  1. WOW what an awesome course the 42km Buffet Olives MTB challenge was yesterday, it indeed had a bit of everything and a HELL of a lot of climbing!!! Wish I'd been feeling better (bit of flu) but I enjoyed the ride all the same! Highlights for me: - the climbing (to a point ) - the displays of humour by the organisers at "the sting in the tail" unrideable climb. (They asked if we'd found our Granny yet? Well this was one of those races that I was riding prdominantly ONLY in my granny - all the way!) - the passage under the flyover leading to the tunnel - I was awe struck - the waterpoints and the CRUNCHIES - I want the recipe!!!! - the ST - flowing and fast! - just all round organisation. LOW LIGHT: - That darn 4km climb in the end! If I had passed the race designer on that climb I would have given him a piece of my mind ... all in the spirit of riding and jokingly of course. But that climb HURT LIKE HELL. Thanks Geddan Well done and THANK YOU to the organisers, this is one I will rave about for a long time and will definitely be riding it again next year. Hope the rider who fell and hurt his ribs is OK, it happened in close proximity of me and it was a HARD fall. My time: 03:38 (with flu... next year I aim for 03:15!).
  2. Preparation and (later in the week) self-motivation is key. I can never just recovery ride...DITTO, I've given up on that one it always has to be flat out!!! My legs are always tired / heavy / burning especially climbing stairs at work. Wind can change direction in an instant, and I've become a wind expert to be able to predict rain according to wind direction Sunrises are beautiful - ALWAYS Cycling at dawn is - refreshing The morning sounds of birds / animals is stunning and addictive! The smell of the fresh air is revitalising. Most commuters are friendly - yeah, MOST. The workers on their single speeds ALWAYS give me a run for my money! There's always a race waiting to happen - unless the legs are dead. I arrive home 200% mofe relaxed - DITTO My rear tyre (mtb) gets killed on the tar - DITTO Always have a Plan B available for those unexpected turn of events - my sister works at the same place as I do (she is my Plan B B). People do the oddest things in cars sitting in traffic - for sure. Some motorists are friendly when stopped next to them - others make a point of looking the other way. Only two motorists thus far actually SAID THAT I WAS MAD to be cycling in the cold and dark ... others probably all think it. IT IS SO MUCH FUN to constantly pass work collegues who are stopped at red robots. You pass them, they pass you, you pass them, they pass you, then you get home the same time as they do - BUT YOU'VE at least EXERCISED in that time they've been stressing in traffic! You get idiots on the road - you just have to think for them too. Would you give up commuting to work - I would not change it for the world!
  3. Hi all, <... and just to keep this cycling related> Are there any Mountain/Road cyclists out there who also do a little Motocross'ing (part time) on the weekends in the Western Cape when not out cycling? I bought myself a Yamaha YZ and have a lot of fun on it, but I'm sure one could have MORE fun in a group of like minded peers. At the moment I ride in and around the Krftn Sport fields, and have heard of Dirt 'n Dust in Phisantekraal ... But are there any farmers allowing some riding on their lands in Bottelary koppies - I know the Renoster Veld Conservancy said a BIG NO which is understandable and I respect that, but they mentioned that there is a farmer who allows it on his land (through which the MTB trails currently do not run) and if one could ask permission ... ??? Anybody know who he is? (PS: I wil not break any rules and will never ride where not allowed, as I too am a MTB'er and appreciate the trails and hard work that goes into mainting it, hence the post to find adequate and legal spots.) Thanks
  4. They offered me a glass of Game and that made everything ok ... they thought I was anemic too Sleeping HR = 36 RHR = 54 MHR = 187 (not yet proven ) Age 37
  5. Vir die DC, kry eder vir jou twee wat jy gelyk kan dra - dis lank sit - haha.
  6. Reg Lizzard stated that "So I send the HR sensor and wearlink strap to Polar and the replace everything under guarantee." and this I did not see as including the Polar watch battery itself, so I mentioned it as I know I had the same issues and the new battery resolved the problem. If it helps then great. If not, at least you have a new batery in your watch )
  7. When last did you replace the battery in the POLAR S720i watch, mine did the same and I replaced the Polar watch's battery when they were here for the Two Oceans. Problem solved.
  8. Guess what??? I just got a special delivery ... and its VERY SNAZZY!!! Thanks Matt (from the Admin team) the new "The Hub" cycling kit looks awesome, I can't wait to try it out on the tour up to Knysna. The extra effort on your part, in getting it to me ASAP and in time for my tour, is much appreciated!
  9. Thanks for the advice guys (and Mackie thanks for having my back, well said )
  10. After eating a lot of sand (and some other foreign objects) and swallowing quite a bit of water coming from my OWN front wheel when out cycling in the rain I would like to know if .... fitting MTB Mud guards (front and/or back) to my Merida Matts 1000 would receive a or a VERY BIG . One can still duck and dive the spray coming off a fellow cyclists' wheel by riding slightly to the left or right of his/her wheel. BUT cycling with your body and head in a slanted position to your hands (as if being pulled to the side with hands still on handlebars) is ridiculous and that in order to duck and dive the spray from your own wheel.
