  1. Wow there's quite a lot of jealousy out there. To some people R30k is really not a lot of money so why shouldn't they spend that on a bike. Maybe if he gets serious he will buy something nicer.
  2. Sheesh I'm glad I'm not you. Well done to Jacques, soon it will be your first 100km ride!
  3. Sorry for your loss. Clearly a well loved cat.
  4. Thanks all - I live in Hout Bay so my usual routes take in the Southern Peninsula or sometimes up the West Coast towards Koeberg (including the cycle lane from town to Tableview) and although these are great routes I am looking for a change. The Durbanville area sounds good - I have not done much riding out there except for the Burger and as I am training for my 3rd Ironman something where I can get on the tribars and just go sounds ideal (the route in PE is pretty flat so I want to spend more time training on flatter routes at higher speeds). I had a bit of a close shave coming back through Fish Hoek this weekend where a driver almost ran me off the road so wider roads with good visibility would be ideal.
  5. Thanks for the tips. Looks like I am going to go explore Durbanville!
  6. Hi Anyone know of any good surface, long / flat roads with minimal traffic near Cape Town? The mountain is fun and all, but I would like to be able to ride for a while on a flatter / rolling road. Thanks for any advice! g

    IMSA 2012

My long(er) term goal is to qualify for Kona although I may need to travel somewhere to do that as there are not many slots in PE. My first IMSA was in 2010 where I did 12h35, then last year I did 11h35 (1h03 swim, 5h20 bike and 5h05 run so clearly there is a lot of room for improvement on the run). My current plan for 2012 is to race IM 70.3 in Jan then push through to the full race in April. I have been working on my run for a while now and will do my first standalone marathon in less than 2 weeks (Cape Town Marathon) so I should get a feel for how I have improved. My goal time for 2012 is 10h30 and then to continue improving to start to challenge for a slot in the coming years. Can't wait for the light to improve so I can load on the hours - I love the training!
  8. I'm still in two minds. Part of me would relish the challenge (excuse the pun!) part of me thinks I am nuts! My wife keeps telling me to go for it though! 8 days until the price goes up, got some thinking to do.... Maybe I should just bite the bullet....
  9. Excellent - thanks!
  10. Chubba, could you please let me know where you had this done? I am interested in doing the same. Thanks!
  11. Is anyone here signing up for this. I am seriously considering it but I'm a little concerned about the training through winter - and the ice cold / shark infested water ;-) Although I must admit at 2pm last Sunday I was wondering why I do tri at all and swearing to myself no more. Amazing how quickly I forget :-)
  12. Can't really compare the two based purely on distance. For example a 20km easy run can be much easier than 100km cycle. But if you run the 20km hard and ride the 100km hard then the run would be more difficult (at least it was for me last weekend during my training). I think running gets progressively more difficult as distance increases than cycling (due to the jarring). I can double the distance I cycle and as long as I get the nutrition right I am usually fine. Double the distance running and I will be really struggling.
  13. They're also designed to be more aerodynamic in themselves (which is why the rear wheel is usually tucked in close to the frame). This is because they are designed to be used in non-drafting events.
  14. J for me up from OA (I think!) last year. Have been travelling for the past 3 weeks though so will have to see how my legs go!
  15. Sure. As long as I can take a good look at their wife :-)
  16. 808's are too deep for everyday use in CT because of the wind - try to use them in a strong cross wind and you will end up walking. I have a set of Mavic Cosmic Carbones and really rate them - they are fast and sound great and because of the aluminium braking surface they are easy to live with too. If I could only choose one set of wheels I would definitely choose these.
  17. Nice to see a positive story!
  18. I would be a bit concerned that your weight ends up too far over the front of the bike. TT bikes generally have more angled forks which allows for better control even with your weight shifted forward. Pros: Cheaper as you already own the frame. Cons: Using a road bike frame in a way it was not designed to be used means there will be compromises in handling and performance (and possibly safety as the bike may end up being very twitchy).
  19. Tracked some down at Cycles Direct in Tableview. Will be paying them a visit in the morning. Thanks all!
  20. Thanks for the replies: CWC were the first people I called. They don't have any in stock although they offered to glue the tyres for me. May have to go for that option...
  21. Pretty much as the title says: anyone know where I can buy tubbie glue in Cape Town? I have called all the usual cycle shops but no luck so far. I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide. My new deep section tubular wheels are just sitting there begging to be used but I can't glue the tyres on! Thanks in advance!
  22. As a rule that's true, but bike handling skills (and guts / stupidity :-)) also come into it in.
  23. The geometry of a tri bike is different so I would say it is a big no. My tri bike and road bike feel like night and day - the difference is that huge. Otherwise just put clip on bars on your road bike...
  24. My wife and I were almost taken out by a flying plastic table which blew off the balcony of a 5th floor flat in our neighbouring building in Sea Point on Saturday. We saw the table flying through the air towards us before it landed in the road and shattered into pieces. It felt like one of those cartoons where you see flying furniture in a tornado... So yes, it was windy!
  25. Interesting - thanks for that!
