  1. I am in two minds about either this momsen or a 26" Merida 1000D LITE... both for R8500... the merida however has SLX groupset and the recon gold air fork... but its 26"....
  2. What would you think the best price one could find currently on the Silverback spectra... But confimed new price of R8500 on a new Merida 1000D Lite Both bikes seem more than awesome to me
  3. I have found a 1000-D lite for under R9k Personally I dont think much else comes close spec wise at the moment
  4. I have been considering upgrading my current Merida Matts TFS 100 V for a bike with a better fork and disc brakes (I am a weekend warrior weighing 115kg, 1.9m tall) My current bike is also an XL which I find too big for me and difficult to control. Would the LITE 1000-D be a good step up... Prices around R10k seem to be very available http://merida-bikes.com/en_int/bike/38/MTB+Hardtail/MATTS+Lite+1000-D Then lastly, what would you hubbers say is a fair price to sell my 2007 Matts TFS 100 V for? R2000?
  5. Is R8500 a good price on this bike? Problem is I can't really go over R6500... but man, the bike is very nice indeed
  6. Awesome... cause that's much cheaper Thanks guys saved me a lot of bucks and time... the hub comes through again
  7. Clicking like a champ each time... Time to remove the cable (check it) flush the housing and see what happens I think
  8. It does change up and back down through gears 8 down to say 5 but no chance on the lower gears. From gears 1 it takes three shifts to move the chain and then it obviously jumps quite irratically
  9. Its a LX derailler and quite old but we really haven't abused the bikes at all... very chilled riding and the rider weighs like 50kg not like my >100kg. Yesterday a I loosened the cable, set the limit screws and setup the barrel adjusters. reattached the cable (using my dextrous two hands... no third hand tool important??) and started tuning the shifting (until it would just change up to the next cog crisply) Around 3rd or 4th cog I set it to literally crawl up to the next cog and when I try change down it won't go (I have to do 2 or 3 full turns on the barrel adjuster to get it to change down) Is the cable setting tool necessary? I can't see it playing a role with this problem
  10. Lucky I asked here before ordering... I will remove the cable and see if maybe it is a bit dirty/ catchy... if that isn't the case it can be the shifters then?? I will take a look again this evening So with a worn chain and/or cassette the chain will still shift up AND down at the right setting? albeit not too well
  11. Going to get pics tomorrow... Says the bike is as new only done around 400km with a full service at 300km. He has changed to dual sus carbon. Not sure if negotiable but man, it seems perfect...
  12. I thought the cable might be too tight but if I loosen it to the point that it just changes down in doesn't change back up?? What should I be paying for a new chain and 9 cog cassette? LX component bike... don't want to get "rooked"
  13. I was tuning a bikes derailer yesterday with the help of Parktool website I set everything (H and L) properly but when I started setting the barrel adjuster accurately I end up getting the gears just shifting up when changing but they won't shift back down easily at all (cable is clean as far as I can tell) I think the chain is worn and the cassette is possibly done. On the high cog pedalling slowly the chain is lifted at a point (missing teeth) then falls back into place?? Can I try to just replace the chain or must the cassette be replaced as well?
  14. I have never ridden or actually really looked at a mongoose. I have an option on a very nice Mongoose Meteore Elite 2009 Large (Perfect size frame for me) Basically full XT with Hayes disc brakes and a rock shox recon race fork... very well specced too. Anyone with any experience with these or opinions on the mongoose bikes in general. It is slightly out of my price range at R8500 but man... very nice components...also with tubeless conversion too check here
  15. It's huge and she has very very short legs...
  16. Thanks guys... Just printed out half the park tool website and have it sitting neatly bound in my car... Thanks work Hopefully this will go someway to calming the storm when I get home and the grilfriend's bike is still stuffed... for now
  17. I was curious if anyone here has a go to online guide for DIY servicing... I found Utah Mountain Biking which wasn't too bad but their section on derailer tuning was pretty unclear. You can tell by this that yes... I completely stuffed up my girlfriends semi-working rear derailer setup yesterday
  18. It is indeed the Nile Special... But unfortunately a cool pic that I stole off a mate not quite Nile Special ready yet... but soon. It will all depend on what I can find available. I really am not in a rush but was looking for some opinions from the clued up hubbers. Will keep looking I guess. I am also in the process of getting myself clued up on DIY repairs and tweaking. Not because of the money but I enjoy it. "Warning: Yet another post about to be placed from the rookie"
  19. Seconded! (XL bikes are gonna be tough to find used!) Defiantely considering taking the same route as you robert
  20. While I agree with the idea of simply trading in my current Merida and going for a complete new ride with higher spec... I came across an interesting point. I simply want an entry level hard tail with hydraulic disc brakes and a semi decent preloadable fork. While it may not make sense to buy the required components new (wheel set, disc set and fork), there seems to be a good amount of used components available. Say R750 for disc compatible wheel set R1000 for hydraulic disc brakes R2000 for a nice-ish air fork Call it R4000 for a nice upgrade to an entry level bike In my mind you looking at double that for a simliar specced 2010 model??? Is my kungfu flawed???
  21. R460 - I stand to be corrected. Hennie phoned me personally. Said there was discount on a large number of the helmets from the supplier bought in batches of 20... yesterday around 12h00 he took the advert off the site... If only I had decided faster!!!
  22. I am looking at a new bike but would like to know if it is possible to "stiffen" a Suntour XCM fork so that it could handle heavier loading? I am not sure if it uses a coil / oil / elastomer material or a combination of these materials? Could it be done?
  23. Wapad... I haven't seen any of the Tora SL Air forks with V Brake bosses... If yours has them I would be really keen. Up in Gauteng unfortunately but I don't courier being out of the question. If it is good for V Brakes could you pm me some pics? EDIT * I have a tora sl air fork for sale when I was using it I weighed 105 kg the steerer length is 186mm and it has had minimal use unfortunately not v-brake compatible * facepalm
  24. Are there limitations when moving ALL components to a different sized frame? Example I buy a brilliantly specced used bike, medium frame for a real deal and then move everything off that frame to an exisiting XL frame or buy a new frame... are there limitations? Apart from length of steerer on the suspension fork? Any brake problems, wheel/tyre problems?
  25. ciclismo... great fork... unfortunately it doesn't seem to have V brake bosses
