  1. Materials Materials should be selected, installed and maintained for durability, strength, riding predictability, aesthetics and environmental acceptability. Select durable wood that is naturally resistant to moisture, decay, sun, heat, cold and insects. Some examples include redwood, cedar, white oak, cypress, locust and manzanita. There are also several environmentally friendly commercially treated woods that are extremely durable and weather resistant. Don't use wooden pallets, scrap lumber, plywood, soft woods such as pine, or other inappropriate materials that will quickly deteriorate or become unstable. Don't use dead trees, logs or stumps unless they are sufficient size or type of wood to withstand deterioration. Certain types of weather-resistant dead wood can be used if properly prepared by removing bark to prevent decay and following all construction guidelines. Do not use living trees in any way. Rough-sawn or hand-prepared wood will blend into primitive locations better than commercial lumber from http://www.imba.com/resources/trail_building/wood_guidelines.html
  2. I know IMBA warns against using packing crates or pallets as a wood source, the wood tends to be cheap and since its untreated will rot and break under some unfortunate cyclist. So rather use treated pine, will last much better under exposure to the elements. Here's a link to how to build a North Shore style bridge http://www.imba.com/resources/trail_building/ladder_bridge.html
  3. Take the time, its a pretty good read. Even though I'm a mountain biker, all this talk of aerodynamics has convinced me I should wash off the 2 kgs of dirt lurking on my bike, it might be giving me drag issues!
  4. I might be keen to join you Mich, only if I'm still functioning after the Monster on Sat. Also will only be able to join if its an afternoon ride, got an engagement brunch (no not my own) on sun morn
  5. You should send your tip into bicycling magazine, you could soon be the proud owner of a new pair of shimano cycling shoes... or get nothing and have your tip read out on supercycling on Tuesday
  6. What is the accepted etiquet when joining a group of mountain bikers? Riding at Northern Fam on sunday I saw a number of groups of young lady riders who I was very eager to join with, but didnt know how to go about it. Any help will be appreciated!
  7. Would love to join you guys, can't miss an opportunity to lay my eyes on the vaunted Commencal
  8. Mich, didnt you just build up a full-sus Scott a little while back. Why the change, or is that a stupid question?
  9. Yep If it were up to me she'd look like this: . . . . and then like this:
  10. I assume since they're co-sponsored by Vredestein they're on Vredestein tyres, does anybody know which model? It'd be interesting to see some stats on the relative performance on each teams tyres over the course of the race, how many punctures, etc. Seems there have been alot of punctures this year

I think you misread the origional post, budget is R15k, not R51k
  13. Ok, ride a Giant XTC3, with Hayes 9 disk brakes. The brakes work well but after every ride, the front wheel doesnt spin freely (as in I spin it and it does about 1 revolution!) I then reset the brake caliper position by loosening the hex bolts and adjusting until the wheel spins freely again. But after the next ride the problem is back! I've tried tightening all the bolts really tight, but this doesnt seem to help. Is the rotor bending on every ride or are the calipers shifting position, regardless of how tight I make the bolts? What should I do, do I need a new rotor, a new set of brakes?

  16. How long are you going to go for MintSauce? Also how far away is Whistler from Vancouver? (I might have an opportunity to get relocated there with my job) WHat's Vancouver like as a place to live? Does it beat Witbank?
  17. hmmm... so lets get this straight. No beer, no kitty (smooth or furry) and very expensive....but still everyone raves about the place... the riding must be FREAKING AWESOME!!!
  18. That's ok, I'm allergic to the things anyways, especially the very hairy ones. I guess thats why I always end up with dogs...
  19. Guy at my LBS put on a pair of Vredestein Trexs for me (coz they didnt have anything else, and I didnt want to have to wait to ride my bike) anybody know anything about these tyres?..... erm and is it tyres or tires? Isnt tires the american spelling?
  20. How heavy are the crossmarks?
  21. Eish, thats not cheap... Of course I could just buy a one-way ticket and cut the costs in half! I'm sure they wouldnt mind if I just camp in the woods and survive off squirells and discarded energy bars for the rest of my natural life
  22. How much will it cost, Saffa?
