  1. The (Garmin) techno junkies might be interested in this thread... https://www.bikehub.co.za/forum_posts.asp?TID=16197
  2. Why bother until the local profiteering agent get their act together??? Order direct from USA when it is available there. You save a lot! Ordered my Edge 305 and Legend HCx (which is still not available in SA yet) direct from USA. Got the Legend HCx for mountaineering (needed a colour mapping model to use with my topo maps http://madmappers.com/AfricaTopo/) and the Edge for cycling. Of course now they go and announce the Edge 706 which has functions of those 2 units combined into one (at first glance at least)!
  3. Not a review; But this still seems like the most appropriate forum. (Can't review a product that is not available yet and probably will not review any of these new models soon since I just got my Edge 305 which was ordered before this press release. At least the 305 was cheaper. ) Garmin have just announced 2 new models for their cycling specific Edge range with map capabilities. The top of the range 706 is compatible with some power meters. http://www8.garmin.com/pressroom/outdoor/082907b.html https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=160 mountain_lion2007-08-30 07:37:03
  4. So has anybody tried one of these? Battery type and voltage?
  5. You could contact Presta in Pretoria. They do walking aids, wheelchairs, modified bikes etc. I will PM you with a cell number for someone there.

Well I guess I should have left computers of my list then... Although a computer is just a tool and what I do at home is very different from what I do at work.

Agent did not talk about anything specific, they never do! But it was not difficult to draw up my own list... Progressing well and most of the critical work was done before winter. Slowed down a bit with it being winter and MTB season...

Mountaineering, maps (electronic & paper), GPS, DIY (bought a house last year; agent said it needed a little bit of work...) & computers.
  10. OK, Thanks all. I will just be replacing the chain now. Big chain ring is not causing problems although 2 teeth took a beating. I managed to straighten what is left of them and have been riding like that for a while. Will consider crank set & BB replacement later.
  11. Yip, chain rings do not wear as fast as cassette, but because of my riding style I did go through a few on my previous bike over the years. I am not falling for the Q-ring marketing story! Will not make a difference on my level of riding in any case; my money is better spent elsewhere. My thinking is that the BB must be subject to enormous forces from a 90kg rider. Might be worth it to go for quality there. Unfortunately with cycling components higher price does not always buy "better quality". It might buy lighter weight, but we all know lighter weight is usually traded off against strength and durability. Will speak to my LBS as well and see what they say (and the other expert Hubbers who are still to add their opinions here), but it seems like new big blade and chain is the solution for now. Change BB later when shot.
  12. Oh, and regarding the chain: any specific type / brand to get?
  13. As Dick said: heavy rider, huge power, steep gradients + mud = short DT life. LX was my thinking too. There is nothing wrong with the derailleurs & shifters anyway. Used LX on my previous bike too. No problems. But what about the crank set? I have damaged the big chain ring on a rock. It is still working after I straightened the 2 teeth, but not a good idea to keep using as is. I am not very impressed with the BB (cartridge type) - already has some stiff spots, but will still be good for a while; as you say 850km is not a lot. So do I replace big ring and chain only now and look at crank set when BB is worn? mountain_lion2007-08-07 01:46:00
  14. When I bought my Giant Anthem beginning of the season, budget did not allow the Anthem 1, so I went for the Anthem 2, reasoning that I can upgrade components with time as needed. Well, 850km later the chain is almost 1% worn and I damaged 2 teeth on the big chain ring. (muddy cape winter, doing most of the long route PPA MTB events). Bike came with Race Face Ride XC cranks on Race Face SRX BB. Derailleurs & shifters are Deore LX. So what do I do? Replace chain and big ring and see if cassette is still OK? or replace complete crank set? or replace complete drive train? At 90kg, I exert considerable force on a drive train and am more concerned about durability of my bicycle components than their weight. I ride MTB for fun rather than competition (usually finish middle of the field). Budget is still not unlimited, but I will look at the longer term economics rather than the cheapest quick fix. Thank you for your recommendations! mountain_lion2007-08-06 16:52:27
  15. Thanks for all the replies so far. I also have a park tool chain wear indicator and have also read the previous threads on this topic on the Hub, where most of the same was said. JB - bookmarked your website from a previous thread, but still need to read. I was interested to hear what kind of actual chain life other MTBers where getting. i.e. when you apply all that has been said above, what mileage, which of course may vary, do you get? (puns intended ) I checked my MTB chain after this weekend's Stellenbosch Challenge mud fest - the park tool indicates between 0.75% & 1% wear. The bike has done 850km since new and I was wondering how this compared to what others are getting. Yes, we did have a muddy wet winter in the Cape, I am a heavy rider (90kg) and I always try not to get off my bike on the hills if I can help it. Got to make use of these heavy muscular legs which mostly count against me sometime! From what people say above, 850km sounds like average to good going under the conditions. I like Dick's idea of rotating chain and thereby extending the time that the cluster can mate with a chain. Expect a new thread from me soon asking about drive train replacement...
  16. I know it depends... on type of riding, riding style, rider weight etc, but what would fellow Hubbers consider to be normal expected life (time and/or km) of a well maintained (cleaned & lubed regularly) MTB chain?
  17. No problem finding it using the forum search tool... This what you are looking for? https://www.bikehub.co.za/forum_posts.asp?TID=14202&KW=new+chain+lube&PN=1
  18. The demo downloads are .exe files. Run by double clicking which will start the installer. If you have MapSource installed, the demo will be added as another map product in MapSource. Open MapSource and select the demo map from the drop down list (if it is not selected automaticly). Note that AfricaTopo does not have any roads etc. It is intened for use on a map capable GPS with another map that includes this info. Without roads and towns, orientation can be difficult on the PC.
