  1. I disagree with you there. I ride armed and I would have reacted as follows: the perp came from the right, running across an open piece of veld. Immediately you would have assessed his intention and see that he was angling to get in front to cut you off. at that stage i would have stopped as quickly as possible and dumped the bike (i estimate the distance then to be 10-15m between us) and at the same time backing away, still facing the perp. The perp will focus first on the bike lying down and not on the rider backing away. This will be an oppurtune time to draw and engage. In the footage the perp almost drops the pistol when trying to get a proper grip on it. I would back myself in THIS scenario to be able to stop this. I must add I have practiced drawing from concealed in riding gear and can draw and fire within 2-3 seconds. I do club shoots twice a week at least. Remember each scenario will differ and may require a different action of engagement. my 2c...
  2. Pyga owners some advice please. I currently ride a carbon 29HT which is very race orientated. I ride mostly XCO (not threatening the podium ) and marathons and am looking at stage races from next year. My 29HT is a large and weighs in at 11kg and running a 1x10 set-up. I would like to get a full suspension, probably year end for the above purposes. I do however push hard during these events and enjoy riding on the limit. I have read this thread more than 2x and others web pages on the Pyga. So I am pretty clued up on the specs etc. I am seriously looking at a pyga oneten29. I have the following questions (sorry for the long list but you guys have the knowledge 1. I would need a large frame. (1.84m tall) Would I be able to get the total weight down to 11 - 11.5kg by any chance? I know with high end parts possibly but I am looking at Sram XO at most and possibly american classic wheelset. I will definitely run a 1x10 again with a wolftooth chainring and 42t. 2. Can I run a 110mm fork or will a 120mm be better. Is there a huge difference between 110mm and 120mm? Let me add here that the XCO obstacles are becoming increasing more challenging (steeper and rockier with more drop offs) and I still have a lot to learn in terms of my technical skills. So please keep that in mind. I climb pretty well but am over cautious on the downhills due to the sketchy handling of the HT. It aint made for fast going down rocky descents or it is just me been cautious. 3. How does the Pyga oneten29 climb? any bobbing while standing? Would I need to lock out the shock, or is there a happy setting which minimizes bobbing while climbing and is sufficiently compliant for the downhills? 4. Any suggestions on fork, shock combinations and wheelsets? 5. Is it possible, at a later stage, to have internal routing for a dropper post? i am not a fan of the external dropper post cable and woulfd prefer to go the stealth way. Would it be easy to do and how would it affect the frame warranty? i know that my weight preference will be in jeopardy here. 6. What are your Pyga oneten weights out there? I know there are many 12.5kg plus but are they a heavy 12.5kg or do they ride like a lighter bike? My other option is a Momsen Vipa which I know will be awesome and fast. it is a race orientated bike afterall. But my last question is can I get the Pyga oneten29 to be as fast? Looking forward to your replies.
  3. My last motorbike. sadly sold it due to not having the urge to ride. I lost 5 very close friends in seperate motorbike accidents during 2010. The last one happened in front of me. I took up mountain biking after that. Now I want to get back on a motorbike. This Multistrada I had must be one of the ultimate motorbikes. 1198 superbike engine with heaps of power and torque. used to ride around many superbikes on the corners of Long Tom and the 22.

  5. So the email I got yesterday said three groups- speedy, medium pace and easy does it. I usually start in batch B (MTN marathon series) so would a speedy group be appropriate?
  6. So I see this event is self seeding. What would you base this on? I fear many will start with the fast guys to try and avoid the congestion on the 2 big climbs. May work but not if all do it. Never rode the Monster before so am hoping to come in under 5 hours.
  7. It seems the coke truck driver got pissed off at the bus that cut him off coming up to the circle. As the bus passes him it almost clips his cab. So he gets pissed and tries to cut the bus off in the same way- only problem - circle and red lights ahead. Remember these clever drivers only look as far as the car in front of them when they drive. No forward thinking and anticipation.
  8. Trigon full suspension mtb XO 2x10 weighs in at 10.8kg - cost about R45000.00. For me that is the best value out there at the moment. I think the XX1 goes for R53000 and weighs about 10kg.
  9. A few weeks back there was a thread on someone who can assist with jumps and drop offs. Please can someone help with the guy's particulars who helps with this. I need to fine tune these skills for XCO.
  10. Mine shifts smoothly as from day 1. No issues even when changing on a steep ascent. I have changed 2 things since the initial installation and that is changed from grip shift to clicker and I have a completely enclosed gear cable from clicker to RD. The mud at Sabie played havoc with the grip shift as I could not shift gears as gloves and grip shift was constantly slippery. The clicker has made a huge difference in the shifting at the back. More crisp and instant. Previously I did not have a totally enclosed gear cable and in muddy conditions my cable would become sticky thus affecting rear changes. Since the totally enclosed cable I have riding in pretty muddy conditions with crisp shifting.
  11. That is why on the 1x setup I have a 32T chainring as well. The profile of the race determines what size chainring upfront I will use.
  12. I totally agree with you here. Since moving over to 1x10 (with 42T cassette) I have experienced exactly this. You definitely pace yourself better. I find i finish much stronger and that is where a lot of places are made up.
