  1. I've Googled and Pinterested so many chess sets I'm seeing things ... lol. I think I'm going to make Rosewood and Beech top, small table with two drawers and turned legs ... but still not 100% convinced.
  2. Nope, don't believe you Pics or it didn't happen he he
  3. Anyone with a handmade chess set? I've got an itch that I need to scratch ... been threatening to build one for 22 years now ... Guess it's time
  4. Jis, just as I think I'm over the 'restoration' wave, I get another three dining room sets to do. Eish. Two is quick - light sanding and refinish, the other one is a complete varnish strip with color change - 8 seater Oregon set with buffet. I'm overquoting on this one though, I reckon there's going to be a surprise or two in the works ...
  5. Actually, I may have a line on some, erm, rather large yellow planks ... think they measured around 200mm X 200mm ... I'll go visit tomorrow. But, I'd personally go for something that contrasts with the yellowwood, like Blackwood, or stinkwood. Would prefer Imbuia, but yah well no fine I'm not going down that road.
  6. Tsek.
  7. It looks pretty flat ... maybe give it a nice surfacing both sides, keep the 'live' edge intact, and make up either Blackwood or steel legs for it ...
  8. Oooh that's a nice plank. Where are you based?
  9. Sorry for the wait on the mallets guys, hopefully everyone got theirs? If not, please give me shout / call. Hopefully I'll be back on my feet tomorrow and back to the workshop as well.
  10. Those bowl gouges ...
  11. RAW Linseed oil (it takes longer to dry than BLO, and creates a better coat) Otherwise Woodoc 30 or 35 (if you want to darken the wood a bit) - it's polywax, so a mixture of polyurethane and wax, essentially, and gives 'the same' effect as BLO and turps. First choice, RLO, repeat in 3 months, then repeat every 6 months.
  12. Do you know Furnigloss? I've used it a couple of times, but not sure what's in it. Buffs up to a brilliant shine.
  13. See the shine on Armpies' Mallets? That from BUFFING, no varnish, no oil ... just a tiny amount of wax
  14. Argh no man I thought we were gonna start moering things
  15. I'm going to weigh in with a very, very small contribution regarding the threatening bitchfight here ... Only 1% of a tree (By mass OR volume) is alive at any point in time (the Cambium IIRC) And if varnish was so crap, why do us professionals still use it? Each and every type of timber treatment has its place and application - even steel wool and vinegar. To paraphrase the Beetles - "A closed mouth gathers no foot"
  16. I'll check my spares bin, I think I've got a couple.
  17. What size are you looking for, Gandalf?
  18. Mini Mallets should be done by Friday. FINALLY had a new appy start yesterday, it's been months without one.
  19. When I was still insane (ie doing kitchens) I used a combination of things. I'm partial to using Sketchup for my designs overall, I used that for some kitchens as well. I've also used http://www.compusoftgroup.com/Old/content/products/DesignAtWeb/App/DesignAtWeb_EN_ZA.htm this web app, which is fairly nifty and features nice lighting etc. Nowadays I stay as far away as possible from building kitchens, I've just grown averse to that type of customer ... they tend to be a strange breed (in my experience)
  20. Have I told you lately how much I love this ******* country?
  21. Shot guys - my email address is chief@treeware.co.za - please send shipping details etc there.
  22. I like this form of price haggling Much more entertaining than the usual Flea-Market crowds. Dimensions that worked really really well turned out to be 70mmX70mm head, with an 80mm long handle, the bulbous end is around 38mm thick. If you want it thicker or thinner just ask, but this grip is just sublime - it gives you the option to either full-hand it or pinch it as it starts slipping, for a more 'delicate' stroke .... lol that sounds dirty all of a sudden. I'll make them for R175 a piece, and R99 shipping via Aramex (or mahala pick-up in Pretoria). Reckon I'll be able to chuck 5 of them in a bag before Aramex complains.
  23. Flip that's nice. I'd be super tempted to cut that so that the two long sides have a rough outside - not the top, as that needs to curve to form a shallow angle with the striking faces. Hmmm ...
  24. Unlike ... lol.
