  1. I discovered some more single track today. I cycled over the wall of the De Bos Dam in the Hemel & Aarde Valley from Karwyderskraal and took the jeep track south. It turned into a fantastic trip with the path clinging to the mountainside high above the river. Ended up on the farm Volmoed, they appearded to be MTB friendly. There is a possibility of going further on the western side of the valley, will check it out another day.
  2. I did a few trips from Onrus towards Hawston, over Karwyderskraal to Hemel & Aarde. I found a single track from Onrus (at the entrance to the R43 near the 7/11) that takes one past Hawston right to the Fisherhaven exit. No need therefore to ride on the R43 itself, except for about 1 km to the Karwyderskraal turn off. To get to the start, just lift your bike over the armco barrier about 80m from the stop sign and start pedaling towards Hawston. I also did the trail from Fernkloof past Voelklip. Liked the last few k's, fast and free flowing.
  3. Hi udxcob, sounds impressive. Have you ever been up the back of Simonsberg. On that road between Klapmuts and the Paarl- Franschhoek rd, is a farm on the Simonsberg side, with the name "Flentersberg(burg)", you take that road and follow it for about 2,5km then take a right up through the pine forrest, about an hours hard pedal in small gears to get to the top of that "nipple" shaped rock on the north western ridge of Simonsberg. Spectacular views over the peninsula.
  4. BA Check out the following threads: In the second one there is a post from me with some pointers, but the best advice is to pop in at the cycle shop in the main rd in Hermanus, last year Leon gave some great advice. https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/58722-rides-in-hermanus/page__p__891037__hl__hermanus__fromsearch__1#entry891037 https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/67865-mtb-in-hermanus/page__p__999203__hl__hermanus__fromsearch__1#entry999203
  5. I agree that Heimer Anderson did the correct thing with his post, but by that stage many people had read the post where the suggestion is made that they have something to hide and the damage was done. It does not matter whether the OP was vindictive, or merely repeated something he heard, the post was in my view irresponsible. You are obviously entitled to have a different view and that's cool with me, I just think one should be careful what you write about other people, even if it is in the shape of a question.
  6. Slowbee I disagree, AT's integrity was diminished by the OP. One cannot simply publish any rumour you hear on an open forum such as The Hub.
  7. Great news, I found a Peter Allen bike for sale om gumtree! Check it out: http://capetown.gumtree.co.za/c-Stuff-for-Sale-sports-bicycles-fitness-Peter-Allen-racing-bike-W0QQAdIdZ238042800
  8. GD Keep in mind that at 64k's into the DC you would have done the two major climbs, so in that sense 64 km's training should be enough. I wouldn't even consider giving my Peter Alan to a wheelie popping gonzo.
  9. ABCO Below is a piccie of my cooler box, I have a dynamo that runs against the rear wheel, this powers the fan in the cooler. And another matter I never said anything about a road racing bike. You are no doubt aware that on the DC website they said that it is only a race for a few select teams, for the rest of us it is a social event.I don't use my Peter Alan that my dad gave me in st 9, I use the more comfortable Bomber for longer trips.
  10. For the first stop I would suggest the take away at the BP garage at Buffeljagsrivier. By that stage you would have done at least 10km and they make a very nice toasted ham and cheese sarmie, service is a bit slow but it will give you time to catch your breath. At Suurbraak there is a tannie that bakes fresh doughnuts, she stays in that house with the two chimneys on the left as you come into the village. When you get to the T junction at Barrydale where the route takes a left towards Montagu, turn right there and up the hill on your left is another BP garage, they also have nice pies. We used six of their pies to stabilise my one buddy who accidently overdosed on Rennies. Further on in Barrydale are some classy restaurants where you can sit down and order a proper meal. On the way to Montagu you pass at least two farm stalls. In Montagu I can recommend the buffet at the hotel at the springs. Good food man! Ashton is a bit of a culinary backwater, but i remember at least four cafes, I also remember the ladies bar on the right as you exit the town, I am not sure what kind of take aways is on the menu, but my friend Ricardo , says it is hot. Good thing because I don't like cold food. Robertson has a KFC, I also buy wine from La Verne, the sales girl is always friendly. I seem to have a bit of amnesia, cause I cannot remember any shops along the rest of the route. This is the stage where I eat from the cool bag that I usualy strap to my carrier, eggs, sausage, cold chicken and Oros. With a bit of planning you will have more than enough to eat along the route.
  11. I will ask my sister all those questions when she comes back from the creche, my mom took her there to practise for the christmas concert. She is one of the angels, she looks so cute with her concert clothes.
  12. Graveldonkey I spoke to my team Captain, he is very very nice man. He said you can join us in training this weekend. On friday we will be watching a funny video at his house. Saturday we will be watching the Bokke v Wales and then we will have our annual potjiekos competition. On Sunday after church we will be playing putt putt there by Sea Point, I was second last year and practised in the passage every night this week. My mother does not like it when we play in the house but my sister told her that it is only once a year and that she souldn't make such a racket. Please tell me you will be able to join us. Your friend Mr Legs
  13. Four passes = 184km + wind + rain + a bit of sunshine. Went to a wedding afterwards and for some reason struggled on the dance floor to perform the Funky Chicken at my usual high standard.
  14. We will also be on the route, starting from Durbanville at 05H00. Distance should be close to 200k's, wonder if I will make it....
  15. I drove up Ventoux with a rental car in 2007, had a few piccies taken at Simpsons monument, camera stolen a few days later. Also visited Fontaine de Vacluse(sp?). Next year it will be Italy, any famous Giro hills to visit?
  16. The slower group does 25km/h + ave riding speed, with a few stops to wait for back markers. One night I landed in the fast group by accident. On the way out between the Boland / Lubbe st robot and the last robot (next to the big tent church) I was doing 50km/h and could not keep up with the big boys. Should not be a problem for a man with your pedigree........
  17. No cycling. Going to Jo'burg for a family wedding, will go for a run or two in the rarified Highveld air.
  18. Wannabe If your team breaks 8 hrs you will be in the first half of the field! My experience is 2 DC's, both in about 8 hrs. Start eating long before you feel hungry, ie at every stop I had a few bites of my wholegrain tomato and lettuce sarmies. On a long day such as the DC I like real food, one gets tired of processed energy bars. I also carry some raisins and banana with me. The gels and the high sugar content stuff I keep for emergencies, those last three hills in the last 20km.
  19. Years ago I saw an ad in Noseweek for a 9mm Parabellum "used by elderly gentleman on the way to church on Sunday mornings".

    Dropped!

Just came home a little night ride out towards Spes Bona. At the Boland / Lubbe robot I was joined (for a short while) by a rasta man on a road bike on his way back home (Fisantekraal) from work. Dressed in jeans, boots and a big bag on the back. He promptly dropped me. I did manage to draw level about four times, but that was while he was furiously punching a few messages on his cell phone. I wanted to ask him about joining our team for the DC, but at that stage he was too far ahead.
  21. I agree SlowB. The argus registration and expo is one big in your face marketing excecise. But I still entered.......
  22. 15 °C at 18:00 down to 15°C at 20:00 and no rain according to windfinder.com. I usually check the Rondebossie forecast on windfinder for rides outside Durbanville, Rondebossie is the hill just north of Spes Bona Rd.
  23. Was there on Saturday, no indication that it is going to be tarred, looks like it was ordinary maintenance.
  24. Grumps Are you familiar with Rouleur ?
  25. A coach at an American college once said:"It is not the sex the night before, but the staying up all night looking for it, that fatigues the athlete"
