  1. It would help if you mentioned which area you're going to be in.

Why not just get a courier to take yours down?  Shouldn't cost much, and certainly less than trying to rent one.

Thanks I forgot to add location. Courier fees would be from abroad

  2. Hi everyone

I am travelling down to my parents for some time to work from their place and its impossible for me to bring down my trainer. I will be based down in Cape Town (Northern Suburbs).

I am therefore trying to establish where I am able to rent an indoor smart trainer for a month or two maximum (May and June). I know that its the cooler/winter months soon so everyone may or may not be using theirs.

Whether it be a bike shop or an individual, I am willing to pay money to rent it.

    Thanks

  3. So here is some more information and feel free to ask me. I currently live in Amsterdam and must admit, the last tie I paid €135 was when they literally stripped my bike, had the carbon frame fixed and re-assembled with upgraded parts.

As an example, last week I had a spoke replaced and my wheel trued (for my SA MTB) and it cost me €20.

What I do find strange is that general bicycle maintenance services are of a lower standard, but that leaves space for you to figure it out for yourself (YouTube is great!). Every now and then you do get great service.

There are PLENTY of bicycle shops, just not how we know them in SA. You will find at least one shop on every block in the city of Amsterdam, in the suburbs and smaller towns a lot less. These shops predominantly focus on servicing Dutch oma-fiets/bikes and not Road or MTB bikes, for that, there are fewer proper shops, even in the larger cities.

Yes the Dutchies dont make make conversation and in general thats how they have always been, each to themselves. They dont make friends easily and are fairly clicky (similar to some SA towns too). But once they accept you, then they do a lof of effort with you. They sometimes dont do the effort with expats because they see us as temporary and thats why they dont invite you into their lives. Cant argue, I also hated leaving my good friends when I left and you can imagine having to go through it over and over.

Join a club and you'll make loads of friends and people with the same interests. Just because the Dutch cycle everywhere, doesn't make them all cyclists. In SA most people who commute are also more serious riders.

Jakkals, you left just as they abolished scooters from the cycle lanes in the city. They envisage full roll out of this law by 2020 throughout the Netherlands - THANK GOODNESS!

Here are few things that pissed me off about the Dutch...Cycling related.

Dutchies in general are k∆k cyclists in-spite of having cycled their whole lives. They don't signal as often as they should and like to cut you off when turning left. A lot of them don't use lights at night which has caused an accident when cycling home one night.

They allow small scooters on the bike lane which cause problems with youngsters not respecting other bike lane users and racing or riding recklessly.

Bike shops don't really care about you as a loyal member and can be rude and patronizing when you ask a "stupid" question. I also had my bike boxed up before immigrating to Canada and the job was a little half assed (will invest in a decent bike box). They also don't wash your bike when servicing and charge a lot for doing really simple maintenance.

Other Dutch cyclists (recreation or sport) are pretty friendly and fun to ride with so there is no complaint there other than the lack hills :P

I happy be renting an Airbnb from a cyclist in Hamilton ON, and was immediately invited to ride with their group and giving some recommendations for bike shops in the area.

Advice given to me about bike shops in NL is buy the tools and do it yourself cause they are not likely to do a good job. If you were wondering a bike shop in NL will charge you €135 per hour.

  4. I'm more specifically referring to other websites, like the Aliexpress etc. You cant compare Amazon to them. Amazon and anything else I buy in neighboring countries do actually arrive within a week as you have mentioned  ^_^

Any I once ordered a parcel from Germany to be delivered in SA - it took them 3 weeks to clear in Frankfurt

Im from the UK and you get your parcels the Next day from Amazon and within the week from anywhere else around the world

If you look at the transport links ... the Parcels hit SA within a few days and stays stagnate while customs and SARS fleece you off with custom duties for the ANC gravy train and that just increases the cost of living in the country

Its crap buying from overseas as the parcels take on average a few months to leave the JHB hub to your post office...

  5. Just to give you guys some insights I see on my side of the world (Netherlands). Recently there have been a number of news articles about the increase in online shopping and the enormous amount of infrastructure (man power) required to mange deliveries and check parcels at customs.

Even 1st world countries are struggling with the demand for man power to get them to their purchasers.

    ------- Edited and added -------

The just of my message is not to say it's all doom and gloom. What I am trying to say is that e-commerce globally is on the rise (30% increase in EU last year) and as a result there is a lack in man power to clear items and get them to their owners. It's been better managed in other countries.

If you recall, the SA Post Office implemented fees on releasing items due to the volume of orders they had started receiving. Hopefully they use that money to invest in infrastructure and man power to solve the problems.

  6. Thanks Jackes, Last month was my first month on Momentum - still trying to figure out how I am going to maximise the points.

  7. Are these caps in the CPT store yet and what are the going rates?

Excited about the new cycling cap we have developed - looks like an old school cotton cycling cap, but unlike cotton, these are fully printable... Should be ready for custom orders in a couple weeks time. Stock ones also will start appearing in our shops before the end of September - 8 unique designs already in production and counting.

Time to up your Cap game

  8. This was a fantastic day out.

Goodie bag - replace the sun screen sachets, it is winter. The rest was great (Cup, Lube, Bum cream)

Route and marshalls - Route was marked well and there were sufficient marshalls.

The lead out police car was HORRIFIC - we ended up sprinting like maniacs to the start of the gravel. This should be a non racing zone. Eventually the entire bunch was split up in the dark and cars were passing us with oncoming traffic.

The BEST rooster koek with bacon, egg and cheese I have had (and the droewors and barones rounded it off).

Perhaps provide a route profile stick in the bag - we printed our own for the bikes and it does help. We could then compare what was lying ahead vs what the bike computers had already recorded at that point in time (Could easily see the route would be in excess of 2300m vs the 1900 said at the start) - this is important as some people program themselves for only what is communicated.

Other than that, great race. I am sure I'll be back.

  9. Is one able to purchase a day license in advance? I would like to purchase a ticket for a friend, but we are doing a route beforehand and entering from a location on Bottelary close to the Engen side (On Stellenbosch crossing).

Can I purchase tonight for tomorrow is the question?

  10. Is there an email address or contact number where I can lodge a complaint in respect of the customs? This is the second shipment I have brought in relating to cyling nutrition and EVERYTIME I have had problems.

The first time only half my product arrived (gels) and now, with my second package, they did not close the nutrition bottle's lid properly and half the product/powder was in the box.

What is the use if I bring in stuff if I suffer a loss every time. As well, I have an item classified under the wrong tariff code, obviously the f&@ktard sitting at customs cannot read on the box when it says pressure gauge and classifies it as a foot pump...

  11. There are a number of people here that support Dave and hate Dave. Yes he did wrong and to me, it doesn't matter what you chose to do, if its illegal, you need to bear the brunt of your actions.

That being said, I am not sure that one drug is worse than the other...how many of us have broken the traffic laws?? Not once, I don't believe you... The law is the law, not matter how small or big. If you break it, even just slightly, you have contravened!

He has served his time and I certainly hope he makes a good come back, without a sponsor and can show that he can still make a success and take some needed prize money.
