  1. Spotted a 5.5" travel Mountain Cycle Fury frame, with Marzocchi shock, for R3600. What's it like for building up a trail / all mountain rig?
  2. Artemis in the flesh... review coming soon

    Shoes!

Did some phoning and followed some leads - found my size at Renegade (town), Surf Centre (Canal Walk) and Tekkie Town in S-West, will go check them out tomorrow Surf centre has the TNT II which is a mid top. I love the fact that it comes in orange, but I'm not convinced about the mid top bit...

    Shoes!

I've tried City Rock 3 times for five-tens in my size (UK 12/13) but with no joy. The high import duty and the sizing risk have stopped me from ordering online, so right now I'm just on the hunt for a pair of sneakers I can dedicate to the MTB... I was very happy with how my Vans gripped (good old waffle sole) until they died - where the hell in Cape Town can you buy a well priced pair of Vans, with a decent range of sizes? Anyone?

    Life Cycles

My favourite part of the narration: "These days, that mystery is hard to find. The river is distant, the sky clouded with concrete. For many of us, life's great adventure, all its beauty, all its connection, sails by, unnoticed. Funny thing is, the river's never that far off. This is the story of a way back in, to the rush of moving forward. Born from the earth's crust, grown from the seeds of innovation, forged in the fires of industry. The earth's most efficient machine creates its most efficient animal - the bicycle. Our noblest invention."
  6. please, for the love of swiss cheese, ride whatever bike where you want, how you want, and set up in whatever way tickles your fancy. if you take a step back a bit and look at the world of mountain biking at large downhillers' bars are getting lower and everyone else's are getting higher. but hey, who cares!? if it works, RIDE IT LIKE THAT it's almost like the whole clipless-for-downhill debate. flat pedals and 5-10's must have sold like hotcakes when sam hill won that championship! leave the fashionista stuff to the roadies!

    Life Cycles

A mate of mine bought the DVD. yes, it's slow - so what, I love it! it's not your average bike movie, it's meant to be beautiful, thought provoking and make you want to ride! I love the music, I am tired of your typical punk / metal / rap bike movie soundtracks... the music, combined with insane camera work and crisp editing - 10/10 for me!

    Life Cycles

Watched "Life Cycles" tonight. Absolutely epic! Anyone else seen it yet? Your thoughts?
  9. New hydration packs from First Ascent, with Nalgene bladders. Look good - RRP R499 and R699 - your thoughts? http://www.ratherberiding.co.za/thirsty-first-ascents-new-hydration-packs/
  10. that is the plan hey. 1st prize is a Santa Cruz Butcher frame built up with the budget stuff (upgrade later) I have on my current bike and a lekker fork. Failing that, I've seen a 2nd hand Specialized Stumpjumper and Giant Trance and Reign, all for decent moola. And if none of those materialise then yea, 456 in either steel or carbon we MUST hook up that ride sometime. can you believe I still haven't done Tokai! Shocking I tell you!
  11. you guys are killing me
  12. yeah I'm like 6' / 6'1" thereabouts
  13. 1.85m tall - what size is your bike moretrails? I'm trying dude, I have the motorbike up for sale at the moment in an attempt to re-appropriate funds! I am killing my current bike!
  14. Yeah I usually do go on top tube Top tube: Mongoose L: 610 456 L: 597 456 XL: 607 I guess it's not a moerse difference. Let's hope someone in the Cape buys a 456C in L that I can try
  15. I checked the on-one site last night, and according to their geo measurements the 456C XL is closer in size to my Mongoose Tyax (L) than the 456C L so now I'm con-fussed
  16. What's the Giant Trance like?
  17. while i've got you answering questions - they say that the 456 can run UP TO 160mm up front - but what's better suited to the geo - 150mm or 160mm? for example, if I had money to burn and I was going to equip it with an adjustable travel fork, would i be better off with 110/130/150 or 120/140/160? hypothetically speaking, of course...
  18. ooo, that's an attractive price... i better start saving!!
  19. ok that still looks good... price?
  20. the spirit is keen but the wallet is weak let's see what the coming months hold, but i'm not holding my breath on another note, tell me more about the carbon 456 - for some reason i only discovered it now. is it only available in the black / red combo, or can you still get it in plain black? price?
  21. Thanks for the response, considering one of these, just trying to work out how well it will perform as a trail / singletrack rig
  22. Karakoram, if you don't mind - what sort of riding do you do with your 29er? I read somewhere else on the hub that one hubber had an issue with wheel flex on contermanskloof's singletrack with a demo unit - have you had any issues with your wheels?
  23. Anyone know anything about Cannondale's Trail SL 29er? At 10k it looks like a good way to get into the 29er scene (I know someone who's looking). Is it any good?

    1x9

I'm thinking of converting my Mongoose Tyax Super to a 1x9 setup - basically 1 chain ring on the front (32), and the usual 9 at the back. So no front derailler, and no front shifter - less maintenance and less stuff. what's the best way to do this? should I just remove the small and big chain rings and add / fabricate a bash guard (the cheaper option), or is a new crank set in order? seems most of the single chain ring crank sets are geared for freeride / downhill (36t or bigger) and I'd prefer a 32t - I did find one (Bontrager Earl SS) that was a 32t, dunno if it's any good though: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=59278 secondly, are chain guides essential? obviously when you're normally on the middle chain ring, the chain is at quite an angle to reach the biggest / smallest rings at the back... will this be a problem with only 1 chain ring on the front? any advise and tips would be appreciated.
  25. sorry to drag up an old (ish) thread, but the Karakoram retails for R7995 - saw it today... surely equipping it with a tougher wheel set will sort out the flex?
