  1. Hilarious, I've JUST seen one today at CWC - took it for a spin round the lot and I love it - coincidence that you bought it today! R7995 at CWC, let me know how it performs, I love the look
  2. Helmet cams are excellent fun for mountain biking. Check this video I threw together, ALL shot on the HD170... because the HD170 has a standard size threaded tripod mounting point, it can be mounted to all sorts of things... the "off the bike" bits were shot using a universal clamp attached to anything I could find... http://www.vimeo.com/17135715
  3. That Mongoose Amasa looks like a good bet - the Tyax series is also cool - models ranging from 4-6k (I think)...
  4. A few things to consider: - most helmet cams will be a little shaky when mounted to the bars - helmet is a much better option - most HD cams will give a fish eye effect when taking stills - since they are all wide angle lenses Check out the Drift HD 170 - tested it recently and was very happy, though it's not waterproof to 20m Good place to buy = www.actioncameras.co.za
  5. This one: http://www.buycycle.co.za/buygear/jerseys-mens/fox-racing-en-2/fox-racing-hc-jersey-blue-black-fox.html Looks like I was just in time - out of stock now
  6. Ordered a cycling shirt from BuyCycle - just arrived with a free water bottle in the bag! Ja, I know, it's just a water bottle, but hey, it's the little things that count
  7. Love shopping at Geco - that's where I bought my bike. Also a great bunch of guys. Don't like the Indola shorts though, prefer how the Endura's feel, but that's personal taste
  8. unsure
  9. Ok so it's more for the MX crowd, but I still think it's pretty cool and could probably work for downhill: http://www.ratherberiding.co.za/modular-acerbis-cosmo-roost-deflector/ Basically you can wear it as one unit, or just a roost guard if you want. Also neck brace compatible
  10. Sorry - missed your post... R750 Unfortunately, they are my xmas present, so I have yet to ride in them, bah humbug! Also have one of these on the way: http://www.buycycle.co.za/buygear/gloves/fox-en-2-3-4-5-6/fox-racing-hc-jersey-fox.html

    Gear watch!

Lizard skins now available at CWC - http://www.cwcycles.co.za/results?brand=193 Tried on the knee pads - very cool and well priced http://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/lizardskins-knee-body-armor
  12. Can't be the same pair I bought - the liner on the Burner is not removable, and there is no press stud!
  13. Very cool little video on the correct riding position for descending, lots of theory: http://www.vitalmtb.com/videos/member/HOW-TO-RIDE-BETTER-DOWNHILL,4679/ZEPtechniques,5542
  14. After taco'ing the front rim on my Mongoose Tyax, I decided it was time for something a little stronger. You see, while I bought a hardtail, I am more a trail rider than a cross country rider... I also come from riding motorcycles off road, where a little amount of throttle gets you over or through most things... i.e. I lack finesse. I'm also not the lightest guy around at 115kg So I decided that I needed a rim that could withstand my weight, riding style and lack of skill. After much discussion with Bradley at Geco Cycles, I opted to lace 2 Alex Supra BH rims to my existing (Formula) hubs, with new spokes. Alex's site lists the Supra BH under "downhill", with the following description: Features Downhill thrasing allowed Doublewall construction Stainless steel eyelets Tech Spec Pin joint 32 or 36 holes, silver, black W/SSE 26"-610g, ERD 534.85mm, ETRTO 559X25mm The whole exercise cost me roughly R1 700 including the rims, DT Swiss stainless spokes, and the labour (I think this amount might also have included servicing the hubs). The result is a set of wheels that are, so far, bulletproof. I have ridden them through and over more than my previous wheels and they are still (after an initial tune up) running true, doing wonders for my confidence and enjoyment while riding. They are noticeably heavier when climbing (first ride I did with them was the 40km at Eselfontein), but I am content with the weight penalty for the peace of mind they offer me. They are also nice and wide, so grip down singletrack is good, and I find myself riding over rocks and things without fear of pinching the tire / tube. The new models grey and white decals are considerably less "loud" than the previous red decals, and the wheels look great with the stainless spokes. I have a Kenda Nevegal on the front and Excavator on the back - very happy with these as well.. So, if you're looking for an affordable set of bomb proof rims for trail riding (and I suppose light downhill and freeride), look no further I am convinced these wheels will make their way onto my next bike...
  15. the jump at 00:05 - where is that?
  16. Thanks! working on a slightly better edit - I'm no video editor, and I'm using Windows Live Movie Maker - which is easy to use for noob idiots like myself!
  17. Here's another one, shot yesterday on the HD170 as well: Full screen it and switch on HD to see how crazy crisp this camera is...
  18. Yip, I hear you! Some sales guys look at you like you're mad and then try to sell you the benefits of clipless. Dammit, I know what I want! You're not going to change my mind! When I spoke to City Rock they didn't inspire much confidence. They wanted upfront payment for a special order, but couldn't guarantee the delivery time (said it could be up to 4 months), and didn't know if they'd have my size on their next order BUT they guy did take my name and number so hopefully I get a call for them sometime. Buycycle are trying to track down old stock Shimano AM40's for me... not quite as good at the Five Tens but still much better than skate sneakers, and cheaper... In the meantime, I am considered getting my vans resoled (the sole is worn through)
  19. Why is it so hard to find a decent pair of "flat" mountain bike shoes? Cape rock now imports Five Ten - great - do they have my size? No! Will they on the next shipment? Maybe! AAARgh. I can get them on special order, but it could take up to 3 months! And according to one bike shop I spoke to, Shimano doesn't bring their flat shoes into SA! Does this drive anyone else mad, or am I literally the only one out there not using clipless? It seems my options are import myself, pay through my ring and risk the wrong size OR stick to skate sneakers, that don't have the grip or durability of the five tens or shimanos... Anyone?
  20. rad thanks
  21. There's a seesaw? I must have missed that (rode Hillcrest for the first time yesterday)... So basically, it comes out at the start of the descent... the good stuff
  22. Hey hubbers, quick question - if you do the Contermanskloof trail and then hop onto Kliprug, where does it connect to the Hillcrest trails?
  23. I'd look at getting to each trail by car (I live in the northern suburbs) to hit the trail at 7 at the latest (that includes the Grabouw / Elgin area trails) I'd probably do the Friday trail in the afternoon...
  24. yeah I hear you - forgot to mention, I still need to work those days! I just work from home, and December is quiet, so I can afford a couple of hours off in the morning if I get an early start
  25. With December around the corner I should have some free time on my hands... so I reckon, wouldn't it be fun to hit up a different trail every day, for a whole week!? I'm thinking: Monday: Meerendal Tuesday: Contermanskloof Wednesday: Hillcrest Thursday: Jonkershoek Friday: Tokai Saturday: Oak Valley Sunday: Lebanon I could even combine Contermanskloof and Hillcrest into 1 day, and fit another one in. Eden? Majik Forest? Delvera? Grabouw MTO? Anyone want to join me?
