  1. Okay. Decision made. Maybe. Carb also means FAR less electronics. No engine management software, no gargantuan wiring looms, no faff and simplicity at its best. It can be done with pretty much any of the motors I'm considering, even the SR20DE (which would be AWESOME with some 45DCOE's on there!) and it would mean a far simpler install. Only electronic devices would be the dizzy, ignition wiring and a few bits n bobs like indicators and lights etc. Also don't need any of the fancy lambda probes and flow meters that an engine management system may need. It's also far cheaper to set up and maintain, even though it's more hands on. Feckit. That's it. I'm on carb, baby!!!
  2. Differnce is that carbs I can tjoon myself. And no need for fancy fuel pumps or surge tanks. ITO carb - which motor?
  3. Sometimes. The trade-off is that as soon as you look at harder compounds, you lose grip. So in essence you *should* be looking for a spare, crappy wheelset for your commutes, and sticking whatever you want on there so that you don't rip your trail tyres to shreds on your commutes. For commuting - I'd go with either your old tyres, or some semi slicks, or even some crossmarks for the extra on-tar grip (they grip better on tar than dirt) For trail riding - look no further than Magic Mary & Rock Razor. In super gravity, so that you can run them at lower pressure for even more mad-hatter grip levels. That'd be my recommendation. Source a cheap 2nd hand wheelset (doesn't matter about the size - it's a commuting wheelset after all, and you're running discs so that's not an issue ito compatability) and then dedicate your current wheelset to trail riding...
  4. yeah, it was. Pity it was so long ago... Having said that, I've tried very hard to NOT grow up...
  5. That would be awesome... If I go carb (which I may, as I love carb fed motors) then I need some Weber magic!!! Any chance of a price?
  6. WHen!? Relatively new development? With the right movie (Interstellar / gravity etc) it must be fantastic. OOOOOH!!!! New Star wars would be epic!
  7. AH! Top mounted pedal box! Need one of those for the build. Far better than the bottom mounted ones. Could make it myself, but... yeah. That looks so good.
  8. Yep, I'm on there at the moment, and looking at all sorts of build diaries. LOVE the sound of properly fettled 45's / 40's on a motor...
  9. Birkin isn't an option anymore. They can't offer the chassis alone, which is a shame.
  10. Ja. I'm a veedub man myself, but apparently you need a custom bell housing to mate them to a suitable gearbox. So that rules them out, unfortunately. Edit: and if you find a 2l 16v somewhere, it's already gone by the time you pick up the phone. The dub community is very active in thay respect and WILL ensure that someone in their circles knows about it asap if one comes up. I mean, there's even a dedicated thread for gumtree bargains.
  11. I've driven an s2000. Took it for a test drive when I was still in durban. Still the most amazing car I've had the privilege of driving. I've been driven in better, but that's the best I've driven.
  12. K20 I think it is. Yes. K20A2 @ 200HP. As seen in the vtec versions. Damn good motors. In fact, all of the k20 / k24 variants have the potential to perform above their listed power / torque figures if you do it right. Honda built a lot of fat into those things.
  13. yeah, it is. This is like a return to my youff, when I had my mini. In many respects that was when my true petrolheadedness kicked in. Rebuilding motors, changing pistons, rods, rings etc as I wanted / needed more poooooweeeeer. Only thing I didn't do was rebuild gearboxes - that was beyond my ken.
  14. Shot for the heads up. I know you're the clutch / brake / everything else bloke.
  15. It's also the motor used for the locost 7 racing series. But... the SR20 would present a better option from which to build a good, solid, reliable car when the power goes north.
  16. You see why this is still in the research phase!? So many choices!!!
  17. Nope, would need a custom bell-housing. And that's $$$$$.
  18. And the revs!!! Oh lordy, the REVS!!! This is getting expensive. But yeah. Nissan is def a good option. 15k isn't bad, incl the box. Hmmmmm....
  19. oh - on the understeering into a tree bit - if I go 6 pot up front, I'll definitely be putting some ballast in the back (in addition to my heft) BUT - people have been known to put 8 potters in these things with some success. Must handle like a pig, but yeah. Also - given that the bimmer 6 pot gives you approx. 125kw out the box, and a slightly tuned blacktop can give the same amount with a remap and some trick bits (and the SR20 can give a LOT more than that.. up to 200kw if you have enough tom) then it becomes more... responsible.. to go the 4pot route. Especially seeing as that won't need any more bracing in the chassis... Which I'll be doing anyway, cos the weight penalty won't be that high in the grand scheme of things. I'm not going to race the thing, am I?
  20. gives me the grille just thining about it...
  21. Yeah, but that Superboss was a coffin on wheels...
  22. Yeah, that's why I'm thinking along the lines of the 4 potters and a potential turbo upgrade int eh future Those sr20DET's are indeed potent. But a mate of mine has planted a nasty little seed in my head - s2000 motor. Pity they're upwards of 50k for an okay one...
