  1. Is the back brake backpedal?? Looks a bit like a Philips I used to ride to school. Was Sturmy Archer 3 speed, but then turned into a fixie, girls were very impressed!!!!
  2. Good find, very useful, thanks.
  3. Picked up this '93 Basso Coral. Frame says 50cm, but cc is 51.5 square. Columbus CroMo (apparently was Matrix until Trek pulled copyright). Anyone on this thread interested, before I advertise in classifieds?
  4. and again
  5. and again
  6. Take the one you didn't use back, for a refund. Then it's only 40 bucks, not too bad.
  7. to the one who's debating???
  8. Exactly, debate is debate. To resort to insults and crude innuendo is a true sign baaaaa, baaaa
  9. Your interpretation, your assumption. Baaaa, baaaa
  10. baaaaa, baaaaa, baaaa perhaps a bunch of skaap?
  11. I've written quite extensively on this subject and done a fair amount of research. Has anyone else? It's illegal! To be a woman and drive in Saudi. To be a Jew and own property in Hitler's Germany. To be black and walk through a WHITES ONLY entrance. To marry the woman you love, if she's not the same colour as you. How many more examples would you like? So, legality is not always a good argument. The law is an ass and dynamic. It changes when it's out of date and no longer works, fulfills it's intended purpose.. I ride on the WRONG (!) side and I'll give you clues why. This law was promulgated in the late 19th Century, when horse drawn vehicles and human powered vehicles outnumbered automobiles and where faster than automobiles. What was the cycle to auto ratio in 1900? What is it now (given that there are more than 12 million registered vehicles in SA)? What was the average speed of automobiles in 1900? Where cycles as fast? What is the SLOWEST speed limit today? Can any cyclist, other than a pro, cycle at that speed for any length of time? What was the fastest an automobile could travel in 1900? What is the maximum speed limit today, let alone the maximum speed of a car! In other words, the LAW was written to keep 'fast' moving traffic (horses, cycles and automobiles) away from pedestrians (read the original law). Are things the same? or Are they different? If we had cycle lanes (a poor attempt to resolve a huge problem within an existing law) I would use them. BUT, we don't, so , in summary: I've been riding 50 odd years. When I obeyed the law (most of the 50 odd years) I was knocked off my bike 3 times, broke a few bones, but still alive. For the last 10, I've been breaking the law and despite a few close shaves (idiots on the road, who can deny that!!!), not one car has come close. If it was working, I would suggest we leave it alone (don't fix what's not broken), but let's change the law if it's not working. IMHO
  12. I know there are duplicates, but I'm an untidy person!!! And of course, there is the LINKS page on many of these sites.

  14. This still seems available, I spoke to the guy some months ago, but not prepared to pay and wait!!!! http://boksburg.olx.co.za/colnago-master-olympic-iid-481793438 http://images01.olx.co.za/ui/4/42/38/1378686912_481793438_6-Colnago-Master-Olympic-South-Africa.jpg
  15. Just thinking!!!! Us old guys and guys that like old bikes, use the interwebs a lot to determine the age of components, frames, wheels etc. I have a list of sites in my favourites that I go to to check dates, colours, components, values etc etc. But I'm sure, even with all the time I've spent on the webs, that there are many, many more. For instance, I've just found this one: http://www.velo-retro.com/ Is it worth starting a new thread for sites with info on the interwebs???? Under which section .... TECH SHACK??? Or should we use this thread? I'm happy to copy my FAVOURITES folder to this thread, so you can add any you don't have. Thoughts??
  16. You can buy Miche, Mavic or BBB 9spd cassettes on eBay for about £25 It's just the shipping, that's why it's often easier to make one up yourself
  17. It's pretty easy to build your own cassette: You need the have the cogs you want, and these you can make up from a 10 speed, 8 speed, whatever. It's the spacers that are key? Can't remember the 9spd Campag spacers width offhand, but easy enought to find on sheldonbrown.com, or a few other sites. Shimano 9spd is almost the same, so you could even use shimano spacers.
  18. I wish it was, but I don't think so, it looks suspiciously like the SA made ones. No chrome anywhere. I've just put it into storage, so can't even take a pic.
  19. Yeah, I read something similar once upon a time. Just found this on BIKEFORUMS I have met Paolo Zini. He now works as a goldsmith in the province of Parma in Italy. He has absolutely no ties with cycling whatsoever and has some rather negative memories of the time spent among the pros (he raced for the SCIC team in 1970 and 1971). He is/was too intelligent to accept the life of a domestique in the 70's and not fast enough to race for himself. He sold bikes out of a shop in Parma and exported quite a few to South Africa. My memory is growing somewhat sketchy about the rest that he told me, but I believe that by the 80's he had already given up frame building, so I doubt that your bike was built by Paolo. I seem to recall that Paolo 'sold' the rights to build Zini bikes to someone in South Africa, so it is perhaps more likely that the bike was actually made there. Given the large number of South Africans and Zimbabweans who have emigrated to Australia, it would be quite easy that the bike ended up in Oz.
  20. Anyone know when Gotty started building Zini in SA? I have a Campion MK 1, made from Columbus SL tubing, which I assume was one of the early ones, probably around 82 to 85. All the others I've seen, the later models, are Reynolds tubing.
  21. Something I didn't know, thanks. I knew they had bought the name, same as Alpina, but I didn't think about the frames before they bought the rights to use the name. Same as Le Jeune I suppose, except that they were built here and in Europe at the same time. Lovely lady!
