  2. I think this person might just be keen - if you ask nicely
  3. Hi all My friend emailed me the following which happened to her this morning. Just sickening. I hope this isn't one of you guys: Ok you cycling at 5h30am in the dark in constantia where street lights are rare...you come across 2 cyclists with no lights on...what do you do? Ok so I was doing a recovery ride this morning and just headed past vic hospital towards CV and was riding with both front and back lights. I said to myself I'll have to go ladies mile then reverse way around steenberg because its too dark to go normal route..even with my lights! I then hear cyclists on my tail...I'm going slowly so expect them to pass....as we pass the robots by M3 offramp they pass me...2 guys on mtbs...with no rear lights! So I shout wheres your lights...don't think they really heard me. They got caught at next robot at virgin gym and we now heading into proper dark roads and these fools have no lights...I decide to go tell them and also shoot up just ahead to check if they by some chance have front lights...nothing! I'm so flabbergasted of their stupidity especially in light(excuse pun) of all these deaths and they had nerve to block my rear light when they sat on my wheel(had I been going faster they would have still been on my wheel) So I do admit...in my state of flabbergatedness and them disrupting my safety I ask them again, but yes did throw hefty swear word in.."where are your F-ing lights"? They respond saying none of my business and were upset with my language...I say whatever and go left alongside CV, while they appear to go straight towards the nek(now thats even darker territory!) Anyway I carry on and just before kendal road I hear mtbers on my tail, turn around and its these 2 dumbasses( they could clearly see where I was thanks to my lights! and had obviously decided to come follow me and not go on their route) ... I can't really remember what they were saying..but clearly they wanted to continue arguing with me...very childish...I told them just move on and stop blocking my lights. I then head towards the left lane to turn into ladies mile at the same time the one guy starts charging towards me...what the hell? I'm now waiting for him to push me off or I don't know what...next minute he comes up and klaps me on the side of my face...I actually starred at him for a while in absolute shock - 1stly how can my comment bring you to such anger to come chasing after me to HIT me! and secondly, don't you have decency to pick on someone your own size, and 3rdly don't hit a woman!...as much as would have liked to punch him back..I had the sense not to be childish and dashed for my left turn - robot was red...so I had to jump the robot...idiots! there were several cyclist heading towards us...don't think they really saw what was happening as it was dark, but if it did get nasty I was going to start yelling for help. I'm still baffled at their behaviour. I agree I was wrong to question their lack of lights in an agressive tone, but they clearly a bunch of arrogant morons! So next time I see idiots like that, I'll ask politely where their lights are...in somesense these fools have made me feel why bother,...but that would be stupid if their actions got to me!

  5. This is the wording I posted with my Posters!!! In only 11 days time, 35000 cyclists will take part in the Pick ?n Pay Argus cycle tour. You would all have noticed the huge amounts of cyclists on the road. It seems like more then ever before. With the increased number of people training, comes the increased risk that people will get hit by cars. <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Since December last year, 3 people have lost their lives while training on <?: prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Cape Town?s roads. All three cases were preventable. The most recent death was that of Colin van Skalkwyk. Many of you will recognise the name as he was an employee for Woolworths Financial Services for many years before he left to start his own company. It hits close to home when it is someone you know. I have been cycling for 8 years, in that time I have had many close calls. And have made many friends in the cycling community. I don?t want to be the next victim. I don?t want there to be any more deaths in this ever growing community. I am writing this today to implore all road users to be aware of one another, be courteous, and be safe. We have to share our roads with every vehicle ? and a bicycle is included in that. To all the motorists: Be tolerant of other road users. Give cyclists space when passing ? 1.5m is not a lot of space when a life is at stake. If it is not safe to pass with enough space, wait. This is Cape Town time, enjoy the view. Please don?t abuse your hooters, a short hoot is far more appreciated than a long impatient one. Don?t cut us off ? we are moving faster than you think. To all the cyclists: Obey the rules of the road. You can?t cry foul if you are not respecting the rules. Wear reflective clothing at all times. You may look like a fool, but rather be an alive fool than dead and cool. Use lights ? red flashing at the back and white flashing at the front. Ride single file on busy roads (with in reason). Stay within the yellow lane where possible. Always wear a helmet. I hope that the next two weeks will be safe on the roads, for everyone. Nix

  11. Thanx Ronelle - Don't you think we're looking fresh after our 68km break?!?!! OK ... I'll bite. Please tell us about your 68km break.... Ok, if you insist On the start line, Tony Roberts (our comm) came to us and asked us to prove that ladies could actually race. So when they set us off, I went off fast, and Lilo and Sue came with. We got a 200m gap on the ladies quickly and we kept going. Over the first rollers we couldn't see them anymore, so we decided to push hard get a good gap on them. We got 2min on them before the left turn towards Riebeek Kasteel. We hit the climb with 2:30 split. We were hoping to stay away, but shortly after A and some tandems passed us, the chasing group reconnected - with 28km to go. We had a few attacks but all were brought back. Jade Roberts doing her best to break us. In the last 7km, 4 of us lost touch, but were able to fight to catch back (watch Supercycling in a months time to see that!!) At 500m to go Cathy made a false sprint, and the game was on. Jennie took the sprint, with Jade and Cathy close behind. Kasha followed and I came in 5th. Thrilled and exhausted!!
  12. Thanx Ronelle - Don't you think we're looking fresh after our 68km break?!?!!

  16. ThinkBike has been great in helping me with a cycling awareness campaign that I'm trying to put together at work. We just need to tailor the messages to suit cyclists more.
  17. This is terrible news, yet again. Hope he recovers. With regards to Golden arrow and many transport companies they all have complaints lines. Phone them and keep phoning them. take the number of the bus and report these guys. I do!
  18. I too had to ride home in the gale yest, and i was terrified of being blown into a car or worse. The usual trip take 25-30min, last night it took me 45! I was blown across the road while heading up a side road, fortunatly otherwise i could have been squashed . The gusts were the worse. On the otherhand the sea looked amazing!!
  19. When are you starting the testing and do you accept women?Nix TCR2009-02-10 04:55:34
  20. why don't all the "killarney girls" get together and blow the race apart from the start. you should be able to halve the bunch by riding hard past F'kraal and on the R312. then they latch on to A and the are together anyway...... I'm not sure how strong us "Killarney girls" will be against the pro's that will be riding!! And Fanie - as much as we'd like to jump onto A - that's not allowed!! Ja' date=' but whats allowed and what happens are 2 different things. Going to be tricky separating your group and a the A bunch with 100 riders....... hope it works though, otherwise senseless. [/quote'] Our comm holds us back! Becomes a bit of neutral zone to allow a gap to grow! We can't garentee that ladies who get dropped don't jump on to passing groups, we just trust that they don't!
