  1. FTF....can they do any other color....I found these guys, but have not contacted them yet...I heard its is not such a good idea to get brake calipers anodized....GTI red break calipers would look awesome on my bike.... bak2basiks2009-04-20 00:31:07
  2. Getting mine tomorrow....2008 Canaan Team.....gonna be hard to sleep tonight..........
  3. this looks good......will try to get a price... bak2basiks2009-04-15 13:00:55
  4. My bike's frame is a shiny silver and I was thinking of adding this beautiful blue...like the Hope 2 hubs color as a theme throughout the bike, with, yes, blue brake rotors, blue jockeys, clamps, spacers, skewers and cable housing...I guess the the silver XT hubs and Silver Mavic XM717 rims will be the cheapest...those crankbros wheels, industry 9 and chris king stuff is maar eina oppi pocket.... I'm not really the type to add R25k 20'' chrome spinners on my Corsa Lite with K&N cone filter....
  5. Ok...I don't want to know what is THE BEST wheel build, but I need advice... I'm considering buying shimano xt hubs and rims for a new wheelset (solid/reliable/light and servicable) but the Hope Pro 2 hubs with their funky colors plus a set of Mavic 717 white/brushed aluminium rims must be an awesome treat for your bike.... I know AC wheels are stronger and better, blah, blah ZTR Olympic blah, blah, DT Swiss, blah,....but any advice and suggestion from THE REAL bike-pimpers....what will make my bike SHINE...? Else, I'll just go for the Toyota (XT wheels and hubs)....
  6. Ok...maybe not the WHOLE bike, but at least the bottom of the rear wheel.....
  7. Well yes, that is a bit of a problem...as I have this "green-ness/tree hugging/save the planet" nagging afterthought once the bike is clean.....partcularly what to do with the inert, hydrophobic paraffin... Well, I chuck the left over turps into the left over paraffin in the emmer, squirt a healthy dose of Sunlight liquid in there and pour a kettle of hot water into the emmer....can't though the mix into the garden or the drain ....while the soapyness of the water is still there...., I pour it out onto the street.....after bout 3min there is no stain on the tarmac....
  8. This works best for me... 1. Wash bike and remove mud and gunk from frame/drivetrain/wheels/chain with diluted Sunlight liquid in hot/warm water.... 2. With a small paint brush, I "paint" my whole drivetrain (chain/cassette/cranks/chainrings/jockeys/deraillers) with paraffin (R14.95/750ml @ SPAR) . This I do two or three times depending on how much junk is stuck to the drivetrain until it is completely "harpic clean" 3. When there is no more gunk on the drivetrain, I use another paint brush to "rinse" all the paraffin off with turpentine (R14.95/750ml @ SPAR). (EDIT: Before I drop any parafin or turpentine on my bike, I wrap the whole bike up in newspaper to prevent parafin and turpentine to fall on the frame/wheels and tyres) 3. Use undiluted Sunlight liquid to wash and scrub drivetrain again....(to remove the turps actually) 4. Use undiluted Clean Green thereafter on drivetrain to get it "shop-like" new again (cassette looks completely "blinged-up" afterwards).... 5. Wash the whole bike again with "Rally Car Wash & Wax" car shampoo.... 7. Dry the whole bike off and wax the frame with Rally Car wax...then I let the bike bake in the sun for the rest of the day..... 8. Later the evening, when the whole chain is bone dry.....Squirt dry lube on the inside of each chain ring. 9. Let is stand for 15 -30min and lube again.... 10. Ride next morning....!! bak2basiks2008-08-14 16:49:40
  9. Yesterday I was able to take my new Steed to Jonkershoek and "thrash" it around a little. I'm very happy with my bike (speed/climbs,handling), however, I had problems with the brakes from day one and yesterday just exposed them as poor or poorly setup.... I returned the bike to the BS to fix the front brake (just after I bought the bike), but it still sounded as horrible as before. Apart from the noisy front brake, during yesterday's ride, the rear rotor started shaving the pads after a moderate decent.......; during a muddy singletrack expedition, the front wreaked of brake fluid.......and a few minutes later both brakes started making a horrible noise when engaged........I googled and came across this link: "turkey gobbling" or "turkey gobble" of the Avids...After the ride, I just rinsed the mud off the rotors and calipers with some water from my waterbottle and sure enough, there the whole front brake rotor was full of brake fluid. There is none now, but I just feel something is horribly wrong with my brakes.... Can I service these brakes myself....? I am not very trusting of the brakes at the moment and feel very, very insecure at speed on the bike (due to the brakes)... The BS is far and it will be cheaper to book the bike in at a LBS to have them look at the brake problem, however, I feel that I'm betraying the BS I bought the bike from as they are the ones who should relook at the brakes and set them up again or properly....seeing that the bike is brand new....
  10. Yes....it does...that's perhaps a reason to settle for this baby Looks like a Yeti Agreed!!
  11. I got scared...took the plunge.....got new bike.....still waiting to ride it......not sure if geometry/kit of the bike will change for 2009.....so there was no reason to wait till August 2009 to get the shock.... Can't wait to ride my new bike....its been raining here since the weekend....damn....
