its a 2007 Aluminium Morewood Izimu frame

Ive been told not to touch it with a sand blaster - even if not using sand but medium (glass beads), how does one get the paint off then? or do i just sand it?

and then what paint does one use? Auto paint? high quality enamel? What primer? what is a reactive primer?

Ive never done this before so please help

Don't believe everything you are told !

It is powdercoated, short of using a chisel you are going to have to blast.

Got no time now, but do a little search on the hub and you will see a thread that ran not so long ago.

Think it was under Tech Q&A.

You need to mask out all threaded areas, faced areas, and pivot points.

Check it out.

ok i have no clue about the dont sand blast part, cant for the life of me figure why though, i can understand why you wouldn't powder-coat the frame but sandblasting i dont know.

i do know though that you need something for the paint to bond to and pure alu with a slightly rough surface will allow the paint to bond nicely.

i have had success in the past with normal tin spray paint but thats clearly not the best way to do it, depending on what kind of paint job you want and how artistic you are you can airbrush the frame yourself, the best paint in my opinion is automotive 2k and 2k clear-coat once complete, only thing to remember above all else is that your paint job is only going to be as good as your prep so clean clean clean and use latex gloves, paint doesnt like the oil on your fingers at all.

It will possibly peal or blister if you tough the frame with bare hands prior to painting, best thing to use is a high alcohol ether type solvent at first then a good wash and clean with sunlight, dry with lint free cloth and allow to sun dry for about 15 min in a "clean" environment before painting to make 100% sure the frame is dry.

for 2k allow about an hour between the first 3 coats then 24 to the next, and 24-36 after that for the clear to ensure the paint sets properly.

not sure if that a help but thats my experience with paint, have painted many RC heli canopies and recently my bike frame too so thought i would throw my 2000000000000000000 zim dollars in.

Good morning: I re-sprayed a frame mid 2010 (had it done professionally), the process does involve glass blasting, however, autopaint is not as tough as the powdercoating MTB's or bike's in general come with, so you should really invest some tom in a reputable artist.

So I will suggest you use somebody that understands this issue well! If I had any idea on how to load pics I could show you the job I had done for R1800 and that 1800 bucks make me want to ride my bike NAKED!!

PM me and I will send you some pics!

I recently resprayed my aluminium MTB frame with some good results. For the time and efort involved you may want to consider letting cycle art do it for you as the finish will be better and more consistent. If you wanna do it yourself follow the following points:

Sandblast with baking soda, mask off threaded areas, prime with a good quality metal primer, I used Rustoleum. give it 2 coats. Spray with your chosen colour, 3 light coats. Wait till dry - 48 hours. Enamel paint dries hardest. Clearcoat if you want.

Theres a guy named alex that does custom paint in cape town. Ive seen him in the Epic bike shop so you can probably get hold of him through there. He is brilliant.

i am currently doing this, and getting rid of the old powdercoat is a *#(#@& pain in the a$$, priming, a slight pain, base coat a bigger pain and any extra addons (i am just going for a simple inner colour in the inside half of the front triangle) and it is also a huge pain.

I recently saw this http://www.cyclefactory.co.za/bicycles/, they say that a respray is like 2,500 i dont know if that is neg, because to me that is pretty steep, but let me tell you, that you are letting yourself in for a mission.
