    Closer to 10% to 20%

If this is true it must be hugely dependent on other factors.

I do 1400KM a couple of times a year, sometimes with bikes, sometimes not. I struggle to notice a difference in fuel consumption and I watch it like a hawk. This is with two bikes (including a huge 160mm enduro bike) on a hanging rack.

I will say my stress levels go up with a hanging bike rack! I end up looking at the rack in my rear view mirror every few minutes.

  2. I'm a snake magnet. I think I just spot them and others ride on past...

I love them but also extremely scared of them. Get the shivers riding in tight trails with poor visibility. At least on a bike I feel slightly safer. I could never trail run for this reason.

Some places seems worse than others. Basically every time I ride upper g spot I see a moerse puffy.  Probably why I ride so much more in winter 😄

  3. Does anyone know when 2023 Merida's arrive?

    The conundrum is this:

    • Can't find a nice secondhand HT
    • There aren't a huge amount of options and stock is still an issue. The Commencals are nice but overpriced (complete bikes) IMO.
    • The big trail 400 is available but requires some immediate upgrades and more long term
    • The big trail 600 is nice out of the box I wish I could just get an ETA

Unless I can get an ETA on something better it seems like the best option is to go for the 400 and immediately upgrade the fork to a RS Revelation and brakes to Shimano Deore 4 piston. The total price is about 27k. I'll have to upgrade wheels and drivetrain over time.

Knowing my luck, the very next day something sweet will become available lol.

I have a jackery box, works like a charm. I never ran an IDT off it although I did threaten to test and never got around to it.

It used to run my wifi, big telly, sound system and lamp for around 2 1/2 to 3 hours. I could get longer use out of it by disconnecting the sound system and replace the lamp with a battery light. It could not run a kettle, or coffee pod machine - it simply didnt have the ompfff

I now run an inverter system so the jackery box has been redeployed to the ex's house for some use

Jackery is great because it took about 6 hours to fully recharge if it was totally empty. Or, the same amount of time to recharge from the car. It has great use as a portable system for camping or what ever outdoor activity you need it for.

    No, I'm not selling mine

I think the Ecoflow 600w one can do short bursts of 1200w so it can do a (select) coffee machine or hairdryer. It also charges in an hour or so.

They are often R9999 on special which is a good deal.

  5. Howzit guys.

    Long time.

Has anyone got one of these (or other derivatives to the 400?) and what is the sentiment?

    https://www.merida-bikes.com/en/bike/3049/bigtrail-400

Ideally, I'd like the 500 or 600 but no one has stock. This 400 variant goes for around R20k.

Even more ideal would be a Commencal Meta HT but they are more than double the price and are probably worse spec'd (coil fork, no dropper). The frame can't be worth an extra 20k and the Merida frame actually looks really good technically.

My main concern is the fork (Suntour XCR 34) blowing up on me. Serviceability, etc. I'm quite happy with the Deore drivetrain.

Context: I have a bling 160mm 650b Enduro bike but I am looking for something for longer rides, more general rides with the family, and have always wanted to try an aggressive HT. I will die of boredom on a XC bike as I like to jump/hop/manual whatever I can.

  6. Hey guys.

    Long time.

I just purchased Maxxis WT tyres and I have Flow EX rims (25.5 internal).

I'm reading now they are designed for 35mm but are also fine for 30mm. I've Googled it and most people say it should be fine as the Flow EX rim is not exactly narrow.

I was so busy fussing over tyre choice and compound that I let this slip. The bike shop didn't mention it either.

    Anyone tried this?

  7. But the original PAM-2 still ok ?

I could not do them any harm, on any trails.

    I find them very strong.

They still true, even after 3500km.

yeah they were a lot better than I expected (from what people told me they would be like)

Stong rims that remain true but sidewalls are weak. Got a few dings. Other than that a bit heavy.

Didn't have any issues with the hubs either.
