riding a shimano XTR 960 9 speed crankset with fairly new blades. Will it be necessary to change either the blades (if possible) or the whole crankset which will be rather expensive to facilitate the change to 10 speed. Thanks in advance for your comments.

your chainrings are the same size, so you will be fine there.

Just a new chain and cassette + shifters.

Are you staying on the same layout in front 2 or 3 chainrings as before?

The only problem you might have is on the down shift......

The gap between the chainrings ( on the spider of the cranks ), they are only a few mm wider, so the chain might not settle on the chainring properly. I might sit between the two rings, because the chain is thinner. There is a way to get around it. The machanic, if he is any good will have to adjust the front mech precisely....

Correct, I have this on a road bike with a 9 speed crank and everything else is 10 speed  - I have tried everything but clearly I am not 'precise' enough :(

If you are running Campagnolo all you need to do is replace the Big chainring as the spider has been slightly shaved out to make it compatible. If Shimano, well not sure as I am a Campy fan..........

Read on the internet (Sheldon Brown I think)that you just have to change the inner rings as the offset on the Shimano 10speed is more to the right which closes the gap slightly. FSA seem to be a bigger problem with this change from 9 to 10 speed.

No it is not, I have a 9 speed FSA crank on my training bike. Using a 10 speed groupset - no issues ever.

The difference between the 9 and 10 speed chain is so minimal, you wont ever notice it.

Hey Guys,

I've currently got an XT 9 speed drivetrain with a Noir crankset (also 9 speed) and I'm in the market of a new rear derailleur, cassette, chain and shifters.

I could get the 9 speed replacement parts, but for a bit extra I could move up to the new Dynasys 10-speed parts. I don't want to replace anything on the front if not necessary to try keep costs down.

From what I've read, this should work ok (barring some potential downshifting problems on the front), but:

a) Has anyone got any personal experiences that can confirm this?

B) Will a 10-speed front shifter work with a 9 speed front derailleur?

c) Do you get 10-speed chainrings for non-Shimano cranks (I can't find any online)?

Thanks!

Cheers,

Paulo
