  2. Wonder how those data would look if they were from SA - just a thought? The web is great - you can always find data to support whatever view you have - see this us helmet data some intersting reading from this is: Bicycle Helmet Effectiveness * Bicycle helmets have been shown to reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 85 percent and the risk of brain injury by as much as 88 percent.Bicycle helmets have also been shown to offer substantial protection to the forehead and midface. * It is estimated that 75 percent of bicycle-related fatalities among children could be prevented with a bicycle helmet. * Universal use of bicycle helmets by children ages 4 to 15 could prevent between 135 and 155 deaths, between 39,000 and 45,000 head injuries, and between 18,000 and 55,000 scalp and face injuries annually. * Child helmet ownership and use increases with the parent’s income and education level, yet decreases with the child’s age. Children are more likely to wear a bicycle helmet if riding with others (peers or adults) who are also wearing one.In a national survey of children ages 8 to 12, 53 percent reported that a parental rule for helmet use would persuade them to wear a helmet, and 49 percent would wear a helmet if a state or community law required it.
  3. What about us all just wearing our helmets to be good examples to our kids - even if we don’t like it (same applies to seatbelts). May save your kid's (or someone else’s) life one day? Even a small knock on the head can kill – or have other long-term horrible effects - and helmets do help!
  4. Wife bought a scooter from there a few months back - except for a few cases of stretching the truth a little - perhaps to make the sale - all is fine so far. Will now check extra carefully when it comes back from service - not that I should have to.
  5. I do miss living in Stllenbosch
  6. Thought u were serious there for a sec
  7. I thought this thread was about people selling powerbalance bands on the Hub
  8. Ya - when I came back to Pretoria from living in Umtata for a while people thought I was joking when I said people were far nicer in general in Umtata - I was not joking - Pretoria needs an attitude adjustment!
  9. Yep - the inside guard could be the problem. Happened to my boy's bike too. Could not find just the guard so bought a whole new crank with guard inside and out for R110 at cajees (I know, I know but was the only place I that could help).
  10. My son - almost 4 now loves his and has done so for nearly 2 years. Its light and easy to use. I fully recommend them. We never did get the extra pedals - tried one in a shop and seemed the seat was too low (was highest it could go) for him when peddling. He also has a normal bike - 12" Avalanche max and is learning to pedal on that now - but still prefers the JD bug more.
  11. Only knew him on the hub - clearly a fine fellow. Deepest sympathies to the family.
  12. One of my boys has the "runs" this morning so had to stay at home Hope this is done again.
  13. What our navy saves us in protecting our fisheries from poachers from other countries may well be worth more that what the navy cost us. I will try get the figures next week and post back. Things are not always as simple as they may seem. Navies also need also need to know how to work with others they may help or need help from later. Any navy people who can comment?
  14. Where SA has a good few world leading scientists and a fairly good base of mediocre ones is whereas we have our greatest natural recourse - in the biological sciences. As most people don’t care much for our natural world and don’t realise what these people make for SA money wise and save SA money wise it simply does not get noticed by the public.
  15. Probably not a normal problem but check the headset - I bought a frame with a 1.5" tube and now I have to buy a reducer headset to use the old normal 1/1.8" steerer in it - an extra R500+ The rest seem fine on my build over.
  16. What time is early - am keen!
  17. Or a 2010 phoenix - some were going for 5k something on special at a few places? But Saturn should please for a while!
  18. Thanks - just before I head off there the bonking merc reminds me of my ride this Sunday Morning where I passed a cop car in the UP sports grounds - bottom corner under some trees - in which a lady police person had to rapidly pull up her dress and the other person just ducked! Assume they were not on the job at the time
  19. Any details on this yet - especially was it inside or outside? Off there today - half day at work - spring day
  20. Bought my son an Avalanche Max - 20". It needed a part after a while and after a few trips to LBSs and a call to the distributer I was told the part can't be gotten, they don’t have stock and wont get it for me - straight out. So his next bike will something else - probably a Silverback - still good value and parts not problem. I therefore recommend the Felt if their after sales service is good.
  21. Anyone tried the new Mountain X yet? Looks like what I want?
  22. I think these are brilliant for commuting but don't agree that they are good for kids to get to school - at least not here in Pretoria! I used to ride to school here but is simply murder for parents to allow it now. Maybe elsewhere it's still ok? I don't think the taxis will drive better just because there are more kids on the road?
  23. Yep - to be able to combine your addication/passion/sport/hobbie as work would be amazing!
  24. I have wondered a few times what sort of salaries these sorts of jobs, and bike machinics, bike shop salesman etc earn? Not sure if anyone would let us know?
  25. Good to cut down the exotics but not the indigenous ones? Sometimes workers make the odd mistake and chop out something that they should not.
