  1. Fun on a budget - Rock Shox Sektor Coil U-Turn (110 - 150mm) R3500 On-one Summer Season frame +- R2500
  2. All mountain is not a myth... the Giant Reign is awesome, I've ridden the 2010 and it can climb and descend. A mate has an 07 and he swears by it. 07/08s go for R10k - 16k My dream bike is a Santa Cruz Nomad or Butcher. Failing that, a Reign. Failing that, a 2nd hand Reign. Failing that (and currently the most plausible scenario) an On-One 456 Summer Season with a Rock Shox Sektor with adjustable travel
  3. Posting this year 'cos I figure it's the type of products that would appeal to this crowd. Just some quick comments on some new bits and pieces I got for my bike... Riding style: mix of XC, trail, singletrack and all mountain type stuff Bike: Mongoose Tyax Super Truvativ BooBar 20mm rise, 780mm width. It's really wide, like, REALLY wide. Suits me, as I'm a big guy - sitting on the bike, you feel in control and it feels lekker, but riding it home from the LBS to my house it felt weird and I suspect on longer cross country rides it may be too wide. Already thinking I shoulda gone for the 740mm but supplier didn't have - so we'll wait a couple of rides and see, I can't really comment after just 5 minutes on the bike. I like the low rise and the sweep, it really is a great shape. Less room for controls than I thought - looking at the photo, that's as far in as my shifters will go. So if I do want to go 740, I'll have to flog these and take a knock, as cutting them down isn't an option. Colour and detailing are kickass though. Lizard Skins Charger Lock-on grips I love lock on grips, but the last 2 pairs I had (Aerozine and Jet Black Delta) have been way too hard, leaving me with numb hands on the climbs. The charger is much softer with it's ribbed design, and so far after a couple of rides very comfy. We'll see how durable and long lasting they are. DMR V12 pedals yeah, so the white's not going to last, but who cares? I am a fan of flats and no matter how much people try to convince me I won't budge. Flats suit my clumsy riding style, and are overall a cheaper setup than clipless which leaves me money for other things. The DMR V12 pedals stick to my Vans sneakers like poop on a woolen blanket. I am seriously amazed at how well they grip. Have yet to do a proper ride and will report back when I do... Will give more feedback when I've done some rides
  4. that too! the overall condition is fine but there are some pretty rutted bits that take a bit of the flow / joy out of it. Tygerberg MTB have said they'll be attending to this soon.
  5. Majik forest is nearby and free - as such I ride it 2-4 times a week, depending how things go. Besides for the opening climb being a bitch, the singletrack is flowy and interesting, so I enjoy riding there. unfortunately it seems like Majik is a struggle - for one, there's lots of erosion to worry about so the trail needs a lot of maintenance, then there's the excellent potential for downhill bits and jumps, but the building of such either causes more erosion in places or puts the agreement with the landowners in jeoprady (as no-one but Tygerberg MTB may build trail). then of course, there's the fact that it's an open, free spot, so you have the pedestrians to contend with - it's only a matter of time before a cyclist and a pedestrian connect, which is going to make things even harder for Tygerberg MTB... I say enjoy it while it lasts...
  6. Read this description on a site I came across: A wonderland of single track, jumps, drop offs, bridges, downhill tracks, mud, rocks, hardpack, roots, pretty dirty girls, total lack of pedestrians, the lot. yeah right
  7. The HD170 is R3 799 from www.actioncameras.co.za - I haven't tested it for night riding unfortunately, but it does have a night mode for shooting in low light
  8. here you go, i took a screen shot of the settings i used also - rather upload to vimeo or youtube (and then if you want to share it on facebook just post the link) - much better in terms of upload limits and quality
  9. Go to vimeo.com and read their guidelines for export settings - then try apply those settings as best you can in movie maker
  10. It's too long to repost it, but check out my review of the HD170 on my blog: http://www.ratherberiding.co.za/review-drift-hd170-action-cam/ In summary I think the HD170's a kick-ass unit, and I had a ton of fun using it. Take a look at the review and tell me what you think...
  11. Thanks - where do I get the permit, and where exactly are the trails? What are they like?
  12. So is the site live now? If so it looks like it needs a ton of work still
  13. Does anyone know if any of the trails up in the hills off Highlands Road in the Grabouw area are rideable?
  14. Thanks dudes. Price wise I think I'd rather go for the On-One, but damn, this frame does look sweet
  15. What do you guys think of this? Long travel steel frame hardtail (competition for the On-One 456, but more expensive) http://www.ragleybikes.com/2011/01/ragley-bagger-288-data-sheet/ Has a Allu brother as well - the Troof... Available in SA?
  16. So Cap - I see a GoPro on your lid - where's the footage?
  17. So tell us how the armour performed?
  18. and? what's the verdict? is this you...?
  19. I love my bike...
  20. here's my humble little rig...
  21. I might come spectate... will the "regular" singletrack also be open on the Saturday, and will there be a shuttle? or does the downhill course cross the "regular" singeltrack?
  22. dude, that's a bummer when's the race? EDIT: nvm saw the thread
  23. You always feel it the next day, ugh, feel like I've been put through a tumble dryer!
  24. https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/96135-giant-reign-1-large-2008/ if you read his last post, he offers it with different components for R9k EDIT: DUH just saw your replies on that thread...
  25. there's a reign like your old one for sale here on the hub, but unfortunately the timing is all wrong for me . I rode the 2010 Reign X at the Ride Before You Buy, and absolutely loved it, although it was the wrong size for me. Also climbs surprisingly well for such a big rig!
