Ok Guys,

I have made the transition from HT to Dual Suspension.

Currently building up a Silverback Mercury 1 size M.

So the question is, how long should the chain be on a dual suspension.

Quite easy to check on a HT, but with no experience on dual suspensions and the way the pivots and links move I am unsure as to what length the chain should be.

Any Advice?

Thanks

You should measure the chain when the distance between the BB and cassette is the largest. So if you compress the back end and the chain shrinks, then you should measure it while it is compressed. You don't want your derailleur to get stuffed because you have a too short chain when you go over bumps.

Thanks for the help. This sure makes a lot of sense.

This ? was asked a few days back.

In short> (using a chain quicklink)

Remove your chain from the drivetrain.

Place it around the large chainring (front) and the large chainwheel (rear) add a full link (one outer plate set, and one inner) to that length.

Thread it back through your derailleur and ride away.

Enjoy

Another way is to just use the measurement of your old chain.

but changing from a HT to FS can be a problem. Sometimes the wheelbase is longer on a FS to make up for the suspension movement. Not a big thing as long as the derailleur is not pulled into oblivion when the suspension is active.
