  1. I had persistent problems with ITB for 3 years. I was against surgery and tried all therapies, stretches but it kept coming back. I had an excellent specialist knee/hip doctor who finally recommended the surgery. It was a one day hospital booking. My problem never came back. If I recall my doctors comments he said that the band itself doesn’t really stretch much so if maintenance is not working, surgery is the only option. The surgery cuts out a small triangle out from the itb. This effectively lengthens it but also weakens it initially. This is why its important not to overcook the itb too soon over surgery. When the scar tissue grows back after 6 weeks, it is stronger than the original. He said the scar tissue is much more flexible than the original itb, so it helps to create stretch and flexibility in the future. I’d fully recommend it. Just find a good surgeon.

  8. Can't comment on Sunto but I've had a garmin (which I bust) - loved it. Then I tried the polar rs800cx....doesn't compare to the garmin in most areas. Although the garmin software is not great, garmin + sportstracks is awesome for deep analysis. The data the comes from the garmin is also fairly open so can be read by many apps....Polar software is ok, but in my opinion isn't nearly as good as sportstracks. Polar is very closed. Also, the polar service in SA is an absolute shocker whereas garmin is really on the ball (I've had the experience of getting both a garmin edge 305 and the polar rs800cx both repaired under warranty before). I'm now looking at getting a garmin unit again and chucking the polar.
  9. do your homework first and definitely check out the latest garmin 800 as an alternative. my rs800cx is just over a year old and the start/lap button stopped working properly. apparently this is a manufacturing problem with some of these units. polar repair them under warranty but you have to pay to ship it to jhb, so its a real pain to get service unless you are in jhb
