    I got a USA visa last year, just before I got my NZ passport, weirdly enough. It isn't difficult. Just call the US consulate or visit its website, physically it is in Queen street I think. You'll need to fill in some forms and present yourself at the Consulate and pay them some money, I can't recall how much it was, but it wasn't punitive, and the process itself takes a week or less, IIRC.

    We're off to Brisbane on Tuesday...bit of a pity, I generally like to go to the Bay of Islands over December, not this year.

    Great race the Pioneer, organised by awesome people at Dryland. As Nathrix says, a far more 'community' and 'rider oriented' feel to it than the Epic, so a bit of a different experience.

    Gosh stunning. I don't live there any longer, but by gum, South Africa has some beautiful places. Always liked the Karoo.

    Good point Patches - and WP - apply for the business visa, not the holiday one. Think that is what will get you the 2 year jobbie.

    If you go get an Aussie visa make sure it is a 2 year multi entry, you will use it more than once and you do want to avoid the process where possible...

    Be patient with TT Services. They are TERRIBLE to deal with, have no competition, and treat you like the walking wallet you are. But there is no way around dealing with them.

    It's not the device that's problematic, it is being in a forest where there isn't a clear view of the sky. Get a speed sensor and your troubles are over - get the one that fits on the hub of your wheel, I put it on the back wheel so it annoys the dude behind rather than annoying me. You'll have the same issues with most Garmins (Garmen?). Certainly the case with an 810 and my wife's 1000.

    Must have been a good ad as I even remember the name of the bike, Nishiki NFS Altron. WHo would have thought a ladyboy triathlete was a good way to advertise a bicycle.

    They also have access to methods and products that certain amateurs can only dream of.

    Shoot that looks like fun. Good thing with MTB, I find, is that after about 3 or 4 rides the skillz come back...need a good solid 3 weeks of pain and suffering for the fitness to come back though. Keep at it!

    Poor bastards down in Kaikoura and surrounds, and Wellington, now getting flooded. Pretty harsh.

    Jeez that's a proper stuff up. Relieved that casualties are minimal, although that is scant comfort to the families of the 2 confirmed dead. Stay safe folks.

    If anyone here is interested in holidaying in Whakatane this December (from 20 Dec - 2 Jan) our house will be available to rent. Why would you holiday in Whaka? - nice beaches - several pristine lakes nearby - excellent road and MTB cycling opportunities, with nearest trail starting about 2km from my front door - Rotorua is about 80km away - outstanding local walks/hikes - White Island tours (active marine volcano) - Plenty of charter fishing operators to catch a few, well, fish in the sea - you can mangere off the bridge into the river - you can get a 'Whaka-tastic' T-shirt to show off to your friends. PM me if interested.
