  1. Hi The sid is lighter and stiffer as well as more responsive in my opinion. The reba is plusher as I think it makes more use of the travel and is quite a reliable fork that does not have to be serviced as freuently as a fox or sid, however, I would still go with the sid. Its just far more respnsive. As for the groupset, there is a reason xt is the most popular goupset. Especially when it comes to the rear deraileur, slx will suck plus the slx cranks scratches like a b*#t&$. For R3000 extra you will feel a noticeable difference and I thus highly reccomend the storm 1.0
  2. To be honest, reading and argueing about this really is quite futile. Its linked to universal equilibrium: there will somehow be an equal amount of opposing point of views to those in favour that his legs provide and advantage. In my opinion it comes down to practical application. If you have ever started to train seriously for running nad start achieving athletic speeds then one can start making certain conclusion. I run middle to semi-long distance: 3000m to 15km races and find that I am highly reliant on my achilles tendon and calves providing what I like to think of as elasticity. When my feet impact, the kinetic energy is transferred into elsatic potential energy in my claves. Basic kinematics. This results in the conservation of energy allowwing the body to do more work with less input. Calves by all means thus do outweigh its mass. Without my lower part of the limb, I would probably suck at running. Regarding scar pistorious, I think the real aswer will lie in the ration of elastic potential energy to mass of a modelled calf (predicitng what his loer limbs would be like) to his current carbon fiber limbs. Different forms of carbon fiber have different degress of young modulus which must also be taken into consideration. Best bet, would probably be not to focus too much on the subject. Running has always been linked to genetic superiorority and now it has been invaded by the mechanical realm. This does cause issues!
  3. Cannondale has a far larger degree of flex in the rear triangle of their flash carbon 29er compared to it rival s-works which is pretty stiff. There is a reason that many pro riders use the s-works in short cross country races. You can read the reveiews of the two bikes on bikeradar: the cannondale is plush while the s-works will rattle you but never let you down in a climb if you are fit of course. Plus, I am excited about the new lefty coming out soon. Apparently its new design scraps almost a 100g. I've also seen a lot of riders use the scott scale 29er for long marathon races.
  4. Hi When considering weight, one must realise that the frame and components etc is static weight while the wheels are rolling weight. This means wheel weight is much more important. Thus the mosen has a light wheelset but a **** frame with crappy geometry. This is the lightest the bike will most probably be. The giant is highly upgrandeable because it has a heavy wheelset. The giant wheels are nuke proof though and the giant has the best frame by far. They are the top alumium frame manufacturers. Scott! I don't really like their low end bikes. However, as mentioned, nothing will beat the silverback vida 1 in a run for its bucks. If you took them all for a ride you would feel the vida has and edge due to its low weight wheels and decent frame as well plus the silver and red looks awesome!!!!!!
  5. Must agree with Covie, the xtc is in a class of its own.
  6. Hi I am building a rigid ss and have bought a kenda karma 1.9x 2.9 tyre. Seriously light at 520g. I am going to use it in the rear. Where the catch comes is should I use the kenda in the rear and use a 2.2 cont-x king at the front for more grip. However the conti weighs in at 700g so is the extra weight worth the grip? I will be riding mostly at Lourensford.
  7. Hi I am converting my silverback vida 1 29er to a ss. It has a sram x9 crank at the front so I will be using a sram chain. Which chain tensioner would you recommend. I was thinking mabye the shiman alfine s500 or s510. Which one would be more reliable. I also want to change the rear gear now and then depending on where I am going to ride. Not sure if I can usee the shimano either. Please share your reccomendations.
  8. Buy a new bike-its fun! Who doesn't love new mountain bikes?
  9. Keep in mind precisely what your strengths and weaknesses are as well. If you can climb up hills quite easily but sort of suck at the technicals, then a dual suspension can be your answer. Vic versa, would be better at a hardtail. Then there is also the fact that dual susepnsion are supposed to increase traction. For example the cannondale scalpel 26er with its pivotless design feel just like a hardtail (sort of lighter than most as well) but has a bit of travel (specific type of travel) that allows you to gain traction on technical parts so you don't go over the handlebars while it allows for standing climbs on fine surfaces (whereas a hardtail would spin out). All, depends. I would reccomend riding a couple of dual suspension and hartails.
  10. Hi Could this work for someone who wants to do xc racing. The frame is not any heavier than the medium that much but what are the cons. Would the geometry be affected a lot and could it be fixed by a seatpost turned around etc.
  11. The reason you sometimes get that concrete feeling is if your body's glycogen stores are already filled thus slowing your carbohydrate metabolism. The best would be, if your preparing for the argus is too higher your carb metabolism efficiency by eating 60 percent protein for 5 to 7 days and then loading on low gi carbs such as future life and low gi energy bars like mcnabs energy bars. These foods are high in carbs and not dense. Do not take caffeine as it is a diuretic which means you will feel great at first but start to dehydrate quickly. As far as future life goes, you will actually not find a better pre race meal. I woul recommend eating it with lots of chocolate Milo added and some cashew and peanuts. Peanut butter is useless because the fat gets absorbed too quickly regardless of what some might say. Hope this helps. Remember that vitamins and sodium bicarbonate also help in performance.
  12. On your 180km bike ride its all about being aero to conserve the maximum amount of watts produced at your maximum speed to be able to own your run. Aero helmets are your best bet when travelling at 25 to 30 km/h but when you hit 40km/h things change... Your ultimate weapon is a disc wheel which creates that feeling of cutting through the air like a thin blade. But disc wheels are so #@_! expensive?!?!?!?!?!?!? THe answer, convert your training wheels into disc wheels. With 94% the aero abilities of a zipp disc wheel this is bound to bring you success. Constructed out of ABS plastic composite (which does not warp and melt like conventional wheelbuilder disc covers)it can be removed and re-applied several times and only adds about 350g max to your wheels mass. Now available in black and white and 650c and 700c wheels for R1800 E-mail: dsolms1@aol.com Sms: 0829742433
