  1. The immigration agent I used suggested that I include a statement along the lines of: "I plan to visit some friends and do some sightseeing while evaluating the suitability of New Zealand as a country for me and my family to live in." in my visa application itinerary. That way you make your intensions clear.
  2. I had a crazy fall this morning. I was in the bike lane going straight, motorist passed me on the right and proceeded to turn left. Wet road plus breaking heavily plus swerving and I went over the handlebars, face to the tar. Luckily I could get up and chase down the car in the traffic. She did not see me - 3 flashing rear lights, one flashing front, a safety vest and reflective strips on bike and helmet was not enough. This was my first real incident in almost 2 years of commuting. Got some scars to remind me to always stay alert and not assume they will see you.
  3. Have any of you noticed how much broken glass we have on the streets of Auckland (North Shore)? I commute to work by bicycle on most days and it is ridiculous how much glass there is on the road - mostly beer bottles. They sweep the roads often, but it does not seem to help. The broken glass is the one bad thing that I did not expect. I do not understand why people feel the need to litter.
  4. This cartoon appeared in NZ Herald on Monday after the Christchurch shootings. I agree with it completely. The hate we spew on social media does have consequences.
  5. Did you see the Cartoon in NZ Herald on Monday? I agree with it completely. The hate we spew on social media does have consequences.
  6. Tapiriik - Used to sync between Strava and Endomondo. You can manually sync, or pay the $2 subscription to automatically sync. Mine expired and I could not understand why mt rides did not go to Endomondo.
  7. What do you guys think about a secondary challenge: Number of days commuting or number of commutes? Just to keep it interesting for those of us who do not have a 40km commute? Can Endomondo handle something like that?
  8. PostNet CBD https://www.facebook.com/postnetptacbd We had the completed forms, scanned it and mailed to PostNet. They sorted the rest.
  9. I think 150k in a 5 person household is enough to live quite well, even in Auckland. You won't be buying a house or an expensive car, but won't have to feel like you are missing out on something. That is if the children are in school and you do not have to pay for Kindergarten.
  10. Learnt yesterday that the punctures will find you, no matter what... A piece of wood tore a hole so big that I had to through away the tubeless tyre.
  11. Golden rule - think for everyone else. Glad it wasn't too bad - get better soon!
  12. Our shower was out of action for a while. I found that hanging around outside in the wind until the sweating stopped helped a lot. Sometimes I even did a few very slow laps around the parking lot. Anything else is pointless unless you can stop the sweating.
  13. I found that I had to come here to get interviews and find a job - and even then the employers was sceptical about my commitment to move. I maybe had 2 skype interviews over a 6 month period that came to nothing. Once here it was a lot easier and had a job by the end of the first week.
  14. 16 km (200m climb) per day with some longer detours in summer. Kona Unit SS MTB
  15. https://tapiriik.com is the way to go.
  16. Sjo! When did that happen - Top 10 all over 2400km. Well done!
  17. She wrote it again on 12 May. Still waiting for the results but she does not feel very positive - and that after studying very hard for it. Too little time seems to be the biggest issue.
  18. My wife had to do the academic IELTS for nursing registration, also requiring 7 or higher in every section. She passed well with average above 7, but 6.5 for the writing - so she has to do it all again. Looks like the academic writing is quite difficult.
  19. I spent the week in the hospital with pneumonia. This ends my non-stop commute since November. I don't even know how I will get to work next week and have no idea how long it will take to get back on the bike. My lungs took some bad shots. Any recovery suggestions?
