  1. I have a frame that looks very similar, I think it's a mid to late 80s Mondiale slx. But, I don't know anyone that has one.
  2. I WISH!!!!
  3. Actually my property is top background, my daughters WendyHouse is the white roofed thingy top. middle.
  4. Still need to finish my bititan so we can ride together.
  5. Yes, people pay shite loads, i think R1200, or something, to ride them around the 50 hectare plot!!!!!! I don't like it, slaves to tourism! Sent from my IdeaTab S6000-H using Tapatalk
  6. You're right!!!! Elies are not mine. They're slaves to tourism, make money for the owners, but they're nice to watch, even if I don't like the 'slavery'. Fence is none too sturdy and elies have been known to come through and eat my flowers, but they've apparently changed the zapper, more volts, so I've not had an incursion for some time now.
  7. My farm on the very right of the pic!!!!!!!! https://www.bikehub.co.za/features/_/news/mtb/sa-mtb/rebello-and-neethling-victorious-on-stage-1-of-the-recm-knysna-200-r4994?source=topic
  8. I certainly had a great Youth Day, finishing off one of the memories from my RELATIVE youth. Although the 'unofficial' Kirk history site http://www.kirk-bicycles.co.uk/Kirk-History.htm suggests Kirk's were first sold, marketed, around 88/89, I'm sure I remember seeing 1 or 2 in the mid 80s. Whatever, mine is an early one, it has the steel forks and weighs in at 10.68 kg as you see her. Not too bad really, lighter than some other bikes, but certainly not a weight weenie's bike. She's dressed in '88 Shimano 105 (1050), with Pelisiser hubs and Mavic Open 4CDs. The spokes were originally galvanised, but quite badly corroded, so I rebuilt with stainless spokes - probably a no-no, but sourcing good condition galvanised spokes is not easy. Seatpost and stem are Kalloy and bars are Hsinlung. The front derailleur is not 105 (0550), the 105 FD did not fit, it's too wide!!! If I put spacers between the FD mount and the frame, the 105 FD protruded too far, so changing to the 39 tooth biopace was not possible. The saddle is temporary. I have a Mundialita that needs recovering ---- one day when I've developed that skill!!!! I thought quite long and hard about how to dress her. Most of the Kirk's I remember seeing had Shimano 105, perhaps 600. So I decided 105 would be about right. I also thought about painting her, the white is quite oxidised, but I polished instead. I might replace the decals at some stage.
  9. GTJ, what brake levers do you want the hoods for? They're all, or mostly, different, so it will depend on what levers. You will be very, very lucky to find anything locally, unless one of the retro guys has spares. Often we have to buy off Amazon, or eBay and wait for the post to arrive!!! But let us know for which levers. Shoes? you'll have to ask around for. Again, you can buy overseas, but postage is the problem, just get them to describe them as 2nd hand bicycle spares.
  10. I see both Yify and PopcornTime back again!!!!
  11. and another (idiot)
  12. a couple more
  13. Another wasted weekend! I bought this Dacc about 1986/7 (memory is a bit sketchy). It's more or less as I bought it, with a couple of changes: Bought it with Shimano 600 brake levers, no one liked the Campy levers, which I've now put on. It came with Shimano 600 headset and BB too, both of which are now Athena. I can't remember the seat post, I think it was Kalloy, but it's now Athena. I lived within spitting distance of the sea for a decade or so ago and this lady and her bits took a beating. I stripped her about 3 years ago. A friend restored the paintwork, keeping the decals as pristine as possible. I took all the bits apart, cleaned, polished and lubricated. She's back to almost new

  15. Not my posts, only trying to keep all the info in 1 thread! Frames were built by Duncan McIntyre. The artwork for the branding was done by the previous owner of your Ragley
  16. Been meaning to add WILLIE MARX onto this thread. Willie says he built a couple of hundred frames, after learning the art in Italy from Cino Cinelli, sometime in the 70s. My one (on the right) is probably early 90s, rode it for Eroica Brittania, with my son.
  17. Not much info on Cosmos, but a cool thread to keep track of, non the less! https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/11903-south-african-bicycle-frame-builders/
  18. Anyone interested in a set of BORAs (tubbies)? Bought these about a year ago, but have decided I'm never going to use them. I paid R5000 for them (with 2 Campy wheelbags and 10 spd Record cassette) and new skewers about R600 = R5600 Anyone interested at that price, before I advertise them?
  19. Nice bike GT But I don't think you should repaint her. See if you can get a local paint shop, panel beater, to match the paint and patch her up. Always much nicer to have the original patina, just makes her look so cool. What do the other retro dudes think???????
  20. Absolutely no problem!! What make is the bike? Seems there's some panto on the seat stays, what does it say??? Sent from my IdeaTab S6000-H using Tapatalk
  21. Sorry B, only the 1 pair of levers!!!!
  22. You'll notice some of the GIpiemme calliper parts are painted!!! Short of re-chroming them, or finding a way to nickel plate them, I decided just to clean and paint. I've looked into nickel plating, as an option for these small parts, but not as easy as it sounds
  23. Finished my FANTINI at last. I know very, very little about this frame. I bought it from www.retrospectivecycles.com when I rode Eroica Britannia in 2014. They told me they bought it in Milan. I tried searching the webs and the only answer I received was from a US site, that said they thought it might be Canadian, as a German/Canadian made Fanini frames. Then about a year later I found that a US photographer, Joey Celis, said that he had imported a Fantini direct from Italy in 1985. I've tried to send emails to Joey, but not had a reply, not sure I should keep on, though he does seem a bit of a bike nut!!!! Going by what I can see and what I know, my guess is the frame is early to mid 1980s. It came with hidden cables and the mounted Victory shifters (notice the TT style aero design). So I've used Victory front and rear derailleurs. The brake callipers, hubs and crank are Gipiemme. Spokes are galvanised, but I stripped the wheels, soaked the spokes overnight in cheap vinegar and then rubbed each down with tinfoil. Then I rebuilt and trued the wheels ,,,,, YES, did it myself. Very satisfying I've included a close up of the signature on top tube, maybe one of you sleuths can decipher it. I think the frame was made to honour(?) Alessandro Fantini who was an Italian professional road bicycle racer. Fantini died after a crash at the end of the sixth stage of the 1961 Tour of Germany. I know I need a new flash to remove the shadows, but I'm broke, too much spending on bikes.