  13. I ride a carbon HT. For Sabie i ran a 30T Wolftooth upfront and my 11/42 rear cassette. I had no problems going up Mamba (did not stop once) and no problem up Mount moody (only had to get off in the beginning cause the guy in front spun out and had to dismount, leaving no space to get around. Got on again and rode up.) I would struggle if I had a 32/36 set up.
  14. I think you should be ok to race in sub vet category. It is a different discipline to DH. This is not a UCI event.
  15. The idea behind going 1x is not entirely weight saving. Yes it is a bonus but for me the real idea behind it was simplicity, less maintenance and less hassles when riding in muddy wet terrain. The front derailler is cause for many problems like chain suck and snapped chains. Since I converted I have not experienced any of these. The recent Sabie race had many 2x and 3x riders having endless chainsuck issues. i had none whatsoever.
  16. If you want the range then the 42 cog either from OneupComponents or Wolftooth is the way to go. Gives you a 11/42 cassette. I know Evobikes have advertised the 42t from Wolftooth. I run a 30t chainring upfront for very hilly profile races (sabie, barberton etc) and a 32T for the others. so what you will need is a 42T cog (R1295 from Evobikes or source dirctly from US if no stock) and I would start with a 32T narrow wide chainring either raceface or wolftooth. They are sold out quickly so you may need to source from overseas. If your rear derailler is a clutch one then you good to go. probably get away with about R2500 as mentioned earlier. see my pics of my setup. 42T cog from OneUp Components. To add the shifting up and down from the 42T is seamless. I have had no issues thus far and this has been put through the recent Sabie Mudfest marathon and numerous other rides during the recent wet and muddy weather in Gauteng. What i would suggest if you do not have so already is to ensure your gear cable is fully enclosed from shifter to Rd. this makes a huge difference to shifting in general when wet and muddy.
  17. Most definitely. You start with all the riders in your age category. Let the racing snakes go, and just get into a nice rythmn and ride your laps as fast as you can for the whole distance. Great way to improve your technical skills and getting used to riding at high intensity. The great thing is that the course is already marked so you can go and practice on it as much as you want to before the 29th. if this is your first XCO race it will be an experience of note as it is way different to a longer marathon distance race. check out the XCOSA website for an insight into XCO. There will most probably be plenty of contestants training on the course this weekend. Wendell should also be there to assist if need be. I will most probably be there on saturday from about 8am on the course. If you want to join make a turn.
  18. The 30/42 gives me the same ratio as a 26/36. I went for the 30T as I am not the strongest climber and looking at the Sabie profile the downhills were pretty steep and short so not much peddling in top gear required. The flatter sections I managed to keep up with the rest. I am happy with the 30T upfront on the 29er. On a flatter profile I may opt for a 32 upfront.
  19. I rode both the marathon and half marathon with my 29er HT 1x10 with a Wolftooth 30T upfront and a 11/42 cassette. Had absolutely no issues with chain drop, chain suck at all. I did stop frequently at most of the rivers to clean my drivetrain as my cassette and chain was new. So sensibility prevailed instead of grinding it out. I also lubed regularly. The result is that my drivetrain is still new, so no cost there to replace anything. I did however experience problems with my gripshift after my gloves got muddy. No way to change gears as it all was to slippery. When I took my gloves off it was better. Also had some issues with mud causing my gear cable, which is not fully enclosed to get sticky at times. As far as gear ratio goes the 30/42 worked perfectly for all climbs even the steep one at the beginning of Mount Moody which I climbed up, with a bit of effort, but not getting off. Will probably get a 10 speed trigger shifter for those rainy, muddy races. Came in in 06:11. Moving time according to GPs was 04:56.
  20. Running 1x10 with 30 upfront and 11/42 cassette. Muddy conditions, so lots of spinning. Just going past Middleburg. Lots of dark clouds and thunder/ lightning. Looking further east - very very dark.
  21. In a muddy race like this one the benefits of 1x will come to the fore. No chain suck and no gunked up FD.

Tim are you guys going to put a contingency in place to prevent riders from taking a short cut at the top of Mamba climb where the route climbs up just above the return route of that loop where the WP was last year. I am sure you know where it is. Last year plenty riders came through that forest section between that point and the water point cutting out a huge chunk of the route.
  23. I ride that road daily either by car or mtb. Never have I seen runners running on the road surface into oncoming traffic. The runners are always on the pavement. Actually they were pretty stupid as that road verge is so torn up by the rains recently they could easily have twisted an ankle, ( or get ridden over by a mtber). There is a by law that says pedestrians are not allowed on the road surface. We used it in the old days when I was with SAPS to get rid of these hawkers at the traffic lights. Just saying...
  24. DVader was it you that jogger was chasing this morning up 12th avenue? If it was it was f@$&ing funny watching this dude do the 100m dash uphill running after you... Hahahaha. The girl running with him was even less impressed.... I just saw the running after you part and not what happened before. If they did not give way then to me they were in the wrong. The road is narrow there and you cannot swerve out to go around without taking the risk of landing up in front of a car, and they do go pretty quickl up that hill.
  25. The 42T is not for XCO but for marathons like Barberton, Sabie etc. I am not the smallest of guys so it is nice to have that 42 as a reserve. Sometimes I run a 30 or 32 Wolftooth on the front depending on the race profile. The 30/42 gives me just a bit easier ratio than a 26/36 which is what I had on my 2x10 before going 1x10.
