  1. Sjoe, it's been a bit of a rollercoaster... the antibiotics I took Monday, when feeling 90% healthy, did nothing, actually, made me worse I reckon - so it would appear I have a viral infection. By Tues night I was really not feeling great. Weds morn first thing I went to the doc, he jabbed me with a booster, prescribed some high end post nasal/sinusitis fighters (as that's where my main issues lie) and then he sent me off to the physio for sinusitis treatment - some lazer therapy, 5 pins in my forehead and cheekbones along with another two in my hands. Crazy that the moment those pins went in, my nose started to pour... finished off the session on the nebulizer. Felt like a bit of a science experiment, but have to admit I felt immediately a bit clearer.

Went home loaded up on drugs and tried to get some rest. By lunch time I felt very poorly though, even had a little dust attack in my bedroom when a mate sent me a Comrades 'gees' video - feeling pretty certain I wasn't going to make it to the start line. I went back to sleep after some lunch and midday meds and low and behold a couple hours later when I woke up I felt like a whole new person. Had the best nights sleep in some time as well and feeling pretty good this morning - I'd say 98% there... just a little nasal congestion, but a far throw from the last few days. Still dancing a little bit of a tight rope, but optimistic now I will be lining up on Sunday.

Still a little test run to get through down in Durbs tomorrow, but feeling pretty confident it will be okay.

In the desperation to get myself better for this little trot I forgot my new shoes are only 1 run old! 8.8km's of 'running in'... I have at least been wearing them every single day for the last two weeks, but obviously not ideal. The other option is shoes with over 800kms in them, so the new guys it is! I'll need all the cushioning possible for the downhills.

Wife has also managed to pull it together in time, she did a little run yesterday and got through it feeling good. Really hoping she has a great run on the day.

Really glad to hear everyone else is getting things sorted and in place for the big day - travel safe, stay off your legs and enjoy the build up

Looking forward to all the war stories

Run in your new shoes with the old in soles from your old shoe maybe?

Glad you are making it to the start!!

  2. These last few runs before Comrades has become a real drag , it’s cold it’s dark and it has been a long road to get here. Really hard to stay motivated for some other reason .

It feels like that last few meter before you reach the summit where your body tells you to stop but you have to keep going.

    Sent from my iPhone using

I'm feeling the same at the moment, just need to get through these last couple of days.

To top it all off everyone in the office is sick and i'm acting like Sheldon Cooper trying to stay away from all the germs.

  3.  I did 5 run/walk km yesterday and stopped immediately when the pain kicked in but I'm back to limping today. I've decided to accept that I won't be running Comrades this year. Mainly for my mental health. I'm losing my mind trying to calculate how I can heal the knee, stay fit and still run on the 10th of June, and if so, what should my new time be, etc.

So I figure the only way to approach this is to focus on the knee and getting it permanently better as the ultimate goal. If it happens to be okay to run on the morning 0f 10 June then I'll do that but that's no longer the main intention or even part of the plan, just a secondary bonus if it happens.

Running injuries are like the five stages of grief and I think I've just transitioned from depression to acceptance :)

No man that really sucks, I hope by some chance you are still able to run on the 10th

  4. Still in Trauma ICU in an induced coma as of last night - last I heard they will be bringing him out soon - before the weekend unless he has a setback.

Thanks for the update, lets how there are no further setbacks and he is on his way to a speedy recovery.

  5. I guess the screenshot must be made on Monday morning for those still training at 12 at night...

Top 5 finish for me before I start tapering, I'll take it

I see a lot of the big guns are already tapering, I managed to make the top 10 on Randburg Harriers Strava group and you normally need 120km + to make the top 10.

  6. Yeah, usual route easier in my books... first 15km hard, then a nice fast easy finish. This reverse route was pretty challenging all the time with very few free miles.

    Good training indeed though

I've never done the normal route but enjoyed the reverse, I took it very chilled at comrades pace. I would hate to race the route though think it would be extremely tough if you push for a good time.

  7. So what are your training plans for the weekend?

I am running Jackie Mekler 25km tomorrow and a relaxing 15km on Sunday before having a huge lunch with my family for Mother's Day.

If the sore throat decides to leave me alone will do a easy race pace 34km tomorrow with the club and then maybe the Pirates reverse 21km on Sunday if the legs are feeling up to it.

Then its TAPER time!!!

  8. So, what's the general consensus on Comrades tapering? Three weeks or four weeks? The latter seems pretty long to me.

According to my training schedule I start tapering on the 14th of May so i'll have a 4 week taper session.

I still have pretty high millage scheduled for the first week so although its a 4 week taper, week 1 doesn't really count. If that makes any sense.

  9. Flu is clearly rampant out there at the moment... I've just finished my antibiotics, about 99% healthy from the look of it, resting heart rate is a little high (65), but to be expected. Hoping to do a little trot later, dust out some cobwebs... Same boat as Hacc, peak weaks have just became empty weeks, haven't run since 8 April.

If I can get in some 20's/30's the next few weekends with some solid mid week runs I should be okay though... (well that's what I am telling myself at least  )

Just hope the kids don't bring home any more treats for me from creche and prep school

You can do it

  10. Has anyone noticed in the Strava followers feed sometimes you see people's activities as

    Time elevation and distance

    Sometimes time and distance

    Sometimes distance and pace

    Sometimes distance pace and time

Where's up with that? I don't have a setting to decide how I want to see activities or how my activities are presented to others... Do you think it's random and to try persuade people to click through and use the app more?

I noticed the same, think it might also be due to the device the person is using and how it uploads to strava.

Or they want you to click into everyone's run \ cycle

  11. Finishing my course of anti-biotics tomorrow... might do a short little run as I am finally feeling better. Super frustrating few weeks, having serious doubts about Comrades this year, but going to give it a last bash. If I can get in a couple 30's along with a few consistent weeks I should be okay.

April stats... two runs, 89kms, nothing in the last three weeks

    Going in well rested  :whistling:

89kms in two runs is still pretty impressive!!
