  2. If you've reached your personal internal equilibrium, your 'natural state' as it were, then you won't drop further weight by diet alone. If your genes aren't programmed for you to have a permanent sick-pack then that's how it's going to be unless you use training to take it to the next level. But it should never, ever be about eating less. My view is that a lot of people have unrealistic expectations of themselves sometimes. They expect that if they eat well and live well then they should have single-digit fat percentages and athletic builds. Only a very small percentage of the population have these gifted genes. I believe it's about accepting ourselves for who we are - we have to learn to love the bodies we were born with. If sports or physical fitness is a chore then that's where you are, and you ain't going further. For the rest of us, it takes a little extra work to get that 'beautiful body'. But it's about being more active, eating less should never be the path to follow. If you do want to look more athletic then live a more athletic lifestyle - i.e. be more active. If you want to be an athlete, then train to be an athlete. To the best of your natural ability - wherever that will take you. Being a healthy athlete should generally mean that you have lower body fat and a better muscular physique than your identical twin who is a healthy sedentary person. That's just common sense that we all know. The human body thrives on physical activity. And it declines far quicker if it lives a sedentary life. Our genetic makeup literally begs for physical activity. It's amazing how quickly we respond (positively) to a bit of good old exercise. First get the diet right (without eating less - just eat more of the good stuff). If you are sedentary and you are at a stable weight that just means you're in a state of natural equilibrium. Start training properly and you'll soon find yourself a new (better) equilibrium. If you stop training, you inevitably return to your old equilibrium. Trying to stop that from happening by eating less is not going to help though. It's just up to us which equilibrium we want to stay at...
  3. When I'm training I find it easier to lose weight. When I'm not training I simply can't lose weight - no matter how strict I go. I know that this goes against the dogma of LCHF, which says it's all about your diet and that exercise is incidental. But it's a very simple equation for me: to lose weight, I must train. Edit: Tracey, so what I mean in a roundabout way is if your diet is sorted, if you are like me, once you start building up your training again you should start to see results.
  4. Guess I've answered my own question after reading this thread. I run 1.75" Conti Travel Contacts on ZTR Crest rims - currently tubed. After reading that thread I'll go ahead and make them tubeless then.
  5. Any recommendations for good tubeless commuter tyres (26")? I'm referring to 1.5" and narrower. E.g. do the Shwalbe Marathons work as tubeless tyres?
  6. Did you get sorted out, Jaco? I'm guessing you'll go with this one (XT M781 conventional front mech)? Unless, like johanpre44 says, this high clamp will interfere with your bottle cages mounts. If you don't post a pic of your seat tube and bottle cage mounts, we won't really be able to see if this is going to be a mistake or not...

You can have 12 Castle Lights on a day the Springboks are playing and still be way below a 50g daily carb limit... as long as you stick to meat only at the braai and leave all the other carbs off the plate... and have a designated driver to drive you home! Compare that to 14g carbs in a Windhoek Lager. Just 4 beers and you've probably hit your carb cap for the day.... [2.5 years since I dropped booze from my life, and loving it]

  9. The bad breath is called 'keto breath'. Linked to 'keto urine '. It’s all part of being deep in ketosis, and nothing to do with traditional 'bad breath'. When you are burning ketones, one type of ketone - called acetone - tends to be excreted, both in the urine and the breath. This is the 'bad smell' coming from your breath and your urine.

  12. Jaco, maybe take a pic of the frame. Do you know what diameter your seat tube is? And tell us where the gear cable runs down the frame. That will determine if it's a top pull or bottom pull derailleur.
  13. Ja, in the early days of LCHF flaxseed was seen as a great source of omega-3's. But has since been shown that it's a poorer version of o-3 when compared to fish oils. And the whole rancid issue. Which really kills it.

  16. Regarding this whole omega-6 / omega-3 ratio thing, I just want to highlight a passage from one of the Chris Kresser articles I posted a couple of pages back. "... omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids compete for the same conversion enzymes. "Several studies have shown that the biological availability and activity of n-6 fatty acids are inversely related to the concentration of of n-3 fatty acids in tissue. Studies have also shown that greater composition of EPA & DHA in membranes reduces the availability of AA for eicosanoid production. "This works the other way, too. The more omega-6 is consumed, the less omega-3 is available to the tissues. So if two people eat a diet identical in omega-3 content, but one person’s diet is high in omega-6, and the other person’s is low, guess who will end up with more omega-3 in their tissues? That’s right – the one with a low omega-6 intake. This is why I constantly tell people that the most important step they can take in normalizing their omega-3:omega-6 ratio is not boosting omega-3 intake, but reducing omega-6." Many months back, I think it was HappyMartin who posted new research done on the subject, showing that we have a maximum PUFA limit. That means total omega-3 and omega-6 (and 9) combined. The studies showed that you can't counteract a high omega-6 diet by thinking you can just consume omega-3 supplements. I will try and find that again, because it's important. Same thing is being said by Chris Kresser. The aim is not necessarily to increase/supplement omega-3 intake. The aim is to reduce omega-6 intake as much as possible. Because remember we are not ruminants. omega-6 PUFAs accumulate in our fat reserves. And with our western diets, that means all those years of eating margarine, mayo, cooking in sunflower/canola oil, etc, we are chock full of omega-6 PUFAs already.
  17. I also enjoy my eggs, but maybe a 3 - 4 a week, tops. I've read before that there's a big difference in the omega 6:3 ratio between range-fed eggs (1.5:1) and 'supermarket eggs' (about 20:1). So if you enjoy eggs, and you still like your bacon and pork chops (like I do), I would suggest maybe forking out a little bit more for the free-range kind. I don't want to be one of those scaremongerers who say this and that is going to kill you. I'm definitely a much more relaxed paleo type of guy, I don't stick to strict dogma all the time. But a few things I am very fussy about: removal of all the bad vegetable oils from my life (excluding olive, avo and macadamia oil), try and eliminate grains from my life, and to reduce my omega 6 intake as much as possible. I can't avoid all sources of omega 6, but where I can I try keep it to 'reasonable' levels.
  18. Not too bad. Store bought mutton is around R50 - R70 per kilo, depending on the cut. But I'd pay your price because I'd know where it came from, how it was reared, that it's grass fed, etc. And it would give me an excuse to visit a part of SA that I haven't seen since I roamed those hills as a schoolboy (lots of good memories). What price do you sell your offal at?

  20. The product he would have taken is Phen375, a well known diet/weight loss product. Used to be sold in Clicks and Dischem, etc (not sure if it still is). Pinned for taking a diet pill. What’s next, being banned for drinking too much espresso?
  21. Ja, I also just take a tablespoon and scoop out a mouthful. Chased with a mouthful of cream sometimes. Or into my morning coffee, but it doesn't look good that way because it's lighter than water so all sits on top once melted. The other way I like to eat it is to make homemade macadamia nut butter with it.
  22. For me, the times I spend on my bike weaving through the traffic, hopping curbs and watching the sun rise/set on my bike each day, are the most precious moments of my day. It's where I start to feel 'whole' again, especially after a hard day. These are the times when I'm stoked to be young, alive and kicking. Doesn't matter that I'm now a middle aged man, when I'm on my bike I feel 12 years old again on my 80's bmx. No ways I'm going to let a stranger ruin my ride by getting me riled up. The next curb I hop and that idiot is already a distant memory .
