  3. I will be in Durban Thursday & Friday and staying in Umhlanga so you could collect from me or I can post them.
  4. I was personally disappointed by the number of cyclists that did not wear a black armbands. I stood at the start with about 10 rolls of black insulation tape and offered it to cyclists. Most cyclists asked what it was about so they were unaware about the tragic deaths in Oudsthoorn. Sign-Up distributed 5000 leaflets at the expo (not nearly enough, but everything costs money. Thanks to JeremyD for sponsoring these). BigH, I applaud your efforts, but it seems that no matter what you or I try to do cyclists will not support us. It can't be a lack of funds judging by the amount of carbon and fancy equipment at the Argus. It is sad and I can only hope that cyclists will start by doing the right thing. However, Sign-Up Cyclists Safety Initiative will carry on regardless and will do it's utmost to save lives!!
  5. coetzee, I can't believe we virtually stood right next to each other and I did not say hi. It is that goatee that you have!!
  6. thanks bobbie
  7. All it cost was a piece of black electrical tape!
  8. I was in fact introduced to Lance by Daryl who is the Patron for Sign-Up. He just thanked me for my contribution to safety and mentioned how important initiatives like Sign-Up is to creating awareness out there. The Sign-Up logo was created by the Hub's own Mampara!! Thanks mampara everybody liked my T-shirt. These will be available to purchase on sign-up.co.za in the next month
  9. Here is a photo of me talking Safety with Mr.Armstrong on the start line yesterday.
  10. keep left ....... pass right....... and have fun!!
  11. If only the same passion displayed here can be used to buy some stickers from me, the road will be a much safer place!!
  12. whether it is free (like this one) or you have to pay for it (like Sign-Up's) cyclists seem very reluctant to help out but will moan & b!tch when someone is killed. Really Sad & I ask the LORD to keep you all safe out there!
  13. well done Hairy on doing your part in making cycling safer for us all!!
  14. Sad Sad news! I wish them both a speedy recovery!! If anyone would like to help contribute to raise awareness see here[/urlhttps://www.bikehub.co.za/forum_posts.asp?TID=79226&KW=
  15. Thanks Jeremy!!
  16. ewep, like I mentioned I apologise for hijacking this thread and no malice was intended. The reason for the seperate sticker is that Sign-Up relies on sponsorship & donations and this was one way of getting some much needed funds. As you are aware, I was one of the guys that attended the first Think Bike cyclists meeting. I believe that Sign-Up can work with Think Bike and I am having a meeting next month with CGC as they have asked me to help with the Think Bike CGC campaign. Hope this makes sense.
  17. Hi Super I have such a vehicle with flashing strobe lights etc and use to ride behind the lido bunch. After numerous rides I stopped this as I only received 1 offer for fuel. Good Luck!! I am available for club rides & long distance rides such as Durban etc.

  19. Press Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Wednesday 10 March 2010 CYCLISTS TO WEAR BLACK ARMBANDS AT CYCLE TOUR Thousands of the 35000 entrants of Sunday?s Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour will wear black armbands to show a collective sorrow at the death of three cyclists hit by a motorist outside Oudtshoorn on Monday morning. Frank Nel (60), Jan Elloff (73) and Magda van Lill (50) died instantly when the bunch they were riding in was hit by a bakkie overtaking a truck on the R62, nine kilometres outside Oudtshoorn. ?This is yet another tragic incident which could have been avoided,? said Hendrik Lemmer, Director of Cycling South Africa?s Road Cycling Commission. ?On behalf of Cycling South Africa, I?d like to extend condolences to the families of those cyclists who died. I also want them to know that our appeal to cyclists to wear black armbands in the Cycle Tour on Sunday is more than a sign of our collective sorrow, it?s a commitment to do something about the lack of general awareness of cyclists on our roads.? Lemmer says that Cycling South Africa is committed to working with the authorities to make the roads safer for cyclists. ?It?s not something that can be done overnight, because it?s a matter of raising awareness and changing attitudes,? explained Lemmer. ?But we?re determined to succeed. We have the most active recreational cycling culture in the world and it?s growing daily as more and more people discover the health and fitness benefits of the sport. On behalf of all cyclists in this country, I appeal to motorists to please be more aware.? On Tuesday, it was announced that one of South Africa?s top professional cyclists, Daryl Impey, had become a patron of Sign-Up, a national campaign aimed at raising funds to erect more government-approved ?beware cyclist? signs along popular cycling routes throughout the country. ?I think cyclists and motorists need to begin by obeying the laws of the road,? said Impey. ?Cyclists need to realise we are not owners of the roads and vice versa. I believe we (the cyclists) should set an example for others to follow. It takes one second to slow down but also one second to kill someone, mutual respect is what we need.? Impey races on Lance Armstrong?s Radioshack team and is a rising star on the international cycling stage. He is currently in the country accompanying Armstrong during his visit this week to Cape Town in conjunction with the JAG Foundation. Both will compete in Sunday?s Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour, which, in terms of numbers, is the world?s largest cycle race. ?It is great to have Daryl as an ambassador and patron of Sign-Up and it will hopefully bring us much deserved exposure?, said Shaun Hannie, founder and chairman of Sign-Up. ?At this time, this is the only national cyclist awareness campaign in South Africa and it?s completely reliant on sponsorship and donations. Frustratingly, we can?t brand national road signs with corporate logos, but we appeal to companies that support cycling to support Sign-Up. One extra sign could safe one cyclist?s life?? 20. This is a press release going out today. Top SA cyclist Daryl Impey has become the ambassador and patron for Sign-Up Cyclists Safety Initiative. Sign-Up is a national, not-for-profit campaign aimed at improving the safety of all cyclists using the nation?s roads, whether for daily transport, sport or recreation. Impey has been cycling competitively since the age of 15 and represented South Africa at the Junior World Championships in 2002. Impey says ?Going to the world championships and seeing the Pro?s and seeing how big the setup was in Europe, was everything I ever wanted. I set my next goal, first turn pro in South Africa, prove myself and then make the jump to Europe.? He is currently a member of the world famous team RadioShack, where he is teammates with the legendary Lance Armstrong. Both of whom will take part in the Pick ?n Pay Cape Argus cycle tour this Sunday. ?It is great to have Daryl as an ambassador and patron of Sign-Up and it will hopefully bring us much deserved exposure?, says Shaun Hannie, founder and chairman of Sign-Up. 21. This is really a sad day for SA Cycling and again my heartfelt condolences to family & friends. Please wear a black armband to pay respect to the deceased. Sign-Up has promised that it will undertake a vigorous media education campaign. All the ideas are in place but we need funding for this. I have approached Cyclelab but they are unable to help (note unable and NOT unwilling). I have plans for both TV & print media adverts but need funding. So if anyone knows a company that is willing to sponsor and or donate towards this please mail me at shaun@sign-up.co.za. I appeal once again to all those cyclists to be safe out there. Lets start by adhering to the rules that are there to protect us. When a tragic event like this occurs lets not give people reason to point fingers. I appeal to all motorists to be more vigilant and to exercise patience out there.Remember cyclists are traffic too and have loving families at home. PLEASE, PLEASE YIELD TO LIFE!!! We need sponsors for the attached bumper stickers as well. shaunh2010-03-09 02:26:39