  11. Just a quick question: Can someone PLEASE provide me with a reason why it always happens that when I stop training for a much needed break after +- 5-6 months of constant cycling (5-6 days a week) I ALWAYS come down with a cold/flu? I usually at most take the odd two days break here or there otherwise the normal one day a week off, but when opting for a much needed 7 day break, starting the previous week Thursday before the cycling tour from bellville to Knysna at the end of June, the flu hit me like clock work starting on day 3 and escalating by day 4! It has now been 3 days normal rest, 2 days sick'ish and 6 days sick like hell with still no bum on bike . 11 days total, and counting... So why does one need to rest again? To get ill? Thanks
  12. Private numbers are a bonus
  13. Phone the cell number and the guy actually answers (i almost fell off my chair as I expected voicemail so I had to chat to him), he wants to know when i'm going to pay the money, he says he spoke to me yesterday and emailed me but I never replied apparently. (Dont recall that though). I said I'll pay in about half an hour's time, so he asked if I had his bank details. I said he sent it yesterday, and he stated that if i am not happy with the bike when it arrives he will gladly pay my money back. So what about all the other guys who called and emailed and he said the same thing tooooooo???
  14. This begs the question .... how many have unknowingly paid for this bike already? Phone the cell nmber, haha, the guy says he spoke to me yesterday and sent me an email but I never replied. He did? Oh just by the way, the bike is still available for those interested, just remember to pay first - he says you can get your money back if not happy with the bike when it arrives. Ok. Uhh, no thanks!
  15. If ANYBODY finds a comfortable position which does not yield dead or burning sensation in feet PLEASE DO LET ME KNOW I'll be reading .... I think I should move mine back though, after getting on my road bike for the first time in a long time I've noticed my cleats are further back than with the new (later obtained) MTB shoes. Keep pedaling ...
  16. Great thanks for the reply! Feel better about paying the R180.00 now again and would'nt swap my Polar for any other product
  17. Hi guys No rant nor rave, just a simple question or two? How long does your Polar Wearlink strap last? I am at that point where it seems I have to replace mine (again) after +- 1 yr, perhaps a little more 1 yr 6 months maybe. I always take good care of it, not bending the critical transmitting electrode sections unnecessarily, rinsing it in cold water after every use etc. etc. Is this life span normal, or is there something more one can do to lengthen it? Where is the best place (in WC) to buy a new one?
  18. Thank you and that is exactly why I asked for everyones honest opinions so that I could set my mind at ease as to what to do from now on. My 3 dogs are runners / pullers / extremely strong and so energetic. Ages: a 1 year old fox terrier / jack russel mix, a 2 year old Staffie (pure muscle!!!) and a 7 year old large poodle (LUCKY is his name, and HE was the one with me last night when it happened - co-oncidence?). Taking them for a walk (and bear in mind I am alone) on a leash is non-existent, I am the one that ends up exhausted with arms and shoulders practically pulled out of its sockets at the end of the walk, and they look at me as if to say "was that the walk, we're not even tired yet". Hence the Springer dog exerciser, it seemed like a fantastic idea and works like a bomb. For a change THEY are exhausted and not me! The pictures on the site are misleading though and make the bike / dog combo look a lot wider than it is. Yes on the roads it is extremely dangerous, and I realised that last night. But could it not perhaps only have been one silly woman's error of judgement? BUT I do not really want to take that chance again, and will do all in my power to avoid the roads but in our circumstances and environments that is just not completely possible. I will stick to the quiet Sportsground roads, and out of peak traffic times - non-negotiable! Regarding their paws, they do run on the pavement / grass as far as possible while I cycle on road / edge of the gutter section but that specific piece of road does not have grass rather only thorns and sand and that would be more harmful. Unfortunately I had/have no choice but to use that small 500m stretch of road in Darwin to enter / exit my complex so I'll have to see what I can do there. But thank you to all for the comments, and be safe out there - I am now one of those who got hit/clipped by a car and will be ever more so cautious and suspicious of all drivers. Have a good weekend.
  19. Yeah, I'm avoiding peak hours like the plaque from now on, pity, cause i like to get everything done and then get stuck into the feeding and looking after the many animals I have at home. But yes, quiet area's and fields from now on, unfortunately the sea side will not do it for me as I stay 40km's from any beach and would not be practical to travel there 3/4 times per week! I don't know if you REALLY want to make the rope longer especially with a "nutter" and on MTB technical trails ... it may just lead to more chaos than you'd like . The shorter the rope the more control over there movements.
