  1. I buy me a bike tool every month and the bleed kit was up for purchase on the list for the July month....after looking at the price, I decided that it would be cheaper to let the LBS bleed my brakes....its anyway once every 6 months or so, right...? Unfortunately...all are full now due to the MTB challenge 2moro......
  2. it costs R1024 at city cycles in canal walk........
  3. Very easy.... allen keys, flat screwdriver and maybe a padded hammer....
  4. If you plan to take up mountain bikeing seriously, I'll start with this bike. The Deore gears is soooo 'good enough' already. The dart 1 shock is not the best, but it does the business. the best part about entry level buys is that you can sell it in future for about 70-90% of its value that you paid for it. Mind you, that its when you decide to "upgrade"....hmmm...ja....did raak maar duur dan...because you then have a good idea of what exactly you want and what you want to do with the bike. To start off with though, I think it is a good amount to spend for your inital bike to check out the scene with. you might even decide not to upgrade in the future... just make sure that the kit on the bike is what is listed on the website...
  5. Thanks guys.....followed your advice and only kept it to step 1; removing the aangepakte mud and gunk, first with a toothpick and then with so very diluted sunlight dishwashing liquid. Just enough to remove that sand-scratching sound. Wiped clean excess grease and refitted crank.... pity a did not take pick of 'after'.... thanks again....... also, a friend @ work adviced me to get so moto-cross grease for the regreasing process...blue colour...will see if i can locate some..
  6. anyone...?
  7. I'm not looking for this type of advice.....
  8. So I'm trying to give the bikes a "major" service...I'm at the stage of removing the crank and servicing the external bearings for deore and LX cranks.... This is how it looks at the moment: A little dusty and a little greasy.... Can i: 1. Kleen Green to remove the dust, mud and gunk and also clean off access grease...? 2. Wipe clean and dry area and re-grease with normal Vaseline....? 3. Do I need to follow guide as shown above to clean bearings and re-grease? Do I need to do 1, 2 and 3 or can I stop at 1 and refit the crank? Nothing is out of sorts at the moment. Everything seems very normal and spins nice and smoothly.... It would be nice to know that I cleaned everything....
  9. So you are saying that the local agent is naar because you were able to buy the shock at half the price somewhere else...? I think that it should not matter.... Why is this different from a Bell helmet replacement. If you have proof of purchase, you can put in a claim anywhere to have it replaced at 30% of cost, right? I bought a Nokia phone in France and it was replaced locally due to a fault on the phone. The phone cost me 150 euros on promotion and locally it was priced over R4k.... Then again, this is Tech Q&A....
  10. openSUSE 11.1
  11. I think both are bloody good. My girlfriend's bike has XT and I've got X9....i prefer X9, not because its better than XT, but because my previous X7 was simply awesome and bulletproof....my X9 has had no adjustment since its been fitted to the SuperSilverGoos. The XT RD shifts really smoothly, much smoother than the X9, i think, and it is also alot quiter during operation. I don't think one can go wrong with any of the two. Both shift smooth, both are reliable, both shift on load, both are good in mud. I have noticed that my X9 cleared the mud quicker and got back to proper shifting (non-slip shifting) quicker than the XT....but this is just my experience. Oh yes, the XT shift is also easier on the thumb than the X9...but I'd still go for the SRAM stuff
  12. Ok....that's some nice "donor" kit on the Felt. The recon air shock is a big step up from the suntour. It very responsive and soaks up bumps very nicely. The Mavic rims are the XM117 if AFAIK and these are Mavic's entry level rim and not many people have issues with these (once again...don't take my word for it)....my GF's bike has the XT shadow RD and it really is smooth-n-quite on the shifts.... The Q series is Felts 'sport' bike....frame basically serves from entry level to the Q920...and is described as the 'all mountain HT' of Felt. Its a good bike....but then, I am a Felt fan...
  13. Hope Super_mil will post his experience.... me, no, I did not yet order the wheels (recessionary fears and stuff), but I'm definitely going for the 819 ust Mavics....I have a friend, weights 100kgs, thrashes his bike and it runs on 819s...his experience with them is that they are light enough and strong enough.....I'm 32kgs lighter than him, so I'm pretty confident the 819s are good enough... As I understand, the XM717 is the benchmark in XC rims....but don't take my word for it...
  14. I bought a RXC last year and I was interested in the Q920...last year it cost R7500.....R4k...eina... The Felts are excellent bikes...can't really say about the Q920, but I would take the advice of one bike mechanic who said...."....for a bike less than R20k, don't bother about the frame/manufacturer.....consider the kit the bike comes with....".... not sure if that is of any help...
  15. Someone mentioned on here that no other bike is in demand as a 2008 bike....there are quite a few 2008s around...
  16. i'd still go for a 2008 Mongoose comp....
  17. Must be torture for the kid... No....I'll dress my offspring in Spurs kit....Go Tottenham!!!!
  18. was thinking of getting one......just to see how it handles, pace.....brakes...etc.... anyone have any advice/experience with these? Was thinking of ordering up this one: CX10 Price is right......
  19. Mongoose...all the way...... the freedrive system is really good and has little bob on climbs...I'm reasonable light, so, maybe that does have some effect on bobbing... the Canaan tracks really good on single track and is really fast...plus....if you go for the comp, you'll know that the TEAM frame is exactly the same as the comp frame....only the kit differs.....so you can get better wheels, lighter fork and crank and your set...with a quasi-TEAM bike!! bak2basiks2009-06-02 08:37:05