  12. I take it this notorious LBS is located somewhere in Bahrain...
  13. Ok....soooooo we are all shuddering in our boots from the 20-30% bike price increases expected for the new range of models coming in July/August. Now, I'm sure some LBSs want to move stock, but TBH I would rather appreciate a shop telling me the truth than scaring me into a purchase. Sure, I am not saying a LBS should sell me a 2009 bike at 2008 prices. If I'm going to spend R35k on a bike, the extra 6k is maybe not as critical, but if my overstreched budget is maxed out at R8k and then I'm hearing that the same bike will cost me R10-12k in a month's time, then sure I'm going to spend the money now. However, should that same 2009 bike come in on the floor selling R8500 or R9k, then I'll be very pi$$ed, because I was lied too. So, one for the distibutors.....what will the increases be...will a Schwinn Moab Disc 2009 for example cost R9880, 30% up from its current R7600 pricetag? Will a 2009 Mongoose Meteore Team cost R24998.45, 25% up from R19999? Will a R20k/R25k Yeti FS frame cost R30k+ in August? Some LBSs say increases are 30%, other say the normal 10-15% increases are on the cards.....which is it really? Just, please, an honest response. What do the rest of thehubse.co.za forumers think...?
  14. Thanks... I had a LOOK (no punn intended) at the Quartz on the LOOK website and they do LOOK kinda sexy. Its a stupid extra expense, but they do LOOK the part. Having said that, i will consider pedals that will make it easier to clip/unclip in heavy muddy conditions. The "cleat cleaning routine" one get's into with the 520s is becoming irritating. I'm sick of pulling a "Naas Botha" looking for a dry patch everytime.
  15. Yep..!! Inquired about this model, but no more 17.5'' 2008 models available......one hubber is letting a 2007 19.5'' Pro model go for R14k...I'd go max R10k for the bike.... Oh...should I wait for 2009 specced bikes...?
  16. I don't really understand this part..........well, this is my dilemma.... u c, I've heard another argument from a LBS owner that bikes under the R10k should not really be a headache decision as ALL r made in Taiwan (+/- a China here and there)...so...one should just concern urself with the standard kit and upgrade as much as u think its worth....if at all.....now I see his point, in that bikes at that price range (GT/Mongoose/Merida/Schwinn etc) will do the All Mountain job "with ease"...so the stock kit is the main driver here....otherwise....throw urself into the lower end "race" league....almost like a wannabee R20k HT machine "feelgooder"....aargghhhh...I don't know....add R600 and the carbon Schwinn is looking very reachable...........aaarrggghhh.....R5k more......damn...!!! I'm going nutts...!!!
  17. glad that it works for her! as i suggested in my post' date=' i reckon wsd bikes work better for women with really short upper bodies.[/quote']Yes, sorry 'bout that...I was actually agreeing with u but noticed that I didn't state that. Yes, she has a shorter upper body and I agree that the design works well for her...surprisingly.....
  18. @holy roller: That was my initial approach to the whole "women's specific" thing.....what difference was there to the old chick bikes with the top tube welded lower down the seat tube....? But I must say that the difference in feel (for her) is night and day.... @mountain lion: Clearly it has inspired her to want to MB more. Its all she talks about since the weekend....getting her new Specialized....and how she'll eat up the "technical" single tracks etc....obviously this attitude is just what I need when going on rides with her....so, yeh, I'm keen on getting her the bike....or let's say...I'll pump in the "extra" petrol money to get the full suspension version. So yes, we are wheeling and dealing to make this "project" work.....I'm really sad for her as she really thought she'll be able to get the frame.....but we'll check out other brands this weekend.... My girlfriend is very "girly"......things like pink bikes/pink flowers on helmets and stuff she diggs, but maybe just to irritate me...The GTw Avalanche 3.0 is such a bike which she thought was "sooooo coooool" but immediately noticed the lower specced kit and stuff.....(look this one only has 24 gears, mine has 27).....same with the Myka comp....
  19. My girlfriend has a 2007 Mongoose Tyax Super (bought @ Sportsman's Warehouse R3999/ set up at LBS). Great kit on the bike. She has got the bike for more than a year now and it has treated her very well. She has not clocked that many miles on the bike and all components have practically no scratches on them. We then saw on the weekend the women's specific Specialized Myka HT (R4600), but the kit is as entry level as can come....however, the bike is much lighter than her Mongoose. Also, she felt immediately comfortable on the bike. She also loved the full suspension version of the Myka. We then wanted to the buy just the frame of the Specialized (HT or full suss version) and build all the Mongoose components over onto the Specialized and sell the Mongoose frame for a few hundred bucks, but unfortunately, Specialized does not sell the frames of these bikes seperately.....so...she's in tears at the moment...... She's now hoping for a Trek version.....apparently Trek can "make a plan". Pity about the Specialized....she really loved those Myka bikes....