  20. Good girl, but thanks all the same! Appreciate it, my dogs are my life!
  21. The spring in the device absorbs ALL the jerks and pulls of the dog - I have experienced it already. But hear what you're saying ... thanks
  22. There I was minding my own business yesterday in Dan King street Kraaifontein opposite the canal turn off @17h50, cycling with my dog (on the Springer Bicycle Dog exerciser) and taking up NOT EVEN a metre of space in the road with him running in the gutter when suddenly from behind, I hear a loud bang and simultaneously feel a hard thump on my hip/glute. Before I realised what was happening, the bottom half of my body was flung in the same direction as my seat which was now pointing 90degrees to the left, my upper half was leaning on the car which I had then realised had hit me, and all I could think of was my dog and if he was ok! The driver drove on for the length of three lamp posts to the stop street and I initially thought she was not going to stop. So ending up in the middle of the road leaning over my bike I could think of nothing else but to memorise the number plate, still not knowing how on earth I managed to land on my feet - clip-on’s and all. At the Stop street this elder gentleman gets out of the front passenger side of the car and what does he do? YES. He checks the car for damage, he looks at the mirror - the (at that time) OBVIOUS point of impact and puts that back in its place as it was distorted and folded in, he then continues to check the side of the car for further damage (Bugger the cyclist who is cringing with quite some pain and discomfort in the middle of the road)! He later comes over and asks if I am ok, and by that time an elder lady gets out of the right back passenger seat and comes over to me and this is the dialogue that follows: Lady: What are you doing? Me: What do you mean what am I doing – you guys hit me! Lady: You were doing this in the road (~making some kind of swerving motion with her hands~)! Me: Don’t talk nonsense, I was just cycling here in as little space as I have to do so and you guys hit me from behind! Lady: NO! You were doing this (~making that SAME kind of swerving motion with her hands~) I was watching you all the time! (Take note, this lady, sitting in the back right hand seat of the car, was watching me all the time! She must have had x-ray vision to be able to see through the child in the child seat at the left back seat as well as through her presumed husband sitting in the front left seat approaching me from behind, to have been able to be watching me all the time.) Me: Lady I was just cycling here and you guys hit me from behind! (Getting a bit frustrated now with this nosy woman who is not even the driver and who is giving me quite some lip! But, the words that came of her mouth next sums it all up!) Lady: But what are you doing in the road??? Me: What do you mean, what am I doing in the road– I am cycling in the road! Where do expect me to cycle on the pavement? You guys are driving in a car; do I expect you to drive on the pavements? I have as much right as you to be on the road! Lady: Why don’t you walk your dog on a leash? Me: (~Pointing over to the short rope attached to the Springer Dog Exerciser I say~) He is on a leash look here, do you see this? This is a tested device and he may walk/run with me on this we do not take up that much space. Lady: You should not be on the road! Me: Listen lady what do you mean? I may be on the road, how can you tell me that, are you mad or something? (~And that must have hit a nerve as she went off on me about me not knowing her and how could I call her mad, I don’t know her etc. etc. She repeated that three times if not more? I recall asking if she was mad, not saying she is but in any case … she totally flipped.) I just told her that I do not want to speak to her I want to speak to the driver who still had NOT gotten out of the car, and told her that I had taken their number plate and was going to report this to the police. She turned around and went to sit in the car, and with this the driver FINALLY got out with her cell phone. By this time I was on the pavement already and she was taking photo’s, what of, I don’t know. So I said to her that this all would have been acceptable if she had gotten out in the first place and come to chat to me being the driver and all, I said I understand that it was an accident and it happens but instead that woman came out shouting and screaming at me and talking nonsense! Well, she said she wanted to get out but had a child in the car, she apologised for her mother’s behaviour and said she (her mother) got a fright, to which I answered oh so she got a fright but she was not the one who was hit by the car. She apologised again so I said that that was all fine and well but that I will have to report this to the police in any case. So we all left, they drove off and I limped the 400m to my house with my dog next to me quite oblivious to what had just happened. MY THOUGHTS on WHY I consider myself one of the lucky ones: - in 7 years of cycling, this was the first physical contact with a moving car a lot of close calls previously but nothing more than that till now. - they were only driving at about 35-40km/h when they hit me. - I was hit with a part of the car which gives way under force – the mirror, - I limped away, with a numb bum (glute / hip and, - my dog was ok, so … it could have been worse. I shudder to think what could have been if any of the above were different! LESSONS LEARNT: - Although I was cycling with my dog in a road wide enough for two cars to pass each other with enough space for a bicycle and a dog <1m in width (cars park at the blue bulls shop half in the road / half on the pavement and two cars pass each other simultaneously, not with that much ease but they can do so so the road is wide enough for a bicycle) I will not take my dogs for a run on the Springer Bicycle Dog exerciser again in “peak” traffic. - Never EVER ask an elder lady, who had just gotten a huge fright when someone else was knocked down by a car, if she is MAD. Unfortunately though I have NO CHOICE but to use Dan King to enter / exit my complex when going anywhere. I do however always make a point of it to take my dogs up the road leading to the Sport fields and back for their 4km (there and back) run on the exerciser. The Springer Bicycle Dog exerciser is a new arrival in SA and seen at the Argus expo I bought one to help me exercise my extremely fit and energetic dogs (take a look at the website for pictures, my dogs run right next to the spring device as my rope is shorter than those in the pictures on the web: http://www.springeramerica.com). I do not feel that just because it is new and people do not know it they have the right to tell me I should walk my dogs on the pavement. That being said as stated I will however chose my times of exercising them more cautiously in future, but avoiding roads all together is just not possible! Your thoughts on this are most welcome!
