Just to add my 2c worth. It often depends on the tubing used on the Hansom. From Reynolds 501 and upwards the geometry tends to be more race orientated and the clearances less for wider tires, especially if you own a frame that was custom made for a client.

The cheaper tubing like 025 can often accommodate up to 32C tires.

This helps, thank you. How do I find out where on the scale this frame fits in? Can I send you a pic?

  2. Hi, I am still busy with my single speed commuter project and I need to consider tire options. I don't have old road tire lying around so I am looking at buying a basic set of road tires.

My thinking is to rather go with a wider tire for commuting. Does anyone know what is the widest I can go on a steel Hansom road frame?

  3. Thank you all, I have also contacted Cape Coffee Beans and apparently Hario do not ship replacement parts. Another supplier is currently looking for me. I have also read that some mason type jars may have the same neck size and thread. The search for anything that will fit, continues.

This is a close up of what we did with the downtube shifter bosses. The idea was to round them off so as to leave no sharp jagged edges. The shiny polished aluminium seems to "disappear" between the other equally shiny parts.

Does anyone know where I can get either downtube shifter boss covers or downtube shifter boss stops that I can convert as above?

I'm not sure how steep the hills are around there but here round Joburg I manage ok with a 42x20 ... look you not gonna be doing 30k average speeds but you should get up the hills

Thank you, I would prefer a comfortable slower ride where I can manage the hills. At the moment I am not looking at high speeds.

    Hi guys,

    Thanks for your input!

I came right yesterday on my first road bike.

2016 Silverback Strela Comp, nice condition, Sora group set, nearly new Conti tires, think its a descent start for 5k ????

Now, stupid question about fitting, i am 175cm height and 80cm inseam, the recommended size for me is 54cm, the bike is a 54cm.

The seat as you see in the pic is where i fit +-, the handle bars seem high as compared to all the cool/epic/pro pics I see on the interwebs (where the seat seems to be 10cm higher than the bars).

Ill try take an other pic with me on it.

Am i being stupid? who cares? is it because of the angled stem? bike too big for me? should I shut up and go ride?

    Thanks!

Very nice! Wishing you many happy rides (and no flats).

  7. So sorry for your loss.

I experienced a similar misfortune earlier this year where two MTB's were taken from my garage in Centurion. Definitely specifically targeted the bikes.

I have also since been battling with the question as to where all the stolen bikes go to. At this rate, every second commuter in our neighboring countries is riding a top-end bike.

Question: if so, how do you guys secure (lock) your bikes in the garage?

  8. Alright, so I am looking at the classifieds on a daily basis hoping that the right one will just jump out at me. So, today's alerts revealed a few MTB's in my opinion worthy of looking into.

But now my question(s): what is of more (and less) importance when looking at second hand bikes?

A few pointers will be greatly appreciated.

Let's look at these for example:

  9. Revisiting this thread wondering whether CPT MTBer managed to get a MTB?

    Hi All

Can anyone give me some reviews or personal opinions on this bike ?

Will be using it for trail rides maybe once a week. Nothing serious .

i have been browsing bikehub, gumtree and facebook market place since December but decided that i would rather buy something new. Also dont want to buy something too entry level as i have seen many posts here saying that the cheaper bikes gives endless problems and arent reliable when doing off road cycling .

Are there other bikes in this price range that i should consider ? Budget is R14k .

Also considering the Talon 1 but currently no stock . Stock levels of the entry level bikes seems low all over .

    thanks

  10. You can get a lot of 2nd hand bike for that budget

I was in the same boat awhile ago.  I found that the new price wasn't the walk away price, as there was always the "oh, you want to go tubeless? Its tubeless ready but you need to do ABC. Thats an extra kaching kaching". "Oh, the stock tyres are rubbish, you want to go tubeless with these tyres instead, its an extra kaching kaching". "These stock pedals are junk as well, rather get these flats instead, kaching kaching"

So the budget went from (an example) R15k to an actual R10k bike with 3k to 4k accessories. I left 1k in the budget for a helmet. Thats not a 15k ride sadly.

I also found lack of stock everywhere and I called/visited just about every bike shop in the greater gauteng

I was guided with some great advice for the 2nd hand route and I set up a list up of what I wanted - the frame size, the components (this was an important factor to me on the good advice). I ended up looking at around 10 different bikes and settled on a frame that I am more than happy with. Plus, it was already set up with tubeless, flats etc.

Ok, granted I did service it just after purchase, but this was factored into the budget anyway. I think I ended up with a much better valued ride than an out of the box machine.

The point is, dont be shy to look arond at the 2nd hand markets. Be patient and the right ride will pop up. Set up the alerts to automaticlaly keep you posted and browse the classifieds daily and multiple times daily as occasionally ad's get snapped up quickly.

If its in a different area to you, call a friend in that area to go have a booger look see to give you feed back, or I'm sure some hubbers can help out if needed.

You have an itch in the pocket - I get that, but dont rush as good deals pop up all the time.

Great advice, thank you. I will definitely keep my eyes and ears open.

I do not mind going that route at all. I just don't want to end up buying someone else's problems. Also, being relatively new to mountain biking, there is a lot of uncertainty.

  11. So nice to see the positive feedback regarding relatively entry level bikes and components. I am in exactly the same spot (predicament) as the OP! Wanting to buy something for weekend fun at around that budget. Stock levels seem very low. Where else to look. I was thinking local brands would have more stock but alas.
