If you want to "hit singletrack and steep downhill" neither is a good option. They are both big, heavy, flexy bikes AKA a gate.

Hi, I speak from experience here, the XTR 970 uses a custom small ring, the middle and big ring are standard. You can quite easily space the small ring out, you just have to search about for the right sized washers. Ive done it with a blackburn chuck ring (which is a nice strong SS one) for a 2x9 setup (with a bash ring) CRC has a blackburn and an original OEM small ring that will fit, you can use middleburn stuff for the other 2. If anyones ordering from CRC i need a small ring, PM me!
