It is really sad & I hope & pray that he/she recovers from this traumatic experience.

I have come to realise that education and signage will not be enough to stop the carnage. We as cyclists will have to make ourselves highly visible whilst out riding on our roads. I have contacted distributors of tail lights and safety vests & belts and will be selling these at the Sign-Up booth at the 94.7 expo. We need to stop worrying what our friends think we look like with our red flashing lights & orange & lime green safety vests or belts. I am almost certain that the cyclists that have lost their lives to date, if they  have had flashing red lights on their bikes and wearing high visibilty clothing that they would have been around today to support our cause.

RATHER BE AN UNCOOL CYCLISTS THAN A COOL DEAD ONE!!!!!

WE SHOULD BE 'SEEN & NOT HURT'

Please guys, I appeal to you, wear high visibility clothing and get a rear light specifically designed for daytime use such as the Cateye TL-D1000. We have to become more responsible and take our own safety serious!!! and stop thinking that 'It will never happen to me'. Stop thinking of only YOU and start thinking of your family, friends and Loved ones.

May the LORD keep you all safe out there !!!

Hope the cyclist is OK. Aren't all these accidents a sign that CSA should start standing up to Public Safety and demand that serious action be taken against motorists crashing into cyclists?

Saw another cyclist on Ontdekkers Rd around 5:20. Now its not dark anymore but still, if its not 100% light put that light on. Also saw one wearing black kit. Don't know about a light...

We really have to start a campaign "Be Seen & NOT hurt" and get fellow cyclists to wear these vests and put on those lights. Maybe we should make the light thing compulsory like we have with the helmets.

Don't know how we will inforce it, I still see fools riding without helmet's!!

Must be honest most guys in the North/West, (ok around the Randburg area, look like spaceships in the morning), you spot them miles off. We actually comment on each other now when we pass, saying things like "Glad to see another UFO has landed" (corney but it acknowledges the money they guys spent, that he is seen).

Yep, as with everything these days enforcement is a problem. These lights should be used during the day as well.

As mentioned earlier, if we can start behaving like law abiding adults and not worry that the next person is breaking the law then half the battle is won. shaunh2007-11-06 04:24:04

Agree that visibility helps to an extent - but perhaps legalising the use of flashing lights would be the first step, before making them compulsory.  Enforcement is not a problem - failure to use your light voids your insurance (and makes you personally liable for third party damages).

Perhaps some strongly worded letters to the newspaper will help.  My letter to the Tribune on Sunday seems to have helped a bit, but I'm sure it will be business as usual again in a few days.
