  4. Tubed! A big thank you for all your posts and the support that was generated and came with it whilst I was out on the trail. Being on the back foot from start day wasn't the way I envisaged the master plan of things on my first Freedom Challenge. Fanie & I, having never met until the night before and on the 1st day on the trail, became the best of friends. What a super guy! Freedom, even though it only lasted 11 days, for me was an experience that will stay with me for a lifetime! With the mishaps, crash and the downsides that occurred, I was increasingly amazed at what the human body can do when the mind wills the body on and commands it to do what you want it to do. Obviously with the help of pain meds from time to time - (advice to others; not always a good thing) Yet, we are not mechanical machines and somewhere, somehow something was bound to give. Pushing drive-side crank 60/70% of the time trying to relieve the pressure off the left knee on the drive-assist side, had to run out of 'piston pressure eventually. I knew deep down this would be inevitable and was just a matter of time before luck ran out. That time came en-route to Chesney Wold. Having seen the specialist back home, 6 weeks of rehab and physio and then we are hopefully good to go! So glad I managed to push to Rhodes even though it was 5 days too late for me, the Freedom trail beckons and if all goes well, 2015, I will be back on the start line. Valuable experiences gained over 11 days, some of the most amazing and incredible people met. (Stu Brew to mention one! Fantastic human being!!) I experienced humility like no other and have no regrets. Grateful I live to tell the stories and still have the opportunities for now to go back and fight another day. So! for now! here's to 2015! Big congrats to all the finishers so far and thoses coming through! Big respect and thank you for keeping the fire burning within for thoses of us that experienced misfortunes along the way... Thank you.
  5. Trackz! Your dedication on makingtrackz.wordpress.com : "Adventure is selfish full stop. It takes a very special family to allow one the freedom to pursue our dreams. I have such a family". You hit home man! - It made me realize again just how much I have so much to be grateful for!
  6. Tubed! Your 2013 Freedom Challenge forum was epic!! And YES! I am doing it for the first time this year! Thanks to you and all for the inspiration! 4 days to go! 2014 RASA - bring it on!
  7. Thks V12man!
  8. Anyone know where I can get a bike light mount(clamp) to replace the o-ring type clamp? Online, no one seems to have stock. For MJ type lights. Thanks
  9. Front wheel is a thru axle, rear wheel is normal quick release skewer. Hubs are Hope2 hubs on ZTR Arch EX.... Just strange that I have used the wheels before and no prob. I will acquire a new skewer and see if that helps??
  10. Axle slips into the hangers smoothly, no problem there....
  11. I am a tad confused. I have a set of 29er Syncross MTB wheels on my MTB. When I replace the wheelset and put on my Stans Arch EX my rear QR skewer doesn't want to lock the wheel in place. You can turn the end nut of the axle until it bites onto the hanger and when you apply the lever clamp on the other side it is really tight but no tension on the axle itself.... dunno if I am explaining right? Basically the axle does not want to lock the wheel in place securely with the fear it may just fall out. Surely you cannot apply so much pressure that you battle to release the clamp? Is the spring load damaged in the clamp head perhaps?
  12. 1st the discovery by chance on the net in 2009; then the dream; now the reality! Freedom Challenge RASA 2014 just around the corner and my journey into some of the unknown will begin. Endless days and nights of gear researching, map studies, endless training miles, sacrifices and a support network to cushion the anticipation that keeps building. Everything paid with the final smalls to be taken care of wondering what it will be like on the start line in June of which only d-day will tell. People ask why the heck would someone want to do something like this. As some of us like minded bike riders would say; it cannot be fully explained and unless you indulge in the same experiences of riding and racing a bicycle, only then can you start to try understand the reasons why. The Freedom Challenge race across South Africa, I am doing it because it has been a dream. It is an opportunity to transverse part of our country very few will have the privilege of doing. It is an opportunity to revel in and experience another side of humanity that I am informed about. It is an opportunity to dig deep into my character and push the boundaries of the human spirit and how far we can go and how much we can endure. It is an opportunity to write my own story and define my own history. At the same time it includes all those that have been part of and will be part of, this incredible journey that I will embark on. Most importantly, this is also a journey to hopefully help some deaf kids that could do with a better start in life of which I am trying to raise money for. The theme is me doing the Freedom Challenge, the real story is these kids. If anyone would like to sponsor me or make a small donation, every little bit helps towards making a difference. https://www.facebook.com/freedomchallenge2014
  13. Fundraising is hard work Marnitz....I am battling with my own as well...giving deaf kids a better chance while I do all the hard work doing FC!.... Just have to keep pushing it, persevere....keep at it! COME ON GUYS & GIRLS!! help the man out here! Marnitz is a seasoned Freedom Challenger....I am sure he will not disappoint!
  14. Marnitz! You make Freedom Challenge sound like a walk in the park! I'm not nervous just yet...we await the start line though! Tell us more about your charity.....
  15. Thanks Marnitz! I am really looking forward to this thing! even though I will only know what I'm in for once I'm in it! Nervous but sure when on the start line I will be bek@#king myself.... lol!
  16. Thks for this fanievb. All that you said here has confirmed somewhat what I was thinking..... appreciate it!
  17. I acquired a new set of ZTR Arch Ex wheelsets. They run Stans No Tube. I had proper tubeless (LUST) tyres fitted by LBS and have had them for 2 weeks , not ridden yet. The problem is first it was the rear wheel then the front wheel that went flat over 4/5 days.???? Wheels were rotated daily. Really frustrating!! never had problems with any other fittings of tubeless over the past 2 years. The question on observation is this: Okay the LBS went and used Joe's No-Flats tubeless kit. (I only use Stans) The second thing is that I notice the rubber rim band protrudes over the lip of the rims on both sides once the tyre is fitted by +/- 3mm either side? Is this right? (never seen this before) (Should the tyre beading not have any obstruction between the tyre bead and the beading seat on the rim? I do not see any signs of sealant spillage or leakages on the rim or via spokes. Be interesting to get some feedback.
  18. Thanks all you guys for your input!! Always valuable! I settled for a set of ZTR Arch EX with Hope 2 hubs...will be testing them out in the coming weeks. I have ridden a set of Syncros XR 2.5 29er and the 7000km I have put onto them went down without any glitches. Only recently have I been riding these with the extra weight of the back pack etc. Will be good to see how the ZTR's will shape.
  19. Nope....nothing broken or lost....just wanted to have a spare after taking delivery of a new set of wheels....BUT...if the price is as is....doesn't justify the means.....will just use the old one....
  20. Fox. I realize, no real demands on the item, so that what is lying around can be just about any price. Best price I have got is R930!!! Wonder if will get some hash to put in the pipe to smoke it before using it!! I don't do drugs, this might be the first time! Geesh!! talk about expensive!! moer!
  21. Well Droo! ... inbox me a price... I don't have stress levels! LOL!
  22. Anyone know where I can get a 15mm QR axle? .....
  23. Thanks for all your replies guys. Was looking at Easton EA90XC 29er but after doing some research it would seem the flavour definately swings towards the Stan's ZTR Arch....
  24. What would be the best wheelset for a race like the Freedom Challenge RASA?
  25. The joys of living in a small town...... I am looking for a hybrid mtb shoes that are robust, lightweight and can take punishment....in wet and dry conditions. Just cannot seem to find an online shop in SA that sells.....all overseas stuff. Its for cross country extreme biking and some hiking.....so need to also have a durable flexible sole.... Any advice out there... thanks....
