  1. Very useful analysis, thank you very much. You mentioned some factors I did not even consider.

    Both 20'' .....obviously ....  :whistling:

    Gearing :

    Titan 1x6

Signal ... conflicting information on their webpage .... seems the 1x7 is the correct figure, though the spec sheet claims 1x10

    Gear shifting :

both grip shifts ...

The grip shifts gets sticky and the kids struggle with it .... that said, their hands are too small to operate trigger shifts ... they can shift down, but the long stroke of the up shift is difficult for them.

(again the Signal website is conflicting, stating trigger shifts, but the photos shows grip shifts)

    Both V-brakes ...

Both SR Suntour front suspension.  Only usefull if they are going to really do trails.  For everything else the dead weight weighs them down ....  :whistling:   That said, we got use out of the same fork when Maritz rode his 20'' .... dont think there is one answer that works for everybody on this ....

Standover height .... photos may be misleading .... but it appears the standover height of the Titan is marginally lower .... best your kid stands over both

Seriously impressed with the Titan brand, having seen how much abuse they take at the SPUR MTB events and on the trails.

all facts aside .... most likely your kid will outgrow the bike in less than 18 months ..... get the one they "like" the most .....

  2. I'm in the market for a 20'' bike for my daughter. I have taken note of all of the above, but am still just interested in a bike that she will enjoy and gain confidence. Nothing extreme and none of those expensive brands.

Any recommendation where I should start looking? I am based in Centurion.

  3. As a matter of interest in a court case in SA a short while back, I don't recall the exact details but the court ruled the party concerned could not trademark or patent common use words or phrases as they belonged to the public domaine, the company concerned were trying to patent a common phrase of sorts.

True, but it must be noted that trade marks is class specific and obviously should not be descriptive. So, hypothetically speaking, one would not be able to obtain a trade mark registration for 'Apple' for your fruit shop (its descriptive) but for your computer shop it's a different story (not descriptive of your goods)

  4. Yep - but why wait at least 4 years until complaining? I heard (not verifiable, unfortunately) that NeilPryde have been using the name for much longer...

    Also valid :-)

I do however not know why wait so long. There may be endless reasons. Foreign IP law is somewhat different, I am still looking for a more detailed article on this. Anyone?

  5. I saw someone dry fire a bow once. I nearly shat myself, and it wasn't even my bow!

what happens to the bow when you dry fire it and can an expert see the 'damage' on inspection afterwards?

  6. your best bet is then to go into a shop and chat to the salesman, ask as many questions as you can think off. Leave the shop and go to another and ask as many questions as you can, leave that and go and ask at another one. This will give you a good idea of what is available new in your price range. Then make up your mind.

However, what hardtail do you have at the moment? What is wrong with it that you want to upgrade ?

Thanks, seems the best idea, it's not really a matter of upgrading - since I have been doing more road, but I have a VERY old Trek rigid fork etc, so no, I do not have any reference point

  7. Thanks, forgot to mention, i'm set on hard-tail 26, my mind tells me its cheaper to maintain and i can get better spec for by $$

I am not aiming to do big MTB races, I prefer road races, but I do want a MTB to do groenkloof, weekend aways, odd shorter races, mtb with friends and wife.

As much as I would like to fiddle around, I just do not have the time.

And regarding second hand, I do not know enough to make a call on used parts just to learn later that I now have to buy a new crank etc.

    Hope that makes sense.

    Thanks for the help

  8. Looks like this topic fell off the map, so I am sort of hi-jacking it for the moment.

I am also in the market to buy a MTB, most probably new. Budget not more than R7500-R8000

So I am browsing specials etc. but what I would like to know is a few of the technical things, such as:

What are the most important components to look at, e.g. is it better to go for the bike with the better brakes or shocks etc.

Then, it would be nice to know the order of quality of components such as Shimano and SRAM.

With regards to brakes, what is OK?

Please help, I am in the dark here.
