Im 16 and the whole scrotom thing not FUNNY stop mocking me!!!!

Not mocking you JB411 - hang around on the Hub long enough, and you'll take all of this in your stride...

I'll pop up my 2 cents, and no doubt more commentary will be forthcoming from fellow Hubbers, so check back here periodically.

First off - the points about the edges of the scratch are important. Sharp edges can damage the seals, allowing dirt in, and lubricants (more than usual) out... As mentioned earlier, I took some sandpaper to mine, very, very carefully, and I'm still going strong...

With this all being said - the scratch appears to be quite high up on the stanchion... Judging by the dust marks all the way down on the stanchion (as in the pics), it would appear that you're not using all the fork's available travel, so as to have the scratch actually entering the lowers of the fork on a regular occasion, if at all...

Should this be the case, I wouldn't worry about it too much... However, if your riding style/terrain sees it regularly entering past the seals - then the nature of the scratches' edges becomes relevant again... Your decision on whether or not to sand it down - all the while without damaging the surrounding coating on the stanchions, will be guided by the above circumstances...

Hope this helps!

[Oh wait]

On closer inspection - that bike appears to be a DH rig? Which would somewhat negate my initial comments regarding where the scratch is? Is airtime your friend (i.e) do you use all your available travel?

Cool beans - that's the spirit. Always remember, anonymity does strange things to people on the Hub!

Ja - so I presume you're a DH'er then... If it's entering at the seals, I'd look at it closely. Key thing is not to damage the seals - so if there are any burrs/sharp edges, you'll need to make a plan. As I've stressed - take it slow, little by little, so as not to cause more damage trying to repair it... My scratch actually dented the stanchion, so I had no choice. I'll pop up pics below - if yours is simply the coating that's been scratched, and so not really sharp - I'd be very hesitant in taking sandpaper to it...

Also - as mentioned already, keep in mind that the scratch might collect dust etc in its 'cavity' so keep specific note of it after rides, and try and keep it clean - simply use a clean cloth, maybe slightly damp...

Here be what mine looked like:

It actually pains me just looking at it... Happened two weeks after buying a brand new fork... :cursing:

Ouch. Did you manage to replace just the damaged scrotum part?

Nope - did some very light sanding, and simply took off the edges. Been watching it like a hawk since then, as it's holding up... The photo makes it look slighty worse than what it is, but so far, so good... I'm due a full-service in the next few months, so hopefully I will be proven correct...

jeepers RodTi :o how did that happen? I literally cringed looking at that photo showing the scratches+dents on your fork..

I cried. I cursed. I cried some more. And then I drank lots and lots of beer.

I was so seriously stoopid - I stopped up on the mountain somewhere, and propped the bike up alongside a type of rocky embankment, for me to get the camelback off - camera out - and take a few pics... They bike was standing pretty up right, can't remeber now if it was a gust of wind or whatever, but it simply fell over. As in, no rolling or anything - just wham for no reason, like someone had reached out and nudged it perfectly over on to its side...

it made perfect contact with the top of a rather strange rock formation, that only had the tip of it sticking out of the ground (think iceberg)... The shape of the scratch is literally what the pattern was on the part it connected... Reckon if it had been a smooth rock, like all the others were in the immediate vicinty, it would have been fine...

I kindly placated myself by reasoning it was simply Karma, doffing its hat in my general direction... Needless to say, my bike is no longer left standing upright whilst on the trail...

That looks more like a HOLE if you ask me :(

THanks i will keep it as is and if i see oil or something strange ill make a plan.

Totally agree on the whole anonymity thing
