  1. A week & 1 day to go!! Looks like my riding partner with a knee ailment is biting the bullet (having intensive physio - seems to be helping) and we still holding onto our 1st Trans Baviaans dream In the event of him starting the race and his knee hampering him from continuing say after 100km,, what happens? I believe it is a case of me having to team up with someone else? Anyone had experience with this kinda thing happening?? See long term weather forecast not looking too bad for next week.....
  2. Personal message sent....
  3. Thanks for the reply Now it seems like the curve ball has really got a spin on it!! My standby rider is no longer available........my 1st Trans B is in danger of being a pipe dream I cant seem to find another rider......
  4. Can anybody tell me if a substitution rider is allowed. My ride partner may have to pull out due to injury....we are in a two man team....and I have a stand by rider who is prepared to go in his place..... Sent Ecobound message but awaiting reply..... Every now and then life throws you a curve ball.....I guess what you do with it....is what matters
  5. Eish!! Do we Baviaan's virgins have something to worry about....
  6. I've just come out of a week & half of flu & wild coughing...antibiotics klaar!! ...slowly eased back into the revolution of my spinning bike pedal stoke last nite. Praying for no relapse!! Still sniffles & slight "wet cough....but Bavs is around the corner now!! Being the first TB, all the training & effort up to now, then the flu, more wet weather....flippin cold again!!, reading all the reports on the forum here,,,, I guess right now my modus op is now to stop stressing, Traditional Bavs or Langs Bav?, niggling flu bug, this that.....and just go for a finish! ...
  7. ....Any experienced Trans BAviaaners with tips & advice on what to be packing into each container as far as gear is concerned.. Just dunno which container to shove lights into?....Dunno if we gonna have a divert route again this year or not? Wonder when the organisers will tell us!! Three weeks to go!!!!
  8. At the rate the weather is forecasting, looks like we are going to need more than just sealskinz More rain & snow....
  9. The weather has been rather hectic over the past week!! Hoping things are going to really chill between now and then and that the Bav Kloof will start drying out. Really don't wanna do a detour! ... Apparently everything was looking good about 2 weeks back, roads and all. I can only imagine now!....Guess all part of the....um.....fun!
  10. Anyone have some advice or recommendations on helmet/head-mount cameras? I am looking at obtaining one but not really wanting to splashout. Just something basic with good battery life and good graphics.... Any advice?
  11. At the rate the weather is playing out, it might just be a detour TB this year.... anyone have a Garmin map of the Trans Baviaans tour map?....
  12. Thks Andre T.....took the plunge and did the conversion! with proper tubeless tyres... had them done a few hours ago.....sealed nicely....air holding tight!.....slight test run done.....and still holding.....will see how they go over the longer distance.... thks again for the info offered
  13. Any suggestions on a warm riding jacket for the Trans Baviaans? .....
  14. Thks for the reply...much appreciated... "It will however never be UST because of the rim bead."....Tell me more? I run Maxxis Crossmarks with tubes and if I can convert would like to use the same brand....? Just gets a little confusing for me sometimes,,all this conversion talk....what, when, how etc.... but would really like to go the tubeless route.....should have thought about it before I bought the Easton EA70XC 26'......
  15. Can a conversion be done on my Easton EA70 XC clinchers to tubeless? Some say it can be done, some say not?
  16. Last year was a detour route I hear. I guess that is where most of the river crossings came in that is spoken about. What about the official Trans Baviaans Route? are there that many crossings as well? I believe there is a map that will be available to upload. Wondering if this would be able to be uploaded to my GArmin Edge??
  17. Riding kit. The basics are bib shorts and ride top. Any advice or recommendation on good/warm ride jackets to keep you dry and warm? First Ascent has some good jackets, but there again I am shopping around for something better than I currently use...??
  18. 29er or 26er for the Trans Baviaans??
  19. My mate & I are using the Magicshine 1000 lumen. Awesome light! I am sure there will be debate on what what and what not. Trans Baviaans they say some fast descents to be done and in the dark, I will swear by my Magic Shine! Its like a car light, yet runs off a battery pack. Tried & tested on our night rides. 3hrs on full beam, roughly 5hrs on dim (which is also bright!) We each bought an extra battery pack. These lights definately show you the nooks & crannies out in the dark. With two on...(my ride partner & I riding together) its like day light!!.... Good luck with the selection....
  20. Just as some insight, what does the average TB rider carry with him? Obviously spares in that being puncture repair, etc. Whats with the emergency kit? Just basic small stuff? 1st aid kit - is it one per person? I believe they check all this stuff. No show, no go??....
  21. Cannot thank all of you guys enough for the tips, advice and shared experiences. It is freakin fantastic and really appreciate it. Reading some of the advice and all is reassuring especially when having thought some of the same ideas not knowing if it would be practical or not...you guys are putting allot into perspective for us...you guys rock! thanks...
  22. Awesome! So there are goin to be a couple of river crossings! not just one or two... All the advice is great!....one doesn't know if u should get more excited or more nervous Thanks for the tips!
  23. Thanks for the advice. We are riding with Magicshine 1000 lumen and some of the terrain is pretty rough out here in the eastern cape mountains. Nutrition is something we are working on. Little bit different to doing a 110km road classic! Never the less, your advice is much appreciated. We will take all the advice we can get
  24. Azonic! Hell, thanks for the insight. This is what I want to hear; especially from the guys that have done this stuff! Much appreciated! The info on the boxes for checkpoints is interesting. Great to have some tips here! Thanks again!
  25. On average 200ks plus a week at the moment... night ride in week, day ride on weekend...
